We've had this discussion over at the movie's post-release thread. The way Lucas is antagonising his audience (or suffering from an epic meltdown) is hilarious.

And C3PO is definitely gay. I don't know why but I always thought of R2 not only as straight but as a playa. Maybe it's because -unlike 3PO- he's privy to the saga's secrets and schemes and actively participates in them.

Artoo is definitely a straight-shooter. Just look at any Shabby Blue fanfic/fanart where he is depicted dutifully servicing Padme and Leia time and time again. Threepio keeps hoping to bring Artoo over to the other team but it ain't happening. And it probably freaks "goldenrod" out that Artoo continues to engage in unprotected interfaces with strange computers. Artoo's the original pimpbot.

Am I the only one who thinks Devin is being rather homophobic on this one?

I mean, no one is saying this Hutt us gay, George himself wanted him to sound like Capote NOT just a gay guy. Many strait people talk like Capote and many gay people talk like Clint Eastwood.

I think this is just over reaching and I don't think Lucas derserves some extra scorn for this

Not all, but the way a person talks does not immediately denote sexual orientation, and anyone who makes a judgment based solely on how they talk is being no different then people making assumptions based on the color of some one's skin.

I agree. Its just a stereotype. Most of the gay people I've met don't talk in high pitched lisps, but some of them do, even moreso when their around each other, or not in a work environment.

You can't say gays don't accept the stereotype though.

If you're gonna have a Hutt speak English he should sound like a scattin' old school jazz man, not Mike Tyson. Devin, which alien characters are ripping on Jews. I've definitely seen the black, Japanese (Nemoidians seem more like Japanese Terror than Chinese Terror), Mexican/Greek (Watto), and Middle Easterners (the Sand People!), but I haven't caught a Jewish stereotype yet.

No many gay people even embrace it. The point I am trying to make is that Lucas asked that the character sound like an individual not an entire type of people.

Then some one like Devin comes along, who loves to light a fire under people, with a Homo the Hutt article just to get people going,

I am not a huge Lucas fan, but Devin usually tries harder to hide his riot inciting tripe, and I thought BS needed to be called.

Lucas asked that they make the character speak specifically like a man famous for his vocal eccentricities (embodying the stereotypical gay man's voice) and for being openly gay in a time when it wasn't accepted and you don't think he had ulterior motivations for that?

ETA: Picking up on this hardly qualifies Devin as homophobic. If that label applies to anyone here, it's Lucas, who probably thought the effect would be "hilarious" knowing full-well how it would be interpreted.

As far as I know (and I don't want to look this up), Hutts aren't asexual, they're hermaphrodites that periodically change their gender identity. Maybe Ziro the Hutt is in transition. Or maybe Ziro enjoys being female so much that as a male he camps it up. Either way, I've put more thought into this than it deserves.
