It'd have to take something special to make me want to replace a DVD with its Blu-ray counterpart.

Yes, home video has indeed become very dull lately. Why? We have not seen all the hidden gems unearthed and new films continue to impress. Why is this now so Goddamn dull? Perhaps it can be traced to the day Anchor Bay stopped being the cult juggernaut it was and Blue Underground and Synapse stopped releasing new titles every months. Lots of cool smaller companies have also shuttered. Criterion continues to release great titles (Walker was a real surprise for me and is well worth a watch. I also cannot wait to take a gander at Wise Blood and The Friends of Eddie Coyle). But the zest seems to have gone out of this of late. What does Mr. Anderson think of this? He has to wade through the dogshit every week for his column. And I appreciate it!

I'm digging blu-ray. Not every film is worth the extra expense (and it certainly depends on how much effort is put into the transfer), but I'd have a hard time going back to DVD when it comes to things like Pixar films and Speed Racer.

A finer things note: (Keep in mind this has little bearing on anything)
I was at one of the nicest hotels in South Beach Miami last weekend. Myself and the bartender started talking whiskeys. A friend of mine had given me a bottle of Crown Royal Reserve for a wedding present and I mentioned that. The bartender goes over and says, is this it? He has a bottle of ultra rare Crown Royal "No 16". I"m like uhhh yeah no its not that. The bartender says, "well have you tried this?" I"m like, I've never even fucking SEEN that. He goes, I've had it 6 months, no ones even drank it. So he cracks it open fills a glass and gives it to me on the house... I look it up today, based on your dewar's 12 note. "Crown Royal Cask No. 16 – This is a very unusual whisky, a blend of 50 different whiskys that are then brought together to age in old cognac casks made from French oak. (The “16″ comes from a stamp put on the casks to indicate their place of origin and authenticity.) " If you can find it, its over 100$ a bottle so I shudder to think how much the drink he gave me would have cost. Bottom line, if you can afford it, this is like drinking sex. Only instead of being done in 30 seconds and falling asleep afterwards, you have a buzz and feel like wearing a smoking jacket.

Wow! This shit is great! I wish I could freeze it, and make ice blocks out of it, and then skate on it! Then, in the spring, melt it down and drink it! |
