Default Oscar to be 'Wild and Crazy Guy' at 82

I don't think even the CHUD live blogging could make this worth watching.

Wha? Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin hosting the Oscars not worth watching?

I think that's a great pair of hosts.

With ten nominations in most categories you sure as hell gonna need two presenters anyway since this shit is bound to take a whole day now.

Though they could have chosen way worse. Nothing wrong here.

Martin was aces the two times he hosted. Baldwin makes everything he's in better. Do the math.

Martin was somewhat relevant the two times he hosted. I could be wrong but it just seems an odd choice for such a flagging show to begin with.

Yeah, I think you're the minority in that opinion.

There's only ten nominees for Best Picture. The other categories remain at 5 (or less).

I was hoping for Chris Rock . This should be good though.

Read somewhere yesterday that Robert Downey Jr and Ben Stiller turned it down. Love RDJ but Stiller is horrible.

Between this and Gervasis on the Globes, it could accurately be summed up as 'Hollywood wants a spanking.' Every couple of years they hire a host who's a little on the edgier/mean side (Martin, Chris Rock) to show people they're capable of laughing at themselves and taking hits like everyone.

Martin was solid both times that he hosted. Throw some sour Baldwin into the mix and it could be inspired greatness.

Okay. Though that alone will add another hour at least. Not that this matters in the big schemes of things.

I always thought the Golden Globes went without a host.

Was disappointed when Gervais was hosting them because it meant he wouldn't get the Oscars.

You're joking, right? Steve Martin was probably one of the better hosts the Oscars have ever had (he's done it twice), and pairing him up with Alec Baldwin is a no-brainer.

I think it's great, much better than the possibility of Billy Crystal and his stupid songs again.

Now just get Conan back to hosting the Emmys and we're set.

There's the impression that Gervasis is too mean for an entire show. The Globes is a test run for him, because as Anya has pointed out, that show has traditionally gone without. If he does well, then maybe he gets the Oscars or the Emmys in 2010/2011.

Martin and Baldwin will be terrific together. It could have been much, much worse, people. Only a few years ago, folks were talking Rosie O'Donnell as a host, so count your blessings.

Show's gonna be alright, it's just going to be interesting seeing how they plan on padding it out some like they did last year. I just felt bad for Jackman.

They've dropped the honorary awards from the show and moved them to a separate event. And there's a rule change in Best Original Song that could lead to a cancellation of the category. Though, I hope not, because Hideaway from Where the Wild Things Are needs to be nominated.

Quite necessarily. Come Oscars' time, that flick will have been thankfully long forgotten.

...And hopefully lost in a deep cavern.

Found this:

Quote:
LOS ANGELES--No Academy Award will be presented for best song at next year's ceremony if none of the tunes is considered good enough, Oscar organizers said Friday.

Rules for the 82nd Oscar show next March will require that at least one song must achieve a minimum score of 8.25 on a scale of 6 to 10 in voting by members of the academy's music branch.

"We're trying to improve the quality," said composer Bruce Broughton, who heads the music branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. "There's been a lot of talk about the songs in films, the lack of memorability compared to songs in the past, the almost forgettability of some of them."

Thank fucking god they came to their senses, apparently, and decided to ditch that new direction they tried to go in last year.
