Is this a bit of satire on the left? If so, brilliant.

Otherwise, I am scared. Did you know that too much oral sex may cause cancer as well? There are hundreds or more people out there who are having too much oral sex; many are unaware that their pleasure may cause cancer, or even submit knowingly to oral sex in a relationship to please a lover who doesn't care about his or her well-being. Not to mention the usefulness of oral sex is pretty subjective; certainly it's not useful in the way an electric car is.

Right, it's the same, because if a guy next door to me gets a blowjob I can get cancer too, correct?

I hate being the ex smoker with an attitude, but even when I smoked (heavily) I never tried to defend my habit. Smoking is a filthy dangerous habit that can seriously hurt yourself, and people who are both willingly and unwillingly next to you. Again, this was something I fully understood and respected when I smoked, which is why I made sure if I was smoking a cigarette and a non-smoker came by, I got the hell away from them (obviously this was unless they were talking to me, in which case I still felt bad for them).

Anyway, the whole reason I was coming into this thread anyway (before being distracted by Mr. "Second Hand smoke is no worse that getting your dick sucked") was to comment that a night like tonight makes me miss smoking. I haven't smoked in three years now, but I used to love sitting out on a cool crisp autumn night and enjoying a cig and and drink.

Hope that doesn't throw anyone back off the wagon.

I wasn't talking about better/worse, I was talking about the "usefulness" of people's endeavors which may cause harm to themselves or others.

The amount of second hand smoke you'll breathe which might amount to cancer is impossible to gauge, also because some people get lung cancer without exposure to any smoke. It just happens. Which isn't to say you can't get cancer from second-hand smoke as well, obviously that is possible.

Any regulation the government would make against smokers, as a kind of "public decency tax" would be arbitrary; and, worse, be easily exploited because the degree of smoke's detrimental effect to others is impossible to prove - all because DaveB cannot accept he lives in a world where the annoying kids on the bus play their music too loudly, and we have to deal with these things Other People do. Some can be cunts, sure. But this is best judged when you speak to the bastard.

This is 100% spot on, and it was what I was going to post when I was done reading the thread. I say this with not one hint of sarcasm or self-pity - take a tour of a cancer hospital. Nothing will make you quit faster, I promise.

I'm a reformed smoker - I never smoked very heavily though. I was up to a pack a day my senior year in college (1987), and gradually tapered off from there. By the time my brother was diagnosed with cancer in 2002, I was down to the occassional cigarette a couple of times a year, so yeah, barely smoking, so it's not like it was hard to quit completely by that time.

Now, my brother was not a smoker - his cancer was just one of those horrible things that life sometimes tosses your way. But my point is - try spending the bulk of a year going back and forth from a cancer center. You will quit, even if you just take one tour of the hospital. Whether the patients there were smokers or not, if you smoke? You'll quit. Even though I was down to a couple of cigs a year at that point, they disgust me now. I can't stand the smell of them, I can't stand the thought of ever trying one again.

Month and a half since I quit.

Outside of when I'm drinking, I don't miss it at all. I certainly don't miss how it made me feel.

Is she kidding?
Mr President, I implore you to keep smoking. Your example is the best thing to happen to the image of smoking in this nation since Sean Connery* first lit up as Bond in the era of Camelot. Do not bow to the pressure. You ate salmon and rice EVERY night of the campaign. In this nation where the average fifth grader is overweight, you are a shining example of fine health. Do not listen to these whiners who want to destroy your calm, and peace of mind. Alexander the Great was not a smoker (He may have tried hash in India). However, if he were, he'd not have stopped in the middle of an Afghan war. That's just craziness!
*

Stay cool and stay smoking, Mr President. I like to think of you out on the south portico, taking a drag and plotting the future of our nation. I wouldn't have it any other way

PS: A fictional smoking President

That's the dumbest rationale I've ever heard.

I'm happy to start a pro-smoking thread if you think that's ok. I do have an agenda here and I don't want to harrass people who are genuinely trying to quit. It's just as of now this is the only smoking related (non cigar smoking) thread on CHUD

Y'know, although I have her on ignore, I happened to hit the board first before logging in - which of course allows you to see her posts.

Yup, she's still an idiot.

Go for it. It would honestly probably be nice for those trying to actually quit to not be hearing a cheerleader for the other side. And mother of god, of all the "other sides" to be on, that has got to be the single dumbest side there is.

Unless you find a group that's encouraging heroin use. And I don't mean toning down the drug war or tolerance or anything, but actually goading people on to use it and feel great about it.

Don't you luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuv Obama, too? Why do you want to see him kill himself?

Even when I was a filthy smoker, I never for one moment deluded myself into thinking it was a great thing to be doing.

Seriously. God, I used to hide it from my family when I smoked - I knew they'd be disappointed in me, and with good reason.

To be quite frank, and very ironic, studying for my med boards drives me crazy with stress, and I do smoke to chill out and help the short term memory. I'm down to like 4-5 a day.

That said, I ran today, and really didn't have the need to smoke. Will it lead to me quiting, I dunno. It is going to help me reduce though. I have set a goal that I will quit when I get the MD, and I will not smoke around women and kids.

FYI I don't even smoke (cigs) normally, just in social situations when I can steal them from friends. I just find the hysteria surrounding smoking to be really grating, seeing as how almost everything else in the American lifestyle is equally bad if not worse for you. And the new tobacco bill makes me incredibly mad. You guys might want to scroll back a few pages, because I laid out my position on this issue at length. I admit it's bad for you, but until I see an unskip-able ad on my next DVD showing bodies laying dead in the streets from eating McDonald's, I'm going to continue to tell people to calm the heck down about smoking.

Oh Princess Kate, you're the best.

On a thread where people are looking for advice and support to help them through the daunting task of quitting smoking. A noble task in that it is to preserve their health, the health of those around them (maybe they had a baby) as well as to save money during these tough economic times.... In this thread you find it totally appropriate to push your "smoking ain't so bad, I'm tired of commercials and whiners" agenda. An agenda that has zero benefit to anyone, let alone the people in this thread.

Its quite obvious you're real agenda is to show that you're "too smart" to buy what you perceive as propaganda and you desperately want everyone to know you're above it and they can't see it for what it is. ie: "I'm Princess Kate, look how much smarter I am! Look here!"

You're a piece of shit.

I fucking HATE all those Truth ads as much as the next guy, and I haven't smoked for about 6-7 years. Doesn't mean I want people to honor smoking cigarettes just because people ALSO can't seem to fucking eat right (myself included).

Shit, if you must take up smoking something, pick up a bud now and again. At least that gets you stoned to the bejeezus belt. Cigarettes just keep you from wanting another fucking cigarette.

Yeah, maybe. My dad died of lung cancer when I was 19 and I didn't stop smoking tobacco until I was 32 or 33. I still enjoy a good cigar once in a while too.

Listen, if people want to quit for any of the reasons you listed, I'm all for that and I'm glad to offer them my moral support. Please also scroll back a few pages to see my views on smoking explained in detail.

If the parent in question though is running two wars and the nation, I'd rather they not quit. That's all my post today was about. You're right though, there should be a seperate "Politics of Smoking" or "Smoking Chewers" thread for these issues, because I don't want to give anyone who is trying to quit a hard time. I wanted to discuss this issue, and assumed this thread was the best place for it. However, I'll start a seperate smoking thread tomorrow.

PS: Cigs with ANYTHING other than 100% tobacco (execpt all natural flavors, and cloves, ETC) should be illegal. If you're smoking Camel/Marlboro, for god sakes quit and switch to American Spirit. I'm not pro-poison, just pro-smoking rights

JoEYPants,it sounds like we're on the same page here. You might be interested to read my views on this topic which I wrote about at length a few pages back.

Oh, and I do. Believe me, I do. That's why I feel like smoking cigs gets a bad rap. If people are ok with bud, then they should back off the tobacco smokers. As a pot smoker, I feel like cigarette smokers are my unfairly picked on little siblings, and I want to stand up for them

I'm still at 4 a day. It totally goes to shit if I'm drinking though.

I may need to lock myself away from social situations altogether.

I wanted to discuss this issue, and assumed this thread was the best place for it. However, I'll start a seperate smoking thread tomorrow.

The fact that you didn't recognize what you were doing was in fact "shitty" is my point. You're self absorbed.

"Research by US and German government health agencies has found significant levels of toxic chemicals even in pure additive-free tobacco and its smoke."

It really only takes a few minutes to google shit and read about it you know. But I'm sure that's not really "poison" to you... just propaganda or something.

I have to admit I'm in the same situation you are. Today was my first day I didn't smoke 1 cig for the first time in almost half year. I'll try running tomorrow, and it'll help for the other half of the day, but the other part of the day I'm not as efficient and I need to probably need something else to replace the stress.

Sad part is I'm also losing weight as well, so I banned myself from cola drinks and stuff. So maybe 5 hour energy's might be an alternative.

Drink iced tea or something, those things aren't good for you at all. No use eliminating one unhealthy habit to pick up another one, right? I don't know what you like to drink but I'm sure there is something better for you out there.

Also, you say you're running and trying to lose weight? Quick tip; sprints burn more calories than long jogs. First run a half a mile to warm up (no stretching). Sprint for 30 seconds, walk 90 seconds and repeat this 8 times... wear yourself out! Stretch afterward.

This will burn up your glucose and force your body to go after your reserves. The next two days your body will be replacing that glucose and this actually means you burn calories off of that work out over 2 days. You burn 9X more calories this way than a long jog and it's better for building muscle. Long distance running actually eats away at muscle.

Google "Sprinting Vs. Jogging" there is a lot of material on the matter. Good luck with everything. It's not easy but you'll feel a lot better.

Yeah, my last 100 m of my jogs I sprint them. When I was doing 5 miles a day (back in high school when i was a good boy) I was able to sprint 200m at the end.

I'm doing my perfect push up and moded crunches. I just want to build up some lasting stamnia, and then I'll hit the weight room after my exam and then I will be jogging in the morning and lifting in the afternoon. Hopefully by then I'll have to quit smoking, and my study time will decrease a good bit. I'll probably switch to the supplements some time in the workouts when I start getting near my old maxes.

I might hit the weight room early, we'll see. I like to keep my workouts pretty organic and changeable on the fly so I don't get bored with them.

"NAILED it."

"Self absorbed" is the perfect description of her. Who cares about anyone else who'd rather not die of cancer, emphysema, etc., or to see anyone they care about die from smoking related illnesses? As long as she gets to spread the "good word" about smoking and then feign innocence when she's called on it, it's all good.

Oh, and I love the way she acts like she's being such a hero about starting a pro-smoking thread. Yeah, we're all looking forward to that like we're looking forward to a painful case of bloody smoker's cough.

Honestly, I never respond to her. This thread warranted the respect and defense though. I don't even smoke, never have. I can still respect the people trying to quit and treat them with decency. I felt like I was defending people more than just some flick when I replied. I found it warranted.

Of course we will see the desperate naysayer talk about how terrible the cinematography is in Citizen Kane tomorrow or something and I'll be back to ignoring her.
