Default The CHUD Show/Podcast Discussion

Howdy. The first CHUD Show is in the can, coming in at 55 minutes of insanity. Micah will be setting up the Podcast side of things so newbies can discover the site and show and so folks can pop it in their media players but it doesn't end there.

The finished and packaged show is ready for purchase off of Cafepress right now in a gorgeous CD right here and it's really spiffy and the first of what I hope to be many monthly releases of this sort.

I really think this is funny stuff, definitely rated R, but wholly representative of what I'd do if not restricted by the laws of public radio. The production value is solid considering it's done here and we cover a wide array of topics and answer a few of the questions posted by the readers.

What I need now are a handful of people to listen to this 55 minute MP3 privately and offer forth their "review" of it for potential usage on the site in promoting it. The rest of you folks will have access soon enough or if you trust our skills enough to plop $10 down just grab the Cafepress CD (with full cover liner).

I think this might be a nice addition to the world of CHUD, but that really depends on you guys. Just PM me if you want to be one of the beta listeners.

Thanks! Artwork and stuff can be seen at the link above.

I listened to the sample and liked what I heard.

I'd be willing to listen to the whole first show and offer a review.

If this becomes a regular thing, I'll definitely be tuning in via iTunes.

My ears need this, and they need this swiftly. I'll offer my thoughts, as well.

Back with thoughts:

It is almost exactly as I thought it would be: interesting, funny as hell, slightly informative and I loved the dick out of it. That bit at the beginning with the terrible puns of Podcast had my gut busting. There is laugh out loud stuff buried all over this thing, under zombie carcasses, under Kim Coates, and in the wadded up, used tissue of ghosts. When these aren't the topics at hand, we're getting solid and interesting conversation about all the things that I could ever care to know about.

But for Nick, and this is where I suggest changes to make it a bit more accessible to the masses, it might benifit from being shorter. I loved all the bits, but if there is only going to be one a month, I would much prefer it chopped up and put out weekly. I think it would be really cool in 15 minute bits, perhaps part 1 being a talk about current happenings going on in movie-land, talk about an upcoming movie, or something similar. Like the chat about Stealth. Mention some of the more interesting things going on right now, perhaps. Part 2 could be something more along the lines of the talk about Linklater vs. Soderbergh vs. Aronofsky. These, at least I think, would make the thing more accessible to people not familiar with CHUD.

For the regulars though, this is great stuff. Great, big, giant crab quality stuff.

If this show offers nothing else, I can at least finally end the discussion w/ my friend about how you pronounce Nick's last name. I'd love to review it, but if that isn't going to happen, I'll get it the min. it becomes available on iTunes.

Critical review:

A nice mix of randomness and directed conversation. Very funny (my particular favorite is the 'what if they started making giant animal films again' part). Everything was at least amusing or interesting, and that which I didn't personally find entirely hilarious was stuff that I can easily see most of the others on this board finding much funnier than I do. Interesting topics, and it's great to have the mail-bag sort of thing to provide listener interaction. Good production values.

(Hopefully) constructive criticisms:
- Length wasn't bad as it could be subdivided by the musical interludes (that is, they provided a convenient place to pause), and each section stood well on its own, so you don't have to listen to the whole thing at once. It is a bit long for one sitting, but I listened in the car, and it made a few twenty-minute drives much more fun.
- The spontaneous feel was great. However, y'all talked over each other a little in the first half of the show - not a lot, but just enough to make the conversation a little disjointed (e.g. was it Steve? who never got to finish his "Sean Bean dies in all his roles" sentence).
- For those of us who don't already know your voices, it was hard to follow who said what (that is, I could associate a voice with the comment but by halfway through the show, I lost track of which voice went with which name). A small increase in personal identification would be nice (as in, 'what do you think [insert name here]' 'well [name], I think...'); just calling each other by name once each section would be nice, IMHO.

Looking forward to the next one!

Just got finished listening. Good stuff, everyone seemed very natural. I liked the STealth talk and jokes. I also enjoyed some of the obscure movie references such as the Ghost Story one. I can't wait for the next one. It really sounds like you guys are having a lot of fun while doing this. I hope you guys keep doing this. I don't think I would change anything about this. I really liked the Obscure movie part at the end. I would actually like it to be a little bit longer, but that may just be me. I think it is fine for the masses, I know some people that I could get to listen to it. It would be funny to be walking down the street some day and hear somebody mention Andrew Divoff or Kim Coates. I always wondered what that dudes name was. Any ways great stuff, everyone here will like it and I think the masses may like it as well. Keep it up guys.

I didn't want to start a thread on this but wanted to know:

In the "Shout at the Devil" section on the front page there's a mention that another site tends to rip off CHUD. Which site is that?

Here is my review as submitted to Nick via PM:

Quote:
It was an enjoyable listen and it certainly hearkens back to the CHUD Radio bits. I thought the opening riff on Random Hearts was enjoyable, especially Steve's comment comparing reading the synopsis of the film to reading the Necronomicon. Bad stuff happens!

Other highlights that I enjoyed was the discussion about ghosts and also the extended discussion of the films of Stephen Sommers, Richard Linklater, Steven Soderbergh and Robert Rodriguez. I think once y'all have more questions, the discussion could certainly stay a little more focused.

As always, Waddell's completely random comments throughout your discussions caught me off-guard several times and brought some good laughs.

Finally, your chastising of Steve for naming Ronin as his obscure film was hilarious.

Like the CHUD Radio bits, I think it would be cool to welcome calls from Chewers similar to the one where you talked with Harry Knowles and Tony Ryan.

The only stuff that I didn't enjoy was the sound effects and the music in between discussions.

http://www.chud.com/demo/CHUDSHOW/CHUDshowitunesRSS.xml

iTunes doesn't have it listed yet (when they do, it'll be under "Movies & Televison" as "The CHUD Show. So make sure you browse down to the letter "T" instead of "C"), but I think this feed works for any podcatching program. Just paste the URL above into your "Feed" field like you do any other Podcast.

The size of the file reported by your podcatching software will be too short. I forgot to update it, so it'll say something like 8.3 MB, even though the file is 50MB. But it seems to work fine for me. I just downloaded it, and the feed is rock solid. Nick's on his way to San Diego, but he says they may be able to crank one out there.

The important thing is that everyone (except for iTunes users...for the moment) can start subscribing RIGHT NOW.

I notice that the size seemed a little small. Quality is great, though.

I thought there was a way to subscribe using iTunes (the program) in case it's not on the iTMS. Anyways, by the time I manage to get on my home PC tonight or this weekend, I should be able to subscribe via the online listing.

Thanks for putting in the technical legwork, Micah.

Well it's up in Itunes now.

Everyone try to subscribe through Itunes to get CHUD into the top 10.

To subscribe to a feed not listed in Itunes go to advanced and then choose Subscribe to podcast and enter the URL of the feed.

I don't see it in the listings under "Movies & Television" yet, but it does show up if you search for "CHUD" in the "Search all Podcasts" field.

That was a good listen. I could definitely go for weekly episodes of about 15 minutes each.

Nick's voice is much higher than I was expecting. Not sure if I was expecting a Vin Diesal voice or what. He's our Bill Braskey, I tell you!!

For iTunes Podcasts I think you need to add iTune tags to the RSS feed for it to register in the categories... i.e.
Code:
<itunes:category>Movies</itunes:category>
here's an interesting article:

Thanks for the shout-out and for answering my question, guys. This was great, and I can't wait for volume 2.

I'm definitely gonna check this out sometime this weekend. I just need to find some time to sit by the computer and go through this thread again to figure out how to find it through iTunes. A friend of mine uses cafepress for some of his band stuff. Pretty cool. I'll look into that too.

What is the almost-great movie that frustrates you the most, and what would you change to make it the movie it should be?

Are boobs in mainstream movies only there for those too young or invloved with Star Trek to get the real thing?

IMHO, that would be almost every super hero movie made within the last six years, with the exception of Spider-man. Seems like Hollywood execs can't seem to wrap their heads around the fantasy of it. To them it's more about what hot star they can put in there. Unless the director, writer, and producer are all on the same page together and share an undeniable love for the source material and it's history. For example: Story didn't get it for the Fantastic Four. Singer and Rami, on the other hand, knew and respected the history of the characters. This is my biggest fear for X3, with the studio is scrambling to get it out the door - the content is obviously getting scrambled as well.

About the Podcast:
Great job guys. I enjoyed it. The Waterworld bit was funny. Keep it up. My only (helpful?) criticism is that you shorten the audio transitions. It feels like you're playing with the effects menu for no reason. And you might want to create some mini CHUD.com ads to get non-chewers to come to the site. Plus using this thread might be a good idea to see how many people use iTunes to listen in. If a good majority listens, then it might be worthwhile to add some chapter stops and more graphics - you know, just for pizzaz. The more offensive the better. Just a thought.

QUESTION FOR EPISODE 2:

How would you run a movie theatre (other than putting scorpions into the seats (if there were seats))?

I think the mini-CHUD ads are a great idea, but I've already raised the idea of chapter stops/segmenting to Nick, and he was emphatic about this being a whole show. Thanks for listening, tho.
