View Full Version : Faggot

Doug

Some meathead in a landscaper truck almost drove into me as he plowed his way onto the road. I was so angry my initial reaction was to yell "You fucking faggot!"
I detest homophobia. My mind reached for what it thought would be the most stinging insult for a guy like this. Is that wrong?

Next time, shout "No FreeRobotSex for YOU!"

I prefer "shitmouth" to people who can't drive, myself.

I tend to run with the modern classic "Cocksucker" (or in my case the swedish equivalent - "kuksugare"), inspired by that master of profanity: Al Swearengen.

Might I suggest, instead of "Faggot" next time, you try the lesser used (and quite offensive) insult du jour of my general area... Ass Monkey. Shitmouth would work well in this instance, but (no pun intended) it doesn't roll off the tongue as well. You could also try, for your cursing pleasure, the following:
- shitbird
- fuckstick

or (if you're not wanting to use actual curse words):
- Goat Roper
- bastard (an old classic)

Just trying to help...

I get serious road rage, and when a teeny bopper chick cut me off and almost T-boned me, I made sure she could read my lips screaming " You Stupid Fucking Cunt!".
That felt good.

I'll bite. I can't say that it was necessarily wrong to use a homosexual euphemism in this instance, especially since it wasn't one you conciously decided upon. It's a term that has been in frequent use in our society for some time, so blurting it out isn't particularly unexpected. I doubt you meant any offense to anyone beyond the meathead in question.

long7000
08-25-2006, 11:23 AM
I think that you were in the right as well to call out an offensive term and shouldn't be too worried about which one you chose.
I was just offering some other ones that you might use in the future.

It's borderline, Bob. Say five 'I Will Survive's and a 'Dancing Queen'.

Perhaps I should have made the point of this thread clearer...
Is it wrong? Sure it is. Calling someone a stupid cunt, or a faggot, or a cocksucker, or an asshole is never technically right, it's spouting hate. What you did was instinctively pull up a hurtful word to call someone, and sine you detest homophobia so much, your brain associates the word "faggot" as one of the worst things you can call somebody. I don't, on the other hand, think you should be looked down upon for it, because when we're pissed we scream things that in civilized conversation we wouldn't automatically say. If it bothers you though, you should consciously try to eliminate that word from your vocabulary.

How do you know what would be the most stinging insult for that guy? Did you know him? Perhaps he was homosexual.

Is it wrong? Wrong to insult someone? Ehh. Borderline, I suppose. We all make mistakes when driving. Is it worth cursing someone over? As for as the insult goes...definitely wrong.

Something I learned in my education classes: Visual Aides. Keep a ledgible cardboard plackard that says BALL LICKER for the guys and CUNT WAGON for the ladies in your vehicle at all times. Get cut off, waive the sign. Nothing freaks drivers out like having a CUNT WAGON sign directed at them as you pass by.

Oh, and be sure to translate the phrase into multiple languages. You don't have to speak English to be a asshole on the road.

I may have to add Goat Roper to my vocabulary.

Even though I'm sure it's not the case; you could claim, subconsciously, that you actually tried calling the dude:

1. A bundle of sticks, also called faggots.
2. That perfect piece of British food, the pig meatball, funnily enough also called a faggot. Let's face it, they are really tasty with gravy and mushy peas. Ahh, lovely.

If you can convince yourself of the above facts, you can sleep well again.

'Faggot' is no more acceptable a word to use than 'nigger' if you think about it.

However, while I never have called anyone 'nigger', years ago I had to train myself out of saying 'faggot' and now, after years of conditioning, I would never say it even in a fit of rage.

My next project is to phase out the word 'cunt' from my vocab. (You'd be surprised how often 'cunt' is used in Ireland and the UK.) 'Prick', 'motherfucker' and 'asshole' are now my insults of choice.

It's not a fine line at all. You didn't call him gay. You called him a faggot. Also, as you don't know the guy (presumably) how would you know what would insult this guy? You used a word that would insult you, if someone cursed you with that word.

Chon's point is valid, though. The question is whether you would call a Klan member a nigger to piss them off.

Hey, that might be fun.

EDIT: It's hard though. "Faggot" has been ingrained in our language as an amorphous insult. I've found myself using it a couple times - not to call someone homosexual, but just to call them a "bad name." That's the problem, though. It IS a derogative term for a specific group, and any use of it, deliberate or not, insults the group, as well as the person you are trying to slam.

Precisely. Whereas motherfucker, assclown, shithead, asshole, etc, etc are all-encompassing and not focused on one particular group, thereby making them "safe" insults. That is until some group decides to start refering to themselves as "motherfuckers" - at which point we'll have to start feeling bad when we sling that around.

Help me out here. I don't get to read the boards as often as I'd like. I've been reading more the last week or so and so there's this thing where in pretty much every thread I read at some point somebody posts a picture of Dolph Lungren. Is that supposed to be funny or signify something that I'm just not understanding? Is this somebody's idea of advanced performance art humor? I'm genuinely befuddled.

This seems semantic. You lost it and used a naughty word. Feel guilty. No big deal. Certainly not an "incedent" worthy of an online case study in cognitive dissonance.

I mean, at this point, anyone still offended, or worried about offending, should shoot themselves in the face — fuck, just aim the gun; I'll pull the trigger for you.

I'm pretty sure it's yet another facet to the Moltisanti legacy of unfunny. He has a Lundgren fetish that's ostensibly hilarious. The picture got dropped in one thread, and now it seems to be making the rounds, like a Family Guy-style random pop culture reference. Similarly, it offers the illusion of comedy, minus the laughs.

That's okay. Laughing takes too much energy, anyway, and with this sort of meta-humor, I can easily avoid staining my monitor/keyboard/mouse/desk/pants with Coke/milk/mineral water/vomit/pee.

I have friends that use the word "faggot" around me, I know none of them are homophobic, it's just a word you grow up with because it is, in fact, more acceptable to use that word as opposed to "nigger", "zipperhead", "wetback", or whatever.
I don't get huffy about it, I don't say "hold on guys, that's enough of that!", because the word used jokingly, haphazardly or as a default is not entirely unexpected, but when the word is used *pointedly* and with specific harmful intent, that's when you're in trouble with me.
Luckily I've not really had this problem since high school, and I hang out with friends (straigh, bi-, and gay) who while leaning towards the politically incorrect, never lean towards complete idiocy.

The word will maybe eventually fade as time passes, or be entirely and benignly co-opted, but until then, I won't cry about it (especially with the list of Jew/holocaust jokes I've made).

How does he know if the it would insult this guy? Apparently you've never met any meathead landscapers before. Assumptions don't get much safer, if you were to poll 1000 meathand landscapers at least 999 of them would be offended by being called a faggot.

Have I met any meathead landscapers before? Not sure about meathead, but landscapers? Most definitely. I used to work in the landscape supply field.

You think 999 of them would be offended? Probably so, because about 600 of them are gay.

swedish miyagi

So you think 60% of landscapers are gay based on your work in the landscape supply business? What were you selling, lawn statues of that dude pissing.

I don't think he's talking exterior design style landscapers here. With meathead being a key part of the description I think it's more a standard blue collar, Bush loving Republican, whose dream is to one day drive around in a truck that sits 14 feet off the ground. Generally, I don't think their too fond of being mistaken for Richard Simmons considering they somehow have a problem with gay marriage.

Adam, please, the Mel Gibson joke was decent at worst. And like Devin, you're not funny enough yourself to be calling other people not funny. The rapist's wit crack would be good if you didn't unoriginally hack it off Dumb and Dumber.

Cockblaster
Jizzcatcher

Great scene in River's Edge where Keanu Reeves is shouting at a guy who is living with/freeloading off of Keanu's mom:

Better if you hear it in context, but funny just the same.

Hearing someone called a 'faggot' usually tells me more about the caller than the call-ee.
