How long did it take you to watch the whole set? That's a whole lotta Spongebob.

Good review!

Not sure how you avoided a Kevin Bacon joke on that plankton pic. but otherwise great review Mr Butler, brought up a lot of things about the show I always knew were there, but never really gave enough notice to.

Awesome job, sir.

And yes, I resisted it for the longest time, but really, this show is amazing. Just the perfect mix of humor sensibilities.

I had no idea about the Pantera episode, though. If I didn't love this show before...

Spongebob is still the only show I'll go out of my way to watch with my three kids whenever it's on. Love it. My fave episode has to be the one where Spongebob goes to the "wrong side of town" and it's populated with all sorts of fucked up mutant fish. Spongebob tries desperately to take the ext bus out of town, but he keeps missing it my a nanosecond.

I'm guessing that over time I've probably seen all of these episodes with my kids. Like most parents this is one of the few shows my kids like that won't drive me out of the room instantly. Around the house we still say the word "Imagination" while making a pretend rainbow with our hands.

Spot on review. I remember when I was a kid my Mom used to rave about Rocky & Bullwinkle, she said they always put in humor that was there just for the adults. Spongebob just seems like evolution from there.

This may be your magnum opus. Also, I have never seen this show but it looks like it'd be awesome to watch while baked.

Yes. Yes it is.

Also, I would actually recommend renting the movie first. Everything awesome about the cartoon is encapsulated there, and if you're not in love with this series after the bar scene, you're probably dead inside.

I agree. The little sigh of relief in the biker bar that Pat and Spongebob do is worth the entire movie alone.

Wow - thanks guys. I appreciate it. And yeah - the movie is pretty fucking brilliant. The biker bar is great but I've always been partial to the ice cream bender and the "morning after" scene. The way Spongebob slurs "There's Patrick. HEY BUDDY!" kills me. In my research into the show I learned that the movie was actually supposed to be the big farewell and the series finale, but Nickelodeon pushed and petitioned for Hillenburg to keep it on the air. They won, apparently.

And I'll admit I didn't watch every single second of this. A good 90% of the episodes I've already seen - countless times, so what I mainly did was watch every one I hadn't seen, then rewatched a lot of my favorites. And I'll namedrop "Sailor Mouth" again. Goddamn - that shit's amazing. I love the way it just lays out the inherent hypocrisy of the "bad words" rules grownups lay on kids. They censor the bad words not with bleeps, but with dolphin squeaks, which is inspired. When Patrick and Spongebob are playing Eels and Escalators and Spongebob has to keep riding the eel - which is steadily making him more and more pissed off - and when he rolls Eels yet again he just explodes "AW *DOLPHIN SQUEAKS*!!!" So fucking funny. And they reference George Carlin!

Jake - you should definitely check it out. And Corran - I stand by my Hellraiser Plankton grab.

The DVD god(s) must love you. No hardship reviewing this series (and the love shows through in the review).

Gotta agree wholeheartedly with this statement:

Quote:
And in the end, I think that, thematically, is what Spongebob Squarepants is all about: the notion that being an adult doesn’t have to suck. It’s a subtle message but it’s there.

Brilliant review.
I've always liked the show, but its greatness only came to me during the "Pie" episode; the ending to that one NEVER fails to crack me up.

Thanks gentlemen! And yeah - the pie episode is also great. I haven't seen it in a bit but I remember it having a whole film noir kinda thing going on with it, which makes it even more awesome.

And I was browsing Youtube looking for an un-fucked-with version of Sailor Mouth and found this instead. Goddamn.

We're talking about the "exploding pie" episode, right? I dont remember much of Noir vibe there.
The look on Squidward as the pie hits him in the face is what makes the episode for me.

Yeah - isn't there something about a health inspector in there too? It's one of the ones I knew I'd seen plenty of times so didn't take the time to rewatch with this. haha

Nope, thy are two different episodes; The "Pie" one is just Squidward indulging every single one of Spongebob's wishes because he ate a pie that will eventually explode; the "health inspector" one is with Mr Krabbs and Spongebob feedind a health inspector (who they wrongly tought was a scam artis) a nasty burguer and they spend the whole episode trying to hide the body (the inspector had just passed out) from a couple of cops.
I forgot how great that one was....Spongebob using tissues and desinfectant on the "body" was aces.

Also, P.O.O.P; how they got away with that one is amazing.

OH that's right! Yeah the Pie one is great because it's a very rare showcase of Squidward's softer side. And now I'm gonna have to dig up that Health Inspector ep. I forgot how much I really enjoyed that one. Haha - "People Order Our Patties." Good stuff!

Im getting this set next month...you've just reminded me that it must have the "Clam fishing" (the Jaws music effect kills me) and the "Manray" episodes, which are some of my favorites.
Still, nothing beats the "Fry-olympics" episode's wrestling clothes ripping gag.
