Well, there's no wig on Willis so that's a +1 for the movie. Tracy Morgan is a also a definite plus. But Jason Lee's defeated visage I'm sure will manage to bum me out.

Three lady voices listed without names on the Squeakquel IMDB page?
Dare I dream?

I think this is a pivotal film for Kevin Smith. In his own little insular world he created with the Weinsteins, he was able to indulge some very bad ideas, and he hasn't grown creatively since Chasing Amy.
Many would argue that his strong suit is writing or editing, not directing, and while I'd certainly agree he's not the best man behind the camera, Zack & Miri definitely showed me that the guy is just treading water and rehashing the same schtick he first showed off in Clerks. The man has literally remade the same film no fewer than three times; I think the pinnacle of the "slacker grows up, finds love and purpose" has been reached, at least from his pen. It'll be interesting to see him forced out of his comfort zone, and likely discern if the promise exhibited in the mid-Nineties was based on anything. Otherwise, he's the next George Lucas, just on a much smaller scale. |

I'm very curious to see a trailer for this.

Does anyone see this being directed with any more skill or competence than a made-for-tv flick?
What directorial skill has he ever displayed to suggest he can bring anything more than that to a film he hasn't written?

I find it funny that he makes all of these "growing up" films when he hasn't done any of it himself. The cast for this one is great but I don't hold out much hope for Smith's development as a director. Although I do expect him to insult everyone who posts negative stuff about him from the comfort of his own website.

On Sirius/XM's Opie & Anthony this morning, Jim Norton (delightfully vulgar standup comic & un-named 3rd mic on the O&A show) talked about going to shoot a small scene for the movie over the weekend. He didn't go into detail about who he's playing, but the scene involved him being held down on a chair in a tattoo shop with Bruce Willis holding a tattoo gun within an inch of his eye. Thought that was a promising sounding tidbit.

He's directing other people's work? Shouldn't it be the other way around?

I would say casting Jason Lee put Kevin back into his comfort zone.

Well, Jason Lee is a funny guy, and consistently the best thing in Smith's movies. So I don't see the problem.
I'm really rooting for Smith to pull this off. Hope Willis can channel his inner-Nolte! |

I'm looking forward to this for no other reason than hoping that Kevin Smith will get out of his typical headspace and find some inspiration in someone's else's words. This will either confirm that his potential as a writer/director is severely limited or it will jumpstart his creativity. He's got some good pieces to work with.

I would say that I'm only excited for this because of how funny I find Tracy Morgan, but I also find Will Ferrel extremely funny but Kevin Smith somehow managed to make him un-funny in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
So fuck this movie. |

The part is barely a cameo and more of a straight role.

Let me just say, without airing a lot of private shit on multiple people's parts and in complete conjecture, a lot of the reason I think Kevin Smith hasn't grown too much creatively since Chasing Amy is because of his lifestyle. I'd love to elaborate, but I won't out of respect and prudence, so I can only really leave it at that. His career post-"Amy" is a direct reflection of how his life has played out and how those in his inner circle react to him and act upon him. And honestly, that's probably not all that uncommon in the world of major Hollywood productions, but it's the only one I've ever had insight into. |

Bobby: I haven't heard them but if he has moved passed than then good for him.
Atomic Ross: I'm sure it is true of a lot of Hollywood types. I think George Lucas would benifit from someone saying no to him once in a while for example. All I can say is that if you do know him then prehaps you should be "that person" who calls him out on some stuff. Editied to add: I'm sure he will thank you in the long run.

I don't think anyone ever takes constructive criticizim well. The only difference is that most people will go away, calmn down and admit the other person was right.
Sounds like you have an interesting tale to tell Ross.

I really wish I could dole my version of it out. I think people would generally be a lot kinder to Kevin, critically, if they ever stuck around that circle for a while.
To make a very vague and not-totally-appropriate analogy, Smith's career and life post-Amy is equal parts Shakespeare and George Lucas. And you know what? The guy is making the films he wants to make. They may not be great, or even all that fresh to even his own previous work, but he's living his dream as it is now. Not many of us can say that. I haven't talked with him or his circle in about a year, but I get a few snippets here and there. It sounds like post-Zack & Miri, he took a good long look at his own stock and made some serious career decisions. I'm guessing the DICKS job is the result of that, as I know for a fact that movie was nowhere on his radar before Z&M, and he already had two or three other projects he was writing lined up which are now on the back burner. |

He's living his dream, but his dream is so fucking boring. And I don't charge anyone ten bucks per dream. I win!
But damn it, I'm a little curious to see Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan onscreen together. Atomic Ross's cryptic nonecdote = yes men and too much weed. |
