I'd love to some New Line monster make an appearance on the show.

I missed the last half of this season due to work and no DVR, but I can't wait for the DVDs in a couple months.
Ackles is my pick for Captain America.

Ackles strikes me as being a bit too goofy for Captain America. Honestly, at this point I think the best thing for him would be to do some non-genre roles. He has the chops, he's just been typecast.

Ackles really is a better and more charming actor than I want him to be. He drags me kicking and screaming into liking him time and time again. He was pretty un-goofy in My Bloody Valentine, though that also wasn't the best material for him to show his stuff...

ETA: You know, I can see him as Cap, but if they're going the Ultimates route I could see him more as Hank Pym.

Good to see lots of folks getting on board. For those who havent seen the "Eye of the Tiger" lip sync, or a host of other things, enjoy the ride.

If they ever make a live action Final Fantasy VII film, Jensen Ackles should be cast as Cloud.

Devin is a fan of the show?

I am bracing for the nerd backlash to this show now.

I can't wait for the nitpicking to commence in season 5's discussion thread now.

Right, but we all know where Season 4 is headed from the season premiere. The problem is the show has no way to up the stakes. It has no supporting cast members to kill, and it doesn't have the budget to wreak a lot of destruction. I say it was spinning its wheels because it felt like it was refusing to go where we all knew where it was heading for no other reason than it makes for a good season finale.

"... looks like a CW prettyboy version of Buffy"

That's what I always figured the show was, which made me steer clear of ever watching it.

That list actually makes me want to check it out now.

The show is really not that great. It is overly predictable, sucks all the mystery and scare out of whatever mythology it tries to bring, suffers from 1 too many smirking, snarky bad guys, and Jensen Ackles is terrible.

There have been a few cute moments, but I never really miss it when my roommate's gone and it's not watched.

I don't really know if we knew where it was headed. Honestly, I sat watching it with friends, and we were all kinda' thinking/saying, "Yeah...whatever - like they're not gonna' figure this out...like the writers aren't going to come up with some bullshit magic fix..."

It's kinda' when Dean says, "We're probably not gonna' figure this out," (after he commits to letting Sam try for awhile) that you finally say, "Well...I guess they've actually comitted to this."

I think the season plays with the notion of the predictablity of television...of the pat resolution...the way I see it, actually pulling the trigger on the plot point was a surprise - though once it really occurs, you're left thinking (swipin's):

"Gee, I wonder if they're gonna' go all Search for Spock with this shit..."

If anything, your complaint that the season meanders toward an inevitable conclusion is...and I mean no disrespect - I just can't really find the right word, so I'm gonna' go with "superfluous" - when you consider the far more obvious truth that (I'm really enjoying the swipe):

He's not going to stay dead.

Contemplating that, it would really suck if (swipe it, kind sir):

he stays dead for eight episodes or something. We know he's gonna' come back somehow - and more than likely with powers. He might as well just materialize in an open field and get it over with.

To me, what you thought was obvious from the start is nowhere near as obvious as what's to come, since the show has been full-sprinting toward - pitting the brothers against one another (with one good and one evil) - since it started. Whether in the eyes of the father, in their philosopihies, in the way they relate to others - everything points to that end. Which I guess makes the whole thing as predictable as you think it is - just on a more massive level. To make this work - Season Four has to be a great deal more mythological, and I'm guessing it will be.

Is it?

All this love certainly makes visiting Season 2 seem worthy of my time though. But I'd love to hear that Padalecki improves.
Pretty much any scene with him and Ackles is great, like Devin said the chemistry is impeccable.

Intense/Serious-Padalecki isn't always that great, he doesn't have the chops to carry a darker scene the way Ackles does, but throw some comedy material his way and he nails it, particularly "Bad day at black rock" from season 3.

I personally think his best work was in season 3's "Mystery Spot", even though he was playing (a highly effective) straight man to Dean's... Well I can't go into that without spoiling it.

I think the best thing I can say about Padalecki's work is that after a while, when he's not on form, he doesn't get in the way. When he's on form it just helps give the show that little extra boost it wouldn't otherwise have. There are only a handful of moments where I really felt he derailed things, and they were mostly in the awful, awful werewolf episode.

Matt, I'm a complete idiot. I re-read the thread from the beginning (I do that a lot when I'm posting, so I can keep other people's ideas straight) - and I completely mis-read your initial post. I thought you'd meant that Season Three is filled with "Dean Angst" - connected to what you were implying was a certainty regarding the outcome of that season's central story. Now I see you were talking about an issue with Season FOUR...which as I just mentioned, I haven't seen yet (I pick them up on DVD - a friend nabbed S4 from iTunes, maybe I'll watch them that way instead of waiting until September).

I assume the issue is something related to (out of respect for those who just started, it's invisible again): How he came back to life and for what purpose - I still assume it's to fight with his Sam. Am I on the right track?

Man...sorry about the confusion.

A really... really small thing I've enjoyed on this show over the 4 seasons so far is the simple evolution of the title card.

Glad to see more people getting into the show.

He becomes less annoying but I'm pretty sure that's more because the writers realized that Sam is not the right character to be angsty with. If you give him the slow burn like they do with season four, he's really quite good. Padalecki doesn't seem like the kind of actor who is natural at the good guy/sympathetic roles but I think he could have a helluva career playing the bad guy.

Great read Devin!

I've been away from the internet for about a week and one of the first things I see when getting back to CHUD is Devin showing his appreciation for one of my favorite TV shows. What a nice way to come back.

The show was definitely a hard sell, initially at least, and I've rambled before about why I avoided it and when I jumped on board so I'll skip all that again, but it's a testament to the show's underlying quality that general appreciation for it seems to be rising (as far as I perceive anyhow).

I haven't pre-ordered my season 4 set yet, but I'll definitely use the link to do so.

No problem. You're kind of on the right track. I'll inviso-text just-in-case but it's not super-spoilery: Essentially, Dean gets out of Hell and he's suffering from PTSD. Sadly, the writers have absolutely nowhere to take it until the end of the season so while the character is pretty impressive at the beginning of the season (and also gets to have fun even though it's clear he's avoiding his pain), about a third of the way in, he just drags completely.

I do have to disagree with Matt Re: Dean is Season 4. Though I completely see what you're saying, I think it's well played enough to stop it becoming a drag for me. If it was Sam in that situation with his endless moping I'd agree with you though. But I think Ackles plays it well, and the continuous insight into Dean is quite layered. Particulary when you view him from the blood hungry guy he was in Season 2.

To be fair to the new folks though maybe all this spoiler talk should be handled in the Season 4 thread before we all get too spoilerific.

Yes.
I'm 2/3rds into the season and i have the same problem. Every single episode they keep setting up the same things but no resolution. Plus, for every one or two "main Story" episodes we get 3 or 4 fillers. It's pretty ridiculous.

Just want to say thanks to Devin and the other SUPERNATURAL supporters on this thread for convincing me to give the show a second chance. I gave up on it during season 1. Now I've skipped ahead to season 2 and am loving it.
