Default Movie poster question

Okay, the poster in the Slammin' Salmon thread set me off. Can one of you in the know types explain why they make movie posters with clearly photoshopped-in heads? Why don't they get the cast together for an actual photo shoot anymore? If it's an action shot, I get that they're going to fake elements of it, but even those are usually clearly not the actor posing. What gives?

I'm gonna go with cost. It's hard to get all the actors together for a photoshoot so they photoshop.

Also, shooting them all as separate elements allows them (those who make the 'tough' choices) to have an infinite amount choices and options for their artists to crank out to BS around on before finally deciding on something lame.

This technique cleary piqued with the poster for the new "Stringer Bell plus a bunch of vegetables" vehicle Takers.

Oh god, it's such a mess of light sources on faces, I can barely look at it.

Slammin' Salmon's poster is indeed one of the worst I've ever seen. There is a LOT of downtime on movie sets(where certain departments are still busy as hell but the actors aren't doing a thing), would it have killed them to have an on-set photographer, or even have a PA snap some shots with a good camera? Then they could have at least gotten some stock heads that at least match with the lighting conditions and such.

What are the qualifications for these jobs? I assume they have a graphic design degree, but there's nothing professional about these images. And yeah, I know, these men and women make LOTS of these before one is decided on. Still doesn't excuse it.

Wait, that Takers thing isn't real, right? That's not funny! Paul Walker's face is too messed up for that to be real. C'moooon

The only thing that would make that poster better(or worse, depending on your POV) would be if Paul Walker had the hands of a black man.

The bigger question for me is why every single mainstream Hollywood poster has to consist of the major stars posing. It's only the indies that can't bank on their stars that go for anything daring nowadays. Heck, the Saw posters are the only ones that have been somewhat out of the box lately. This makes me sad.

Here is a question:

Why did they ruin one of the greatest poster designs ever

with a barrage of fucking floating heads?

Seriously, what the heck? And... Diaz gets to be center head? What gives? If that poster was just the tattered flag, I'd have it on the wall of my room. Instead, it's a poster with Cameron Diaz giving me a come-hither look, not what I want to look at every day

Not only is Diaz the center head, but the names almost NEVER line up with the correct actors above/below. I'm sure it's a contractual "billing" issue, but still peeves me anyway.

I was so distracted by the Zardoz-like heads that I didn't notice that till just now. Thanks for the 'heads up', DARKMITE8
(no pun intended)

I'd just like to verify I saw this thing at the theater last week. It's real. They spent millions on a movie, and couldn't spend a couple hundred to throw together a convincing poster image.

PAs might be among the busiest people on a film set, and get shit on quite a bit, but hey why not?

Granted it wasn't the most well thought-out suggestion, but anything that would result in better heads with which to float.

The thing you don't notice until you see it up close in person is that Christensen's head is lower resolution than the others.

Oh, I've seen it in person. It really is something else. I mean look how HUGE "Walker's" hands are!
