Even with that terrible closing line, any movie starring Owen, Giamatti, and Bellucci has my money opening day.

Any movie that has Bellucci in a low cut corset running really fast has my money openeing day.
But yeah, this movie looks like a lot of fun.

This and Smokin' Aces are (probably) coming out around Q1 of next year. It's nice to see some cool little b-movies coming out in the first few months of the year to wash away all of the suck.

If this "guy runs around with a baby while firing guns" thing catches on, we might finally see a NOMAD movie from marvel.

Agreed. As denizens of the official B movie thread, I think this movie along with Crank and hopefully smoking aces is going to re-usher in an age that produced classic after classic. That age of course was the 80s.

What's cool about SHOOT'EM UP and SMOKIN' ACES is that they're populated with a lot of actors you don't typically associate with those type of films. Between those 2 and ROGUE the first half of '07 is looking good for the genre.

This looks fuckin' sweet. The test screening reviews on Ain't It Cool News weren't exactly promising as the reviewers reeked of being plants, but I'm holding out hope for an entertaining movie.

After hearing about how there was so much buzz for the original test reel for this movie, I must say I'm pretty disappointed. What happened to all the amazing, groundbreaking, super-kinetic stuff people had been referring to over and over again?

Maybe not included in a 90-second teaser?

Good chance, but it's always a plus to show how your film is ahead of the pack with at least a hint of the amazingness within.

Yep, ditto. When I first heard about this project I thought it was going to be revolutionary or something but it just looks like Crank with a baby. Not too interesting, despite the excellent cast. I mean I love action as much as the next guy but after a while I get tired of all the posing with guns and bullets hitting anything but the hero, I need a twist on the genre to keep me interested and this doesnt seem to have anything unique about it. Giamatti does look great though.

I'm looking forward to this but it didn't get me going like the Smoking Aces trailer did. Like said it looked pretty ordinary.

Well, I think you are going to be disappointed then. Davis has basically said this will be an extended version of Hard Boiled's scenes involving Chow Yun Fat protecting the baby. It is his homage to Woo, so if you don't like woo me thinks you aren't going to like this movie.

I think the Crank comparison is actually a good one though. It does feel like the pacing is going to be much quicker than Woo's action beats, which were definitely more deliberate and built around a big setpiece.

I love Woo (Uh, HK Woo that is, and I guess anything up to Face/Off). I dont find the thought of taking the baby scenario from Hard Boiled and building an entire movie around it terribly exciting. The great thing about Woo's Hard Boiled is that its just a random baby that gets swept up in a violent action scene, there's no particular meaning behind it, whereas Shoot Em Up is going to try to make us give a shit about protecting the baby and you know we're not going to, so why bother?

My real disappointment though is that I thought there was going to be some kind of new camera technique or special effect in this film that wow'ed producers or something. From the trailer it just looks like a regular action flick, but anyone know if there is something unique visually about this movie?

I don't know if they kept all the stuff that was in those animated storyboards that the director used to sell the movie. The visuals of the movie weren't supposed to be new, but the action was supposed to be like John Woo to the nth degree. The animation showed things like in the car chase the hero drives his car into a head on collision with the bad guys van, then he flies through the windshield into the van, turns around and shoots the driver. There was also a scene where the hero had rigged some shotguns in another room so he could control them remotely by pulling on strings and it looked pretty silly. There's also supposed to be a scene where the guys jump from an airplane and they have a shoot out on the way down. The animation had some text at the end like "this movie is John Woo's wet dream" or something like that.

The animation had some text at the end like "this movie is John Woo's wet dream" or something like that.

It had some other, similar comments sprinkled through-out as I recall. It must take some balls to say that about the movie you haven't made yet, I'd think, and I was almost interested just because of that but the animation all struck me as being at least as silly as that "guns on strings" bit. Actually that was my favourite idea in the whole thing, but I couldn't imagine the guy who suggested all the other crap being able to pull it off well.

Apart from the casting I never understood the buzz around this movie. This trailer makes it look better than I expected, but it still doesn't actually look good. Between the boring animation, the amateurish script excerpts, and now this pedestrian trailer that recalls, to my mind, Ecks VS Sever a lot more strongly than anything by John Woo, can anyone explain what I'm missing here? I'd love to be even more wrong about this than I was when I almost missed Crank, but I just don't see anything about this that indicates it will be anything but a bore. I want to see Giamatti in an action film as much as anyone, but it has to earn him.

This one has tentatively been pushed back from February to September of '07.

The premise and tone of this thing has always seemed like a movie that would either be very good, or very bad. The audacity of it is either going to work, or crash and burn. That's the vibe I get. That said, getting pushed to September makes some sense. February is the wasteland for movies, and everyone knows it. Whereas the last few years have seen a September actioner doing quite well, usually from Jason Statham.

Yeah, but September might be even more of a dumping ground. This news is ass.

Just saw the trailer for this on HDNet's "Nothing But Trailers", and I'm hooked as well. I would guess this bodes well for a Sept. 07 release still, since they're showing it there.
