If we don't get a HUGE behind the scenes documentary with the Bluray release of the film i will be very dissappointed. I'm almost more interested in finding out all bout Jaa going nuts and walking into the jungle.

Given how uneven Thai cinema tends to be, Tom Yum Goong whilst being a film I love dearly is pretty fucking terrible as an actual piece of cinema, I was amazed at how good Ong Bak 2 looks. I caught a screening of it a few weeks back and if you're going in for all out action you're going to be dissappointed. It's long and focused and it plays more like a Terence Malick adaptation of the 36th Shaolin Chamber than anything else.

No US release date for this yet, eh? The previous trailer gave me that rush that I used to get 10-15 years ago for martial arts cinema. I absolutely have to see this.

The movie of course is a mess, but it's surprisingly well shot.
Ong Bak and The Protector are better action movies. And if I remember correctly, that isn't Jaa fighting a croc. The best bits of Action in the film involve elephants.

The best fight in the film is definitely Jaa's vaguely drunken brawl against the slaver. The last half hour actually got to the point where it was draining rather than exciting. So much fighting, so little energy/

![]() He looked like his favorite elephant died. Still I'm really tempted to see this, only if my blu-ray comes in an ivory case.

this is a special movie. an instant classic.
dont listen to the haters. Tony Jaa, Pinkaew, and whoever else ended up having a hand in this film really knocked it outta the park. The story is not nearly as nonsensical as Tom Yum Goong. Its beautifully shot. But most importantly, the action is BALLS TO THE WALL BATSHIT INSANE. Elephant-Fu...you'll get it when you see the movie. The last 30 minutes was some of the finest action choreography I have ever seen. Im talking Golden Harvest 1980s Sammo Hung directed action. Im not surprised Tony Jaa went crazy making this film because it is complete insanity... The only flaw is the obvious setup for a sequel which really causes the movie to end real awkwardly.

Bobby Bear, I played the video. Twitch's videos play despite that warning sometimes.
Does anyone know when this will be released in the...USA? Last edited by duke fleed; 07-03-2009 at 05:32 PM. |

According to Kung Fu Cinema's Mark Pollard, Magnolia is sending it straight to pay-per-view September 25, with a bullshit limited theatrical release October 23.

Reggie-Wanker, Straight to...Pay Per View? There go Ong Bak 2's...Oscar chances. Didn't the original make a decent enough amount of money to just release the film in theaters first? I will definitely watch this on PPV, instead of waiting...assuming the rumor is true.

Reggie-Wanker, That is too bad, as I would prefer to see it in the theater. It really should have had a summer release date. Outside of the...Watchmen Directors Cut and...G.I. Joe Rise Of Cobra, the only other film that looks any good is...Gamer. I wonder if...Ninja Assassin and Robert E. Howard's Solomon Kane will also take the ppv route.

Bobby Bear, Cheers to you as well. Normally I would be going to see the Fireworks on the 4th, but for the last 4 out of 5 years, a true menace known as...Piping Plovers have laid their eggs in the beach in East Hampton, NY, and also it is a federal crime to disturb these horrible things during their mating season. Each bird is less than 1 ft high, and yet they need whole sections of beach roped off. People have enjoyed fireworks in East Hampton for decades, and it is a shame to see the celebrations stopped by these...Fowl things. A local writer...Jerry Della Famina, a former ad exec occasionally includes a recipe for these things, as a joke to annoy the friends of the piping plover wherever they be.

As for the last 30 minutes being draining, I completely disagree. The way Jaa transitions from weapon to weapon, and moves from one opponent to multiple was amazing. There is far less of the "ong bak syndrome" (stuntmen bracing themselves for an incoming blow). The hand and footwork Jaa showcases was amazingly intricate. The weapon stuff is freaking phenomenal also. It kept building and building till it hit ultimate insanity when the elephant got involved! Never did I feel there was a lack of energy. One area that Jaa and Pinkaew definitely are not as good as Sammo and Company is in the one on one fights. The whole fight with the "raven" character (Dan CHupong from Born to FIght) really felt added on and definitely left me feeling flat. I think that may have been more a function of the behind the scenes drama and changing of directors. As far as one on one stuff, probably the scene in the temple where Tony faces the capoeira, kung fu swordsman, and the MMA guy is probably the tops that this Thai crew has done. But as a whole, I think Ong Bak 2 put this crew into legendary status.

I'm surprise it still hasn't been released in some countries. I rented this 3 months ago, IIRC.
This is an actual movie, unlike Tom Yun Gong and Ong-Bak 1. There's actual progression, an actual storyline. That being said, it's not a very good movie. The photography is mind-blowing gorgeous, one of the best in martial arts movies. The action, though, while filled of amazing moments, doesn't gel together like Ong-Bak. Not even close. Hell, TYG has better action. If you've seen Born to Fight, you'll know what to expect. It's basically "ok, what's next? Grappling! Check. what's next?". It's worth a rental for the coreography with the elephant, though. I have no idea how they did that. Oh, and the one fighting the crocodile is a kid, not Jaa.

Which cut of Ong-Bak 1 did you see? The U.S. cut removes a large chunk from the middle of the movie which helps the pacing immensely, but makes the story not make sense. Not to say that the Thai version is Shakespeare or anything, but the progression was there.

The American edit of ong bak does move a lot better, but becomes even more nonsensical than the Thai version by cutting out the portion involving the hooker with a heart of gold.
