I’m terrible at multitasking so I've been in a pattern the last 4 years of working for a year, then take a year off to work on my movie. I'm in the make a movie part of the cycle for another 3 weeks then I'll start looking for work again.

Last Job I had was at a warehouse/depot for an electrical cable manufacturer. So I almost make Nicks joke work.

I read this after seeing your patience worn down to nothing in the Salma Hayek thread (http://chud.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101004), and it gave me a good laugh.

Computer programmer for an insurance company. It's boring, but according to a recent Devin article, I'm going to hell when I die, so there's that to look forward to.

Recently, two young Mormons came stumping at my door, and unlike most Americans, I actually enjoy conversing with these young chaps in order to confuse their theology, but when these tie-clad soul-salesmen found out I was a computer programmer, that's all they wanted to talk about. Tragic really. I guess the moral of the story is that working a job that will send you to hell is somehow way more appealling than a life spent in the Church of Latter Day Saints. Nice.

Brian C. Haley
06-07-2007, 03:48 AM
It didn't take long.

I had to break a 50 at the bar around the corner from my office. My sole intent was to have some small bills for coffee and the bus home. I had two choices: walk around the narrow marsh moat seperating our parking lot from the bar or cut across in the unsure footing of the darkness. Drunk, I cut across hoping the best. I stomped three quarters of the way and stepped knee-deep in a shallow water pass along the way. Fuck.

I arrive and, in order to break the large bill, the bartender requires me to drink. I'm unable to finish the beer, fifteen drinks into the night, on no sleep with six hours of work ahead of me.

Most of that was on the clock. I'm back and ready for nap time.

Don't drink before work.

I recently sold my small freelance sound company to a larger sound company (assets included) for a nice price (my house is now over half paid off four years after buying). Larger sound company then decided to try and attract low budget filmmakers so they opened up a boutique style sound house with me running it. It allows us to give deals to smaller projects without compromising price on the big budget stuff ie) we don't charge indie filmmakers $400/hour for studio time.

Good news is that I'm my own boss and I do what I love. Bad news is that I get paid like I'm my own boss. Thankfully I have a wife who makes good money. The next three years are going to be very lean around the S~ household.

In my spare time I write scripts and hit people with big pieces of rattan.

Keep in mind that med school is 4 years, then you have a good few years of internship and residency. Getting that shit out of the way earlier rather than later is a good thing - the older you get, the shittier 120 hour work weeks become. Not that it can't be done, but I think its a lot easier if you're doing it in the 20s and 30s, not 40s.

That's definitely the plan. I'm saving up for all the schoolin' needed with the electrical work, and getting the Masters license will give me something to fall back on with the wait.

Yeah, and even lame grants are getting much harder to come by with all the money going to the war and not to NIH.

No offense, but paying off student loans after is easier (and often more cost effective) than saving up on the front end. You've probably already done that math, but I'd definitely suggest paying off student loans as a doctor over saving up as an electrician to avoid the loans.
