Just finished the The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 update. Not a classic like the original, but servicable Tony Scott.
Travolta's performance fascinates me. A near trainwreck at times; a flamboyant portrait of brilliant instability. It often rings false, but I like to think that was intentional. On deck: The Hill or I Love You, Beth Cooper |

Slap Shot. It has been twenty years or so since I saw it the last time. I'm a bit nervous and not even sure if I should watch it, because it was one of my favorites back then.
Argh, screw it, I bet it still works just fine. |

Huh? No, it was just released as a rental on monday over here (and went on sale as well).
And while it is an entertaining flick it does not live up to the hype in my mind. Last edited by Jan; 11-03-2009 at 04:00 PM. |

i'd assumed you'd had to import it!I'm taking it easy with a late viewing of Van Damme's KICKBOXER which appears to be dubbed. It's also competing with Commando for more homoerotic moments in a film so far. Followed by BDs of KNOWING, NIKITA and CHILDREN OF MEN. I've already seen COM but think it's worth a revisit. |

Just watched the little sleeper The Molly Maguires. Screenplay a little heavy-handed at times, esp. w. the diologue, but oh, man, the performances make up for alot. Final scene between Harris and Connery is excellent.
Richard Harris in his prime blazed. Up next: The Hill or The Offence |

It was a'ight. Cut from the same relentlessly nasty british gangster movie cloth as Villain and Get Carter; Reed and McShane are escaped convicts seeking revenge on Reed's adulterous wife. There's some pretty ridicolous violence towards the end, and some far-fetched plot twists as well, but it works if you like that gritty 70's british crime flick genre (a wonder there aren't more books/fan sites dedicated to this genre, I'd say.) McShane is great, all youthful and slimey, and Reed plays up your compassion like EDward G. Robinson at the top of his game. There is also a very interesting moment where Reed buys a gun and McShane seriously freaks out - "that's not the way we do things here, if you use a gun both the police AND the mob will be after you!"
It was a pretty poor copy though (tivoed off TCM), and I honestly couldn't see shit for most of the prison break.

It's nearly flawless - the twists are shocking, action's perfect beat-for-beat (cable car stuff is genuinely quite tense!). It's comfortably edited and shot - bar some dodgy dated greenscreen work which would have really looked nicer with just some painted backdrops.
Really it all just comes down to Burton, Eastwood and some busty broads. Glorious! Ruining my run here with KNOWING though. I'm compelled to watch it and I don't know why! |

Glad you liked it, Dan. It's easily my favorite WW2 movie, and I picked it as my number 2 selection for the 60s draft. The dining room confrontation (where all is revealed) is one of those rare PERFECT scenes that you want to watch over and over again.

Watching Deliverance for the first time. Interesting to see Ronny Cox in something not directed by Paul Verhoeven or involving Axel Foley.

A masterpiece, no question. What a run Boorman had! I put this up with Psycho, as far as films that would have been so great to see for the first time unspoiled. Burt rocked it! (Love story that unknown Bill McKinney freaked everybody out by staying in character while filming infamous scene. Uncomfortable!) Watching: The Sporting Life |

Hey, I have that at home from the library right now! Anyway, I was going to fire up Patton, but I think I'm going to put that off until tomorrow night. Instead, I think I'm going to check out Adventureland so I can send that back to Netflix and get more Mad Men.

Caught Robert Altman's debut, The Delinquents in the wee hours last night. An interesting curio,to say the least.
Today: Stagecoach + Dodge City + Union Pacific Revisited Fade To Black recently. A lot to love for the movie and horror fan. Central Dennis Christopher performance especially great. Essential Tim Thomerson. Seek it out if you can (or dare!). |

Even Enemy at the Gates tried accents. If you're not going to bother speaking with a German accent, don't hire people that sound so British that even one of their own finds it over the top. |

Just finished The Killers (1946), which is a god damn awesome movie. Lancaster is fantastic, and Ava Gardner is SMOKING hot. Now I'm going to throw in the 1964 version to see how it compares.
