The only good movie that the Farrelly bros. have made. So many scenes that are hilarious. The manly love/find a happy place scene, the bathroom scene, and all the numerous little dialogue bits that make the movie great.
"I'm talking about a little place called Aspen" "I don't know Lloyd, the French are assholes." "She gave me a bunch of crap about me not listening to her enough or something, I don't know I wasn't really paying attention."

This is the only Farrellys film I can watch more than once frankly - besides maybe Kingpin.
Daniels is all sorts of awesome. "Those your skis?" "Uh huh" "Both of 'em?"

Completely forgot about Kingpin. That one's decent. Dumb And Dumber is still the peak.

The more I watch this movie, the more I feel Daniels steals the show whenever he is on screen.

Carrey is all physical comedy in the flick, while Daniels makes everything more hilarious with his brilliant delivery of the dialogue.

I disagree. Carrey's physical comedy was at its absolute peak here. I love Daniels in this.

I still prefer Kingpin, and despite it's overexposure, There's Something About Mary is some funny shit.
It stops there, as far as I'm concerned.

Oh I'm not saying Carrey's physical comedy wasn't great, it was. I was just agreeing with billylove that Daniels steals the flick, and I was saying it's because of his delivery of the clever dialogue.

They're equally great in this. It is the Farrelly's best. KINGPIN is pretty close though and I still cling to my appreciation for ME, MYSELF, AND IRENE. MARY is good for Matt Dillon and not much else.

Yeah? He's dead. Oh, man, I'm sorry. What happened? His head fell off. His head fell off? Yeah. He was pretty old.

"You had an extra pair of gloves this whole time?"
"Yeah! We're in the Rockies." These quotes are useless without Carrey and Daniels delivering the lines. |

Kingpin is greatness (I've never seen someone pick their nose with a hook before), Mary was good but it is so overplayed at this point that it's lost alot. gotta mention too...Cam Neely playying Seabass and the Roids Rocket Clemens playing the random neck in Kingpin were pretty good cameo wise.

As I've already said, Kingpin is my favorite of theirs. But Bill Murray makes that one for me. I don't want to detract from Dumb and Dumber, though, it's good stuff.

My problem with MARY was that I didn't see it until like a year after it first came out. By that time it was so built up that unless it was THE NAKED GUN x 100 it was going to let me down. It's okay, and yeah, it's nice to see Keith David show of his comedy chops. But Dillon just outshines everyone in the movie.
I haven't seen anything those guys have done since SHALLOW HAL. I'd probably give STUCK ON YOU a try if I caught it on cable but that's about it in terms of desire to see their recent output. |

I really didn't like Jim Carrey's early 90s comedy so I didn't run out and see Dumb & Dumber. Kingpin was my first Farrelly Brothers movie. It was glorious.

That's strange. " "Yeah, we called it a bullshit." "What are the chances of a guy like you and a girl like me... ending up together? " "Well, that's pretty difficult to say. " "Hit me with it! I've come a long way to see you, Mary. The least you can do is level with me. What are my chances?" "Not good. " "You mean, not good like one out of a hundred? " "I'd say more like one out of a million. " "So you're telling me there's a chance. " |

We were talking about this in chat last night. Love love love love love the movie, but the uncut/extended dvd release kind of kills some of the scenes for me.. I prefer the 'classic' cut.
Harry: I expected the Rocky Mountains to be a little rockier than this. Lloyd: I was thinking the same thing. That John Denver's full of shit, man. Harry: But he blamed me. You heard him. Those were his last words. Lloyd: ..Not if you count the gurgling sound.

In a movie filled with great lines, this might be my favorite.
Plus (paraphrasing)" "How bout 7:45?" "Well, I got some stuff to do. Why don't we make it a quarter to eight?" [laughs incredulously] "Okay, 7:45." Carrey does the flashier stuff, but I have to agree with the folks saying that it's Daniels' show. Without him the movie's just a decent Jim Carrey comedy. With him it's a goldmine. "Roast beef au jews? Who's got the roast beef au jews?" Having said that, my favorite of Carrey's physical bits has to be when he comes home to the apartment and slumps to the ground, defeated.

For those that may say Daniels can't do physical comedy, see the Turbo Lax scene.
I think I nearly passed out the first time I saw that.

Dumb and Dumber is the funniest movie of all time.
It was one of those special movies that brought together talent all at their peaks before impending valleys in their careers. Jim Carrey has never been funnier, his physical talents didn't overshadow the actual dialogue in the movie. Jeff Daniels was just brilliant plain and simple playing Harry Dunn as a loveable doofus. Who knew he could do comedy? Finally, the Farrellys...their career clearly peaked with dumb and dumber. Their movies that followed clearly tried to up the gross out factor as a replacement for actual comedy. Also, I can't find it on Youtube, but there was this great SNL skit back in the day when Daniels was hosting, and I think it was one of Farley's Movie interviews where he kept asking Jeff Daniels about all his dramatic/serious movie work only to keep cutting to clips of Daniels on the toilet in Dumb and Dumber. I thought that was brilliant.

My fave line is,
"Its OK! I'm a limo driver!" The delivery and the way he flashes his card is fuckin hilarious...and then, "I fell off the jetway again" Also when they are spending all the money and Carrey is wearing some awful cowboy outfit and the gloves have got tassels on. the way he carries his arms kills me every time Last edited by Rusty Oysterburger; 03-12-2008 at 12:49 PM. |

I'm still madly in love with Carrey's dream sequence. Just the way he gets knocked down and that little sound he makes when coming back up is priceless.
"Excuse me, miss, what's the soup du jour?" "It's the soup of the day." "mmm...that sounds good. I'll have that." "I can't believe nobody in this town is hiring!" "Yeah, unless you want to work 40 hours a week." One of the best comedies ever made.

Most of my favorite moments from this movie have already been mentioned, but I have to note the importance of Mike Starr. I almost wish his character didn't die because his moments interacting with Carrey and Daniels are priceless.
Most underrated part of the movie: Starr on the pay phone and the way he deals with the guy waiting to use it. |

I saw this in the theater with my dad when it came out. I remember him busting up during the laxative/broken toliet scene.
And I do remember people quoting, "What you doing there? Suckin' on grandpa's cough medicine?" in high school. And that movie introduced me to the wonder that is the giant foam cowboy hat.

Confession: I've still never seen Dumb & Dumber. I waited too late to see it and all my friends browncoated it to death. I intend to someday but this thread isn't helping.
![]() Leaving that one out, I rank the Farelly product: Kingpin > Mary > Irene > Stuck On You > herpes > Shallow Hal > death by fire > The Heartbreak Kid. Haven't seen Osmosis Jones or Fever Pitch.

I have to agree with the Jeff Daniels love. I first saw this one when I was pretty young, junior-highish I'd say, and Jim Carrey was the main draw for me. But watching it again older, Daniels totally kills the dialogue and takes this movie.

Osmosis was ok, had some funny bits.
Fever Pitch, was a complete piece of ass. The leads are black holes of talent and literally no one in the supporting class had enough chops to carry the film. Plus the plot was the closest equivalent of a power dump written on paper.

It's hard to imagine a Bill Murray performance being underrated, but I truly think McCracken is one of the great comic creations. Just brilliantly conceived and performed by Murray. And, I think, no less meritorious a performance than, say, LOST IN TRANSLATION. That's right, I said it.

No doubt, but in terms of quoted to the point of annoyance it's CADDYSHACK that takes the cake. But on the other hand I'm glad gems like "Hi... not you... hi" haven't gone too mainstream. That's a quick way for them to lose their charm.
