After a solid performance under the guiding hands of Soderbergh, it’s no surprise that former MMA fighter Gina Carano’s star is on the rise in Hollywood. She’s got a big role upcoming in Fast & Furious 6 and her name is also being brought up in a slew of other high profile projects. Chief among them is this estrogen-fuelled riff on The Expendables which, as Variety reports, Carano is now attached to star.
The burgeoning star certainly had a fine debut with Haywire, a film I loved, but it’ll be interesting to see what the exceedingly beautiful talent can accomplish with other non-Soderbergh directors. This new film is being produced by Adi Shankar’s 1984 Private Defense Contractors banner, which has released some phenomenal work this year with The Grey, DREDD 3D, and Killing Them Softly – so there’s every reason to hope this film will kick some ass as well.
Still, The Expendables worked because its roots were so steeped in the nostalgia of high-octane 80s action. This film won’t have that pedigree as there aren’t many female action stars of old that can carry a picture like Stallone.
Except, of course, Cynthia Rothrock:
