I checked to see if there was a virus thread here but I couldn't find anything so apologizes if I missed it. Anyway earlier today I was on Darkhorizons on my work computer and I got hit with a monster. I did what I usually do in cases like this and restarted my computer and tried to put it in safe-mode but a blue screen popped up and safe-mode wasn't happening. My usual computer help guy decided not to help out so I asked someone else. What he told me is to re-install my XP discs and it will fix the problem without wiping away all of my work files. I'm going to try it on Monday but does anyone else have any ideas?

Are you able to do any scans, or is it just totally dead? Sorry for the dumb question, it's early.

I can run scans but I'm afraid to let the thing run.

If you've already got a virus I doubt a scanner's going to do any more damage. At the very least you'd hopefully be able to find the culprit and maybe find a program to kill it.

Boris, do you have another PC where you can download some apps? IF so, see the following FREE apps:
Malwarebytes Combofix Spybot S&D HijackThis ANTI_VIRUS- try either AVG Free or Clamwin If you do not have access to another PC, let me know and I can post these files on an FTP server for you to download. I doubt you will be able to retrieve them on your own as the viruses / malware will block the URL. |

I got hit with the Anti-Virus System Pro virus. I had to do a whole PC recovery. The only good thing about that is that all of my songs stay on the computer. It's just annoying to have to download new programs like AIM and the new Windows Media Player. I'm not downloading I.E. 8 again. That fucking sucked. I'm using FireFox.

Google Chrome is even better. Firefox has been really annoying lately but maybe it's just me. It seems to crash regularly.
As for viruses and stuff, I like SUPERantispyware. If you have a nasty (ie: creative) virus that won't let you remove it because it's "in use" disconnect the internet and restart. Work offline and also, if you can actually go online and have the time use Hijackthis. It's complicated but if you have the time to sit there and meticulously go through everything you can find and remove so many unwanted things you've collected over the years. I got a nasty one a few months ago, it took me 2 days to figure out that paragraph.

I use AVG free for anti-virus & Super Antispyware. So would you guys say that I should just try to run my anti-virus and spyware like normal? I know very little about this stuff so one of the things I'm worried about is the virus infecting more and more stuff while I'm running the scans. Does that actually happen?

You can have multiple spyware/malware programs, but you should only have one anti-virus program. I use Eset Nod32 Antivirus and have nothing but good things to say about it.
I would recommend at least two of the following: SUPERAntispyware Spybot Search & Destroy Malwarebytes And one of any anti-virus program you like: AVG Kaspersky Eset Avast The following link is a good list for beginners (stay away from any programs in yellow or red since they are for more advanced users). And the forum there is top notch, so if you have any similar questions they have a lot of information. http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=20 Last edited by Haddonfield13; 11-08-2009 at 10:59 PM. All good good advice. One thing I learned while going through this recently was to rename the executable files of your scans. A lot of these newer viruses know what the .exes of these scanners are called and shut them down right off the bat. Renaming them to whatever.exe or something random will bypass that deterrent. It also wouldn't hurt to get a registry cleanup tool if basic operation is wonky - CTRL+ALT+DEL doesn't work, etc.
I use Glary Registry Repair - it's pretty fucking thorough.

Well folks thanks for the help and advice. I tried to clean it up with AVG and my anti-spyware but nothing worked. Tomorrow I'm sending it off to my friends step-dad. He knows what he's doing when it comes to computers so hopefully it'll come back ok. I backed up my work files(I mean I hope that I did. I really, really hope that I did!!!) earlier today so we'll see what happens.

Just to update those that are interested, the virus couldn't be removed and my computer had to be re-formated. The new problem is my business program. I re-installed it and updated it with my back-ups but it's fucking with me. Damn viruses.

Wait, so you're still infected?

No, the computer is clean but my program is glitchy as hell and the guy/company that designed it is no longer around so I can't get any support for it. Before the virus hit it was a pain in the ass, now it's even worse.
