Default The Man in the Iron Mask (1998)

I don't know what CHUD's consensus on this movie is. On Rotten Tomatoes it scores 30%. But this movie, seen on a boring Sunday afternoon on the CW, really surprised me.

First off, I've never read the novel, so the story and its twists completely surprised me. (Well, I DID know who is under the iron mask, but that's about it.) The villainy is appropriately slimy. The heroes are adequately charming. The emotional beats and humor work.

It stars Leo DiCaprio, Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, Gabriel Byrne, Gerard Depardieu, Peter Sarsgaard, and Hugh Laurie. Almost all of those are some of my personal favorites. I couldn't say any of them give a career-best performance, but if you like these actors, you'll like them in this movie.

Now, it's light on action, so don't expect THE MUSKETEER. And I don't know if it's a 'diamond in the rough', but for coming out of nowhere, it did a damn good job.

Now, Bill's quick capsule review: piece of shit. Thank you. That's all it was, by the way. Don't get caught up in all the phony hysteria over this piece of shit film. "Was it too sexist, or what about –" You're way off base. You've forgotten how to perceive correctly. Take a deep breath, watch it again: "I think it's a piece of shit." Exactly. That's all it ever was, was a piece of shit. Just had to say that and clear it up. All this phony hype around this piece of shit film drove me crazy."

In truth, this should have just been a 4 Musketeers movie. Drop the Iron Mask storyline and give us an adventure with these 4 actors. They're all great in their roles. Irons, in particular, looks like he's having an absolute blast throughout the entire film. Byrne plays D'Artagnon just right, giving him the right degree of inner turmoil over the difficult situation that he's in.

It could have been better, but it isn't a total loss. It definitely needs more action, though.

A favorite moment: at the end, when the guards all purposely miss the musketeers who are approaching them. That moment says alot about the love and respect that that everyone feels towards them.

Yeah, I would have much rather have seen a Musketeers movie with those four actors than a Man in the Iron Mask movie. I love how Malkovich, Depardieu and Irons do nothing to disguise their individual accents, and how the film just glosses over it.

I remember seeing this one in the theater and liking it quite a bit but I was pretty young at the time. I did enjoy the soundtrack too and actually own it.

This is the quintessential "I don't give a crap" performance from Malkovich.

I saw this on a flight to or from Korea, I think. The only thing I remember is the line:

"Magnificent valor!!!"

When I think back to how, as a child, I made my father take me to see this and how we were sitting there in agonised, bored silence throughout, I just laugh and laugh. The wonder years, indeed.

Remember being furious they didn't get Charlie Sheen and the gang to reprise their roles. (Leo vs Chris O'Donnell, yes!) Suppose Oliver Platt can be rather tough to tie down.
