No no Rain Dog, I didn't think you were drunk. In a previous post you said you're really fat these days. So I was suggesting that the cause of the weight gain was downing to many VBs.

I quite like it. Not sure why no-one in Melbourne drinks it. It's not that zero alcohol swill XXXX.

I went back to the beginning of this thread last night. It's been almost a decade since I read the scriptment, but Pandora WAS mostly purple foliage, it wasn't my memory playing tricks on me. I'll be damned. They should have stuck with that.

Well I'm glad they didn't go with purple simply because I'm colorblind. All purple, violet, blue and pink colors look very much the same to me and I bet it would have looked like a mess to me (and 2% of the male population). I kinda like the idea that everything changes at night.

True but that aint saying much. The joke being down here that Queenslanders named their beer "XXXX" because they couldn't spell "BEER".

Nah the base cheap non-boutique beer that gets drunk here in Melbourne is called Carlton Draught.

I remember Carlton. I'm always amused seeing ads in the UK saying "Castlemain: Australians wouldn't give a XXXX for anything else!!"

When most Aussies hate the stuff. Same with Fosters, although that's better than XXXX.

Anyway, back to Avatar. I don't really like the designs of the Navi. But the environments look fantastic. I'm looking forward to entering this world.

The South Park episode Dances with Smurfs ragged on AVATAR a little bit.

I'm starting to think Dances with Smurfs would be better than avatar will be.

Just chiming in as a woman - I think Avatar will be able to strike a chord with a young female audience. Everything I've seen in the trailers and TV spots so far seems to confirm that the romance will fulfill all the check-boxes on a girl's wishlist: the hero is strong, brave, and smart; he pursues the girl, seeks her counsel, appreciates her, and is enchanted by her physical allure; and he is willing to sacrifice his whole world and his life for her.

Because of this, it's unlikely to matter much that Sam Worthington is going to spend the bulk of the movie as a CGI blue alien. It may be a little tougher to get the girls into the theater because of this aspect, but once they're there, I think the romance is going to work for them.

I was disappointed that Asylum seemed to be passing on this one.
Then I saw this which made me laugh and also showed me why they were doing John Carter so early: they're doubling up!

I don't think that all women have the same tastes in movies (or men), so it's probably kind of unnecessary to hypothesize and say what some women might like about a portion of a movie.

There was an editorial at another blog recently saying that young women will lover Avatar because (in the writer's opinion) the Na'vi look feminine and young women like feminine men. He compared Avatar to....'Twilight'. If Avatar makes the same $191m that 'Twilight' made, it will be considered, like 'Godzilla' or 'Pearl Harbor', one of the biggest flops of all time. A movie like Avatar, I think, is like Titanic in the sense that it's target demographic is everybody: old, young, male, female, rich, poor, etc.

Having said that....I kind of agree with you. Every single time James Cameron has had romance in his movies, it's worked out great and they've been nearly as popular with women as with men.

Oooh, crazy Dino quotes! I don't really know many, but I've always remembered this one about the production of Hannibal.
Quote:
"Jodie Foster needed Hannibal more than we needed her. She came up with this picture, Anna and the King. It was a loser at the box office because there was no sex appeal there. As an audience, I see Julianne Moore and, 'Oh, I want to go in bed with her.' I see Jodie Foster, 'No way.'"
Hahahah.

I saw a 4 minute clip on my XBox yesterday (now it's gone!?!?!) and man that lowered my thoughts about Worthington's character (and it's arc) in this movie. I always thought he'd be this sad and depressed but mellow guy who'd lost pretty much any hope of a decent future, but who finds a sense of inner calm and eventually love on Pandora.

Instead we see a pretty fucking annoying smartass in that clip who yells "that's what I thought bitch" and "punkass" at some creature in the forest. I REALLY hope his behaviour is due to some newfound euphoria over his new body or something, cause my God was that an unappealing main character right there.

I think it is because of the euphoria from the renewed use of his legs. Yea, it was pretty obnoxious. The moment he wakes up in his avatar, he's kiiiind of a dick.

I'm sure that stuff was in the Avatar Day footage Bitches, did you not catch that? Worthington's character is far from sad, depressed and mellow, he's a fairly cliched jock/grunt with all the gung ho and cocky determination that brings.

From the Avatar Day footage and the trailers so far, it seems like wheelchair-bound live-action Jake is pretty subdued till he gets an avatar. Makes sense to me. I'm sure all that calm inner peace stuff will come after he hangs out with those goddamned savages for a while!!!!! (channeling my inner Ribisi)

CHARACTER AAAARC!!!

No I haven't seen the Avatar Day footage so I didn't even realize this. In the trailers he looks anything but gung-ho in attitude in his human form.

I kinda wanted him to be presented as this sad type first so that we'd share his excitement when he gets his new body. But there's a difference from excitement to being brutally obnoxious. Hope I'm wrong, and this behaviour is but a very short part of the story.

I don't recall any live-action footage of Jake where he was obnoxious. As I said, he seems to be the way you want him to be, BL.

Maybe at some point he'll say, "I didn't mean for any of this to happen. I should have stayed in that damned wheelchair," before Neytiri comforts him by saying he has a strong heart so that he can find his inner peace and deliver the Braveheart speech.

Sounds just perfect Chris!

Here is a new featurette on the human hardware. It really does look like a videogame in this quality but a damn fun one nevertheless. Favorite moment: Some guy doing boxing jabs in his mechsuit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RWX1CRl5w0

Edit: better quality http://www.rottentomatoes.com/dor/ob..._hardware.html

There's the scene where he's getting into Sigourney's scanner and he's all playful and cheeky. He's not obnoxious by any stretch, not till he's the Avatar, but he's also not sad and mellow. I felt like even without his legs he was definitely the stereotypical determined and confident marine.

Nothing wrong with a little stereotype here and there is there Nooj?

I don't mean it's a bad thing, I think the movie will probably be shitloads of fun. I just meant to say to Bitches don't go in expecting depth, subtlety or nuance. Enjoying this movie is going to be all about tempering expectations.

What the hell is up with Col. Quaritch telling Jake if he accomplished the mission, he would see to it he got his legs back, his real legs?

Jake's being blackmailed for the ability to walk?

I think they have the technology to fix his legs but it's only for the few and very rich. So Quaritsch will make sure that Jake will get treatment if he succeeds in his mission!
