I'll say this much: given what little we see of him here, it's clear that Haley is giving it his all. He could easily fall back on some of the mannerisms he cultivated for WATCHMEN and LITTLE CHILDREN, and from what I can tell his Freddy doesn't really draw from either of those portrayals. He's delivering a unique performance, you gotta admire that.

It doesn't make any difference to me which movies are being recycled, it's not something I'm interested in seeing.

Giving Janitor Kreuger the 'wailing retard' voice of early-period Adam Sandler was a novel touch, but everything else about the trailer is as expected from a Platinum Dunes production. It looks utterly, utterly... competent.

Sounds even worse than we expected:

For the record, I was at the screening but that review is not me. I would have been harsher.

I can't believe it's screening already. I thought they just started filming it.

I figured something was up when WB decided to move its release the week before Iron Man 2.

That "reviewer" kinda sounds like a douchebag, though it could just be denial because I REALLY want this to be good.

I'll say this much, this film could actually benefit from test screenings. They couldn't possibly make it any more inert and dull.

This is what I was thinking. I have trouble taking a review seriously when the guy's pissed off that there wasn't enough nudity. (I could be in denial over wanting this to be good, too, JGB).

It never even occurred to me that there was a lack of nudity, I was too distracted by all the other things that weren't working.

That's because you're obviously smart enough to pay attention to what's important in a movie. I mean, seriously, I can't tell you how fast I mentally checked out of that review when he complained about that. With all the online porn and crap on the internet these days, a glaring lack of titties in a mainstream movie shouldn't even remotely be an issue in a review.

Indeed. And for that matter, the only nudity in the original was the waterbed girl. Obviously not integral to the plot, themes, subtext or their inherent effectiveness. We expect nudity in a Friday film, not Elm Street.

Was there any nudity in the original series? Aside from Bathtub Nancy and the overall gayness of part 2, I recall them being on the chaste side. But I tuned out after 4.

I can't recall with any real specifics, Phil, but yeah, there's always a certain amount of T&A in a slasher film. But what got me was the way he actually bitched about it. Like, "Dude, FOCUS. Actual film review, please."

Not being snarky... but you DID pay attention to what site you were on, yes? That's par for the course. Shit, it's a fucking eagle compared to that Boondock Saints propaganda they put out a week ago.

Um, YEAH!!! Hot nurse (but secretly Freddy in drag) from Dream Warriors. C'mon, now. You're better than that.

Wait, it's screening already? Doesn't it still have about 6 months before it opens?

I remember that! She (and her giant bazoombas) chewed the horny teenage boy's tongue out during a french kiss right before she turned back into Freddy.

Chaste compared to Friday the 13th which was near pathological in their attempts to shoehorn tits into every single film. God bless 'em.

I'm pretty sure 5, 6 and New Nightmare are all nudity-free.

Actually, aside from the nurse in part 3 and the waterbed woman in part 4 (both relating to the same character. I wonder if that's intentional) I don't think there's any nudity in the Elm Street movies. There's some breasts among the souls inside Freddy, but they have latex over them. And there's the whole homosexual subtext in part 2, but I don't know if I'd count that as evidence that there should be nudity in this remake.

In this case, it's just called "text". There is absolutely nothing sub about the homoerotic content of Freddy's Revenge.

F13 has been the only Platinum Dunes remake I've enjoyed without major reservations, so I (foolishly perhaps) hold out hope there is time to improve this movie. I was hoping for creepy and surreal nightmare sequences. I don't know the fiscal structure of the movie, would reshoots be out of the question here? Still a long way until release.

On the other hand, I'll see it anyway, so this is all mental masturbation.

Except for GRINDHOUSE, especially DEATHPROOF. Nudity would have spiced up that boring diner scene. Shoulda been in a locker room.

After what I saw, I would only have any hope for this if you hear about reshoots. I don't see how they possibly could make something interesting out of what was screened, and what was screened was a finished film.

The FRIDAY THE 13TH remake was 1,000 times better than this, BTW. That at least had a kick-ass Jason in Derek Mears. This has a wasted opportunity performance from Jackie Earle Haley.

With all the talk about the homoeroticism in Freddy's Revenge, I'd like to point out that if the gay text was intentional it's a ridiculously homophobic film since it equates budding teenage homosexuality with being possessed by an undead pedophiliac serial killer. Oh, and that can only be cured by forcing yourself into an unwanted heteronormative sexual relationship with your platonic best friend. Lovely, thanks Jack Sholder!

I realize it's sort of become a defining moment in bad 80's horror cinema, but it's always struck me as a fairly nasty and hateful film.

There was an interview with the writer of FREDDY'S REVENGE in Horrorhound a while back where he admitted to the script being an expression of self-loathing towards his homosexuality.

Jack Sholder claims total ignorance of the "subtext" until well after the fact.

It's worth watching again now that you know about the homosexual aspect. Mostly to marvel at how you didn't pick up on it before.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Freddy's Revenge is so laden with homosexual subtext that they turned it into a Broadway musical and it was called Rent.

I just haven't seen it since I was very young. Like 10 or so probably. I'm sure I must've been very confused when I did watch it.

Since nobody's asking, I am going to now re-rank the Nightmare films to include the remake.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
DREAM WARRIORS
FREDDY'S REVENGE
(FREDDY VS. JASON)
DREAM MASTER
NEW NIGHTMARE
DREAM CHILD
A REMAKE ON ELM STREET
FREDDY'S DEAD

I would like to congratulate FREDDY'S DEAD for holding on to the bottom spot. It wasn't easy, but I knew you had it in you!

But does the remake have 3D flying skull-sperms, huh?

You're making me rethink my ranking, Mite.

There's just no need for a remake.

Thing is, while I agree that remaking classics is a futile endeavor, by Seb OB's comments they have completely fucked it up and this is inexcusable. Even if it had been a shot for shot remake with ramped up effects and brutality it would be better than the vapid sludge pile it sounds like we horror fans will get served up to us once more from Platinum Dunes.

They could've really let rip on the dream sequences and at least if the film still sucked it would have one thing going for it... s'like how they remade Friday 13th and came up with something that had perhaps some of the least imaginative kill scenes in the entire franchise; they made it boring. How the fuck do they do it?

I've spent some time thinking about what it is that makes Platinum Dunes's efforts so mediocre. The best I can determine is that where they go wrong is by trying to give the fans what they think we want, which in their minds is a check list of scenes, story beats and iconography. When really what we want is a fresh take on the material delivered by someone with a vision.

I don't fault them for pandering to the teens; that's what horror has always been about and I don't think the characters that populate their films are any worse than they were in the 80's. The problem is there is just so little imagination at play, and this is most evident in the kill scenes. And I'm sad to report that that same lack of imagination extends to the dream sequences in the NOES remake.

But that's the stuff that excites me as a horror fan. Seeing stuff I haven't seen before. New kills. New twists. New settings or cross-genres. Not seeing these icons equip themselves for the first time. Not a checklist.

Unless it's Batman (where does he get those wonderful toys?).

I refuse to believe that this could be worse than the fucking Dream Child.

But isn't that faint praise?

The real ending to Big.

As retarded, wrong-headed and forgettable as DREAM CHILD is, there is at least some imagination in it.
