Ah, gotcha. I still don't think so though - and this is coming from a woman's point of view - I never took anything in there as date rapey-ish.

That's because you didn't see the great white shark lurking in the corner.

No, I meant the post-dinner date stumble up the stairs. The scene makes it clear that she's drunk and he isn't (which I suppose can be taken to show that Batman can hold his liquor, or that he's a rapist). And sure, it all turned out okay, but it's still an odd little scene. Either way it does add another dimension of interest to the movie, like Rheokhu said. Particularly Alfred's role at Wayne Manor -- maybe it's my imagination, but he does seem a little self-loathy as he says goodnight!

It's not like she was semi-conscious or anything, so I think we can acquit Batman of date rape charges. Now, Alfred sitting down in the Batcave, cranking one out to bedroom the surveillance footage? That's kind of shady, but he's old and doesn't get much out of the job anymore, so we'll forgive him.

Hang on, isn't that the scene where she wakes in the middle of the night to see this?:

...Bruce was a little too busy being completely fucking insane to bother being rapey as far as I can tell.

...and Vickie hardly looked all that dishevelled when she awoke considering how drunk she was meant to be when they went to bed - so something must have sobered her up amiright??? huh? huh?

You know, for all the strange shit that would come in the Schumacher films, that is still the biggest "What the Christ?" moment in the Batman franchise.

It would be if that wasn't real world exercise equipment, it just happens to suit the character quite well.

I thought his emulating bat behavior in his off hours was a bit goofy. Not to get into "white people make Batman movies like THIS...", but one of the things I really dug in Begins was the totemistic (fake word?) element of him dressing up as the thing that terrified him.

Yeah, it's a lot better than the Zorro thing in the comics, it's also psychologically masochistic, which is interesting. In '89 he only makes a passing reference to bats being "great survivors" as a key to why he chose his identity, it's a nice line and all that, but still really, really thin.

That was a huge thing for me as well. Like Johnny says, it beats the Zorro connection (which always struck me as a fairly obvious surface connection that even the Gotham Press would make) or the hardy creature bit.

When Wayne crawls into the cave under the manor and slowly forces himself to stand amid the thousands of swarming bats, that was cathartic! For him and me!

Which one has the Batwing itself hanging upside down?

P.S. Cheers to Ritter for reviving Old Bruce.

Both the '89 BATMAN and BATMAN FOREVER have the upside down Batwing, I think. Of course, FOREVER also has the Batboat. I like to think that, after having his entire inventory of transportation destroyed in FOREVER, Bruce invested in those hovercraft in BATMAN & ROBIN just so he'd never get caught out again.

I would have enjoyed it more if after a few seconds, he came running out of the cave, screaming like a girl.

That scene needed a single Bruce Wayne tear, Indian-style.
