Default Califonria Governor's Race - 2010!

Think it's too early to start discussing? Well you'd be wrong!

Meg Whitman is already running 2 minute radio ads dozens of times a day (at least on weekends when I listen to the radio). She's plowed $19 million of her own dough into her nascent campaign.

Meanwhile Jerry Brown is expected to run and is beginning to go out and make headlines to bolster his image..Brown has some interesting comments on the position of Governor in CA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Z-kd...om=PL&index=61

Yeah, if she wins I might entertain the idea of moving.

I'm interested in what happens in CA, but we have enough problems in New York (I can expect the IOC and the Republicans to cut Obama's balls off, but David Paterson*? Really?) with our gubernatorial election to be that concerned.

*And it's not like it was an ignoble request -- the guy's approval rating is in the tank, which affects tickets both state and nationwide, and he's getting thoroughly whomped in the polls by both Andrew Cuomo (who I'm hoping reverses his prior "not going to run" stance) for the primary, and by Rudy Giuliani (who will probably be the Republican nominee) for the general.

I'm waiting to hear from the fringe candidates this time. Is Gary Coleman or that porn chick running again this time?

Is Ahnuld term limited? I've always wondered this. Do we expect him to run again?

Or perhaps his career takes a different path and we soon see him sparing with Christian Bale?

Yes, Arnold is term limited, but there's talk he might try to run for Senate in 2010.

I forgot that Gavin Newsom is the other big Democratic candidate at this point. I like that guy a lot, but how's he going to deal with the fact that one of his wife's exs was a convicted yet exonerated felon?*

*Exactly two of you will get that.

Gavin Newsom ftw. Why do we get stuck with *&^%&^# Jerry Brown and Meg Whitman? It's like one step up from Anton Szandor LaVey and Charlie Manson.

I want to know what is Brown running on? At the moment, people act as if he's the nominee by default. It's that air of inveitability that annoys me.

As for the Republican side, the best guy on terms of policy would be Tom Campbell, since he has serious tactics as to how to improve the state finances.

Gavin Newsom ftw.

The conservative radio talk shows out here keep replaying that, "whether you like it or not!" sound bite that was made popular by Supporters of Prop 8.

As much as that phrase didn't help things. It wasn't exactly the cause of Prop 8 passing.

It's not even the Dean Scream.

Newsome seems to be hated by a large number of people in SF where he is Mayor..not a great precedent. He's regarded as a wannabe celebrity who hasn't actually done much. On the other hand, he has experience running a city with the same decentralized power structure as the state, which I think would be helpful.

Of course Jerry Brown has been Governor once before..

Arnold had no idea how intractable the state gov't is.

Jerry Brown was also Mayor of Oakland after he was Gov. So take that into consideration if you will.

Somebody talk Jello into running. You've already elected the Gipper and Conan the Terminator. It's time for a Dead Kennedy.

I shook Jerry Brown's hand when I took a high school field trip to watch the shuttle land at Edwards Air Force Base and was a fan of his back then. Now, seeing the kind of politician he has become--how he's "investigating ACORN" as rampant bank fraud and corrupt backdoor deals continue to deteriorate the state--makes him kind of a villain in my eyes.

Gavin Newsom actually has accomplished a lot in San Francisco in terms of health care and green initiatives. That "whether you like it or not" quote was definitely a bad move in terms of how passionately conservative Californians (and Utah Mormons with fat wallets) hate the gays, but it unfortunately overshadows a lot of really worthy and important efforts.

Mormon's aren't only in Utah! There is a sizable Mormon population in Northern CA.

Brown did a fair job as Mayor of Oakland...actually started some business development projects...but the problems in Oakland are really bad an no one figure could make much headway.

Newsom, when you cut through all the usual BS, dropped out because he ran out of money. The Big Democratic Contributors were giving him the back of their hand because they thought he was unelectable as Governor and I think his "like it or not comment" had a lot to do with that.
It was a dumb thing to say, and pretty much convinced a lot of people that he was clueless when it came to appealling to anybody outside his very Liberal SF constituency. And I think they were right. TO win come next November, you have to appeall to moderates and middle of the roaders, and I don't Think Newsom had a clue as how to do that. I can't see him doing well with Farmers in the Sacramento Valley, but I can see Brown doing that.

People forget (or don't realize) that once you get outside of San Francisco and LA California is a pretty conservative state. Go to Farm Country (the Inland Empire) and places likes Fresno, and you are in Red State territory. It's just that usually, many more people vote in SF and LA. That may be changing with a rabid state GOP motivating their followers to get out and vote.

You're forgetting just how dumbfucked the state Republican party is and how extreme they are. Which they became after the whole prop 187 debacle. There's no way that the party becomes a major force with their "conservative" principles.

And as for Fiorina getting into the senate race? Boxer is not likeable, however she is far better than Fiorina.

And Liberals outside the SF Bay areas tend to be more moderate or less radical (take your pick) then the SF variety. Some of my Democratic friends here in Sacramento who would be definenly considered to be Liberal by most people think that the SF Bay Liberals go over the line from Liberal to Radical.

The State GOP has successfully locked up the state legislature for years. Why do you think we can't pass a budget?

I agree that SF Liberals are a breed apart. I don't know LA that well but I'd guess you have some Out There politics as well. Especially those Hollywood types...

That's due to an arcane 2/3rds budget requirement where a minority no matter how small can hold the budget hostage.
