Jodie
Foster has made a pretty good career of being the quintessential everywoman -that-you-reeeeaallly-don’t -wanna-fuck-with,
and despite many other notable actresses dipping their toes in the waters, she’s
still probably the queen of that sort of role, both in terms of credibility and
bankability. If you so much as harm a hair on the head of her daughter,
boyfriend, family, dog, or barista at Starbucks, you can expect your character
to enjoy a severe (and usually fatal) comeuppance.
Thus,
it’s not much of a surprise to see her at it again in the trailer for her
latest, The Brave One. The story is simple enough: She’s an average
lady enjoying a great life with her doctor paramour (Naveen Andrews) when one
fateful evening sees them taking a brisk walk down the wrong path. They’re
brutally attacked, and he dies. She wakes up much later, her life as she knew
it shattered. The police are uncaring and bureaucratic. The criminals are
running free. What are you going to do? Time for Jodie to take matters into her
own hands and get some payback. Along the way, she crosses path with a compassionate
cop (Terence Howard) who opposes any sort of vigilantism. Showdowns ensue.
It’s
a pretty standard trailer for a pretty standard-looking film, and having Neil
Jordan at the helm just doesn’t assure me the way it used to, so I’m lukewarm on this. Check out the
trailer for yourself right here. The
Brave One hits theaters Sept. 14.
