Using the Wikipedia list of nu-metal bands:

Coal Chamber, Disturbed, Powerman 5000, Slipknot disagree with you.

They have Chimaira and Stone Sour on there too which I like but Chimaira isn't nu-metal anymore and Stone Sour never really was.

Come Whatever May had its high points (30/30-150, Reborn, Cardiff, Through Glass), and its embarrassing lows. (That means you, Zzyzx Rd.) Completely middle of the road.

Fucking Powerman 5000? I stopped liking all the bands you listed during my high school years, but I will admit that Slipknot and to a lesser extent Disturbed aren’t horrible. But umm, Powerman 5000? Seriously? That band epitomized everything that was wrong with late 90's, early 2000's "metal". Complete shit.

I would agree that Disturbed are no longer nu metal, and would have to be classified under hard rock, but they are still realllyyy cookie cutter. There is so much better stuff out there.

I'm getting a lot of joy out of the Brütal Legend soundtrack. Brocus Helm, 3 inches of Blood and Dimmu Borgir (it's the song from the Hellboy 1 trailer!) have all caught my attention. Even though I had heard of Judas Priest and Mötorhead, their music is better than I really imagined it would be.

Judge for yourself. The album's up on their MySpace.

Pretty good so far.

Oh no, it most definitely sounds like shit. It sounds EXACTLY like Death Magnetic, which shouldn’t come as a surprise as was produced by the guy who mixed DM.

I can't get over how bad the drums sound, thanks alot Greg Fiddelman.

Rob Zombie's left Geffen Records and is now on Roadrunner. Hellbilly Deluxe 2 is pushed back to 2010.

Bummer on the album release date.

I think the album is fine, it's a Slayer album and I've learned to accept they aren't going to do anything new or interesting, as long as it's fast, loud and angry I'm fine. I listened to it on MySpace so the quality wasn't perfect. But if it has that same over-compression/clipping that Death Magnetic had, well that's disappointing, but it is the loudness wars and not much can be done about it.

I don't know why he keeps making albums, he seems to have been getting progressively bored with each album. Hellbilly Deluxe was a solid album though.

Hellbilly Deluxe was his ONLY solid album.

I went to Heathenfest last night, all in all it was a pretty good show. Alestorm was pretty damn good, it's Scottish pirate metal, and the singer plays the keytar, so they won me over pretty fast. Belphegor fucking killed, I was mostly there to see them, and they did not disappoint. I ended up missing the headlining band Eluveitie because me and my buddy ended talking with the bass player for Belphegor (who was a very fucking cool guy) the whole set, but from what I could hear they sounded alright, folk metal really isn't my thing.

Yea, I was just referring to the production, and overall loudness with over compression and clipping like you mentioned, I wasn’t talking about the actual material. The songs themselves are pretty good.

Also, I forgot to mention this, the singer for Belphegor kinda sounded like cookie monster when he was talking between songs. Now I can't help but think of cookie monster as a diabetic Austrian.

So, the A.V. Club did a decades best metal list. It's got some good bands on there like Meshuggah and Opeth, just the wrong albums. Not to mention some bands that aren't even in the metal genre.

How anyone could rate CATCH THIRTY-THREE above NOTHING (2006 remix), OBZEN, or DESTROY, ERASE, IMPROVE baffles me. Even Meshuggah considers CATCH THIRTY-THREE an experimental toss-off.

And I just don't get the love for Converge. It's like they're trying too hard to scare/shock me. Even Dillinger Escape Plan writes songs.

That list sucks because it's obvious they were more interested in picking bands their readers would know rather than actually picking the decade's best ALBUMS. For instance, including the Melvins' "Senile Animal" over Big Business' clearly superior "Here Come The Waterworks". Also, the inclusion of the Sword and Baroness at all.

I don't necessarily have an issue with the "non-metal" bands on the list (most egregiously, I suppose, QotSA and SoaD) because as a guy who came of age in the 90s alternative explosion, just because something isn't quote-unquote "metal" doesn't mean metalheads won't love the shit out of it.

Plus I think any metal fan who hasn't heard Celtic Frost's Monotheist (probably the 4th or 5th time I've mentioned it in this thread) needs to go hear it and then re-shuffle their "best of the decade" list.

It's puzzling to see 'Watershed' on there. It's a really good from Opeth, but it's nowhere near as good as 'Blackwater Park'.

Oh, I knew me and this list were gonna have a problem when Frances The Mute showed up. And it's under the wrong Isis album, even.

On the upside, they did, unlike many, remember White Pony was this decade, and for this, I thank them.

I typically don't give a shit about best of lists but a best of the decade without Watain's Sworn To The Dark, Marduk's Rom: 5:12, or no mention of Wolves in the Throneroom is suspect.

It's the A.V. Club, so it was expected.

Also, White Pony was ass.
