The Aviator?

This sounds like a natural match for Scorsese's sensibilities. And you know the music is gonna be great.

At one point, wasn't Scorsese in talks to direct Tom Hanks in an adaptation of Nick Tosches' Dino? He's been wanting to tell the story of the Rat Pack for quite some time.

Didn't he cover Italians also in Casino?

But this could be interesting seeing how there hasn't been a Rat Pack related movie since that made for cable thing years ago with Don Cheadle as Sammy Davis.

Nice write-up, sir. Wasn't a Scorsese rat pack bio rumored years ago with Hanks as Deano & Cheadle as Sammy? Also, really want his TR bio to happen. (Leo sounds great. Hard to top Berenger in ROUGH RIDERS tho!)

I would absolutely love this one to go through (as opposed to the Marley biopic and others mentioned), didn't hurt that I was listening to the Girl from Ipanema on a best of Sinatra cd while reading the article. If anyone could nail this project, it's Scorsese.

I imagine this early in the development they haven't named any potentials for who they'd like in the role hey? I'm racking my brain trying to think of someone who'd be a good fit for the Chairman of the Board

I seem to remember Scorsesse's been trying to make a Dean Martin biopic, correct me if I'm wrong...

Doesn't Goodfellas technically count as a biopic as well?

Yes, he was trying to make a Dino biopic this was in the period before Gangs of New York I believe.

I think Dean's life and songs for that matter are far more interesting than Frank's but I have always seen it that way.

According To IMDB, Scorsese has a George Harrison biopic in pre-production, along with another project, "Rise of Theodore Roosevelt," that was previously announced. It will be interesting to see which one winds up getting made, since I doubt Scorsese is going to make three biopics in a row. I really hope the Sinatra one wins out though.

I'm surprised Teddy Roosevelt hasn't gotten the big biopic treatment yet.

I think the Harrison project is a doc (like No Direction Home), not a bio. <could be wrong!>

Agreed, although I don't think Di Caprio is the right guy for it just because of size. Although mind you I bet not many people know that TR had a very high reedy voice. Effectively if this was done 30 years ago, Richard Dryfus would've gotten the job.

True. But that's harder to do. How many full presidential bios have we had? Ford's YOUNG LINCOLN focused on his rise (what shaped his character). JFK had PT-109. JEFFERSON IN PARIS. Can't really think of anymore.

I read in an interview, Milius who directed both titles I mentioned, wanted to do a loose trilogy. I don't know what the third film would've been about. A shame didn't come to pass.

Well, enough about Teddy, on to Frankie.

Who the hell is gonna play him? The Harry Connick window has closed, I think.

I think Emile Hirsch would make a great young Sinatra actually.

I remember Connick being compared to the young Sinatra (both vocally and in appearance) when he first came on the scene, and I vaguely remember some buzz about him playing Sinatra in a biopic.

Not to derail as what Dickson said but probably the third part would've been his post-presidential life included his excursions into the Amazon and his 1912 run for the presidency.

He was labeled a young Sinatra only by virtue of the fact that nobody else under 70 was singing that kind of music in 1990. Now, of course, that scene has exploded and there are at least one or two more guys doing it. Michael Buble for Dino!

It's a shame that Rob Cohen got The Rat Pack made at HBO, because it was a rather awful biopic, but Joe Mantegna as Dino, Don Cheadle as Sammy Davis Jr. and Bobby Slayton as Joey Bishop were spot-on casting choices (not to mention how much they resemble the people they were playing). I always felt the Rat Pack story could be better told as a mini-series.

And while I remember all the rumblings back in the day about the DINO biopic, I certainly can't see Tom Hanks in the role of Dean Martin.

Finally, speaking of the Teddy Roosevelt biopic, here's my casting choice:

Australian character actor Jack Thompson:
