Honestly not my intention. I'll still probably get banned. It is probably for the best.

I like CHUD, because I find that it treats readers who like to keep up with genre films to a level of sophisticated commentary not often found online. I read Aint it Cool News for many years, but found that I no longer enjoyed the writing style of many of the contributors. One of the first posts I connected with was Devin's "Why I Am Not a Fanboy" from a few years ago, a piece that articulated perfectly the dilemma of a "film geek" who also has a degree of personal taste and style independent from whatever "hot property" is being adapted this film season. It was with this piece in mind that I felt compelled to object to the Five Stages, particularly those sections that proposed that "film geeks" viewing (and especially buying) habits are as reliable and inevitable as the tide. Certainly not the case.

I also find it amusing that this article, of all things, got Buster's goat. (And yes, that was a not-so-sly AD reference).

This was one of the more non-inflammatory advocates I've read, and though it addressed "the geek" (which can often incite seething nerd rage), I thought it did so in an obviously fun and loving way. I don't see how anyone could get all up in arms about this one.

Disagreement with anyone here, or a main thesis tends to go over okay. Mostly people aren't going to respond to your points, but it can be done. When said disagreements start with "x is so stupid." and the content of said posts boil down to personal insults - which is 9/10 what happens, it tends to prove the point.

For instance:

"Firefly fans are retarded because they will buy 100 tickets for a movie and give them away."

"You're retarded."

The former may begin with a silly insult, but what is happening is absurd and based on facts, the latter is just an insult, and incriminates the person who is offended by offering neither justification, nor reason for being offended.

As per the piracy debate, this is a movie web site, there are two ways to behave when it comes to piracy here, don't do it, or don't talk about it. Piracy is theft, there's no middle ground, and the problem is that people want to justify it or whatever. If there were somehow a forum for cops only, it wouldn't be smart in that forum to talk about smoking weed, even if you think the laws against are silly or whatever. Either don't do it, or don't incriminate yourself.
