The Howling is kind of a silly movie but I did enjoy the hell out of it when I last saw it (about 5 years ago)...in my mind the best thing about it are the transformation scenes which I think are just as good as the ones in American Werewolf.

But this is one movie I'm seriously not that up in arms about getting remade...it's flawed and far from perfect...but it's still a fun movie but far from sacred text.

They can never do more damage to the franchise than HOWLING 7: NEW MOON RISING did. The only one I don't own on DVD. I have some taste, you know.

I read this wrong and got excited about seeing James Rebhorn transform.

Better this than An American Werewolf in London.

I love The Howling, but I can't get outraged over seeing it remade; what really makes it special is the werewolf transformations more than anything else. The worst thing that could happen is that the new film features shitty CGI work and horrible-looking lycanthropes. That's all. Hardly a crime and hardly something that they could do worse at than Underworld.

It's a terrible fucking idea, not because the original Howling is sacrosanct (with sequels shittier than a White Castle's restroom, no way it could be), but because it's so incredibly lazy.

If you want to make a werewolf movie (and I'd like more of them, at least more better ones), take the Dog Soldiers route and tell your own, original story with it. Include as many homages to the Howling that you want, but make it yours.

You'd think with the success of films like District 9, Paranormal Activity, and going back as far as Blair Witch (or hell, going as far back as the original Halloween), more than one person in ten thousand in Hollywood would be on board with original horror films. The endless franchises are just so soul-wearying.

Yeah, but in the case of THE HOWLING, most entries in the franchise have absolutely nothing to do with each other beyond the monster type and title. DOG SOLDIERS could have been titled THE HOWLING 8: DOG SOLDIERS and no one would have blinked an eye (except for the obvious jump up in quality). Part 2 is a direct sequel to one, but features different characters and locales.

Shitty 7 tries to make an attempt at some continuity, but just ends up recycling footage from 4-6, etc.

THE HOWLING flicks are kinda what they attempted to do with HALLOWEEN 3. Different story, same themes/title. They bought the rights to some werewolf scripts/books and just slapped the HOWLING label on them.

HOWLING 4's basically a remake already, or atleast a closer adaptation of the original book (but NOT a better movie by far).

Didn't know this, but I also didn't bother with any of the sequels past the first one. Which, despite Christopher Lee and much boobage, was just awful.

Loved THE HOWLING but am not worked up about this. Who cares. The weird 70's grime and the incredible werewolf designs were what stood out about the film. The transformations don't really hold up any more, but the design of the full beast is still pure evil.

Besides the 1st, 3 is my favorite. So bizarre (werewolf nuns! marsupial werewolves! werewolf ballerina! werewolf baby!) and also tongue-in-cheek like Dante's.

Watch Eddie Quist (Robert Picardo) in the original Howling and try not to think of David Cross as Ronnie Dobbs.

Definitely agree with you on this one. That movie is so batshit it's hard not to like it.

I like The Howling a lot but it is far from sacred ground. If somebody can make a fun remake from it, more power to them. Just don't call it The Howling Reborn. At this point I doubt most people are going to know what The Howling is to care that it is being reborn. Just call it The Howling.

Yeah, having REBORN in the title makes it seem like it's part of the "current" series to me, despite the meaning of the word (a la, ike FRIDAY THE 13th V: THE NEW BEGINNING). Unnecessary.

If this gives us a good* Werewolf film I'm all for it. Sure it could suck but it's not like the franchise has standards. The majority of the Howling films are awful. So if this one sucks it will fit in nicely with the rest of the series.

*At this point I'd settle for decent.
