View Full Version : A Movie I Will Love for the Rest of My Life: BRAZIL

The library here at Full Sail is small, but it's got a helluva punch. Highlights: Edward Scissorhands, Godfather 1 & 2, etc., etc....

...And a 2-disk Criterion Collection edition of Brazil. One of my classes had been cancelled for the day, so I decided to pick Brazil up and take a look (Blofeld had raved about it before, I believe).

IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT, MAKE IT THE NEXT MOVIE YOU SEE. It's one of those movies you refer to as: The Good Stuff, or ya know, maybe The Best Movie I've Ever Seen.

If I ever make it to the big leagues, I can only hope to be half as good as Terry Gilliam.

*SPOILER*
I think what did it for me was the ending. During his "escape," I was desperate for this to be reality. I needed this to be reality as badly as he did. So, in a way, I was satisfied with the very end of it. It is now his reality, and I hope he never wakes up from it. In the same respect, it is an absolutely horrible (not bad, as in, this is horror, terror) ending.

You'll make it, kid. I've been to the future and trust me, you make it.

And you're right. It's the ending that seals the deal. That look on his face says it all...

*SPOILER*

Man oh man, the movie just shot into 6th gear at his kidnapping. Cut to black, gunshots, the slots in the bag open up, you see the interviews, then he's in the interrogation/torture room bit.

From the moment you see Michael Palin walk out in the far far distance, you know who it is already. You just know it. You know who that is behind the mask and you don't know how to feel about that.

It wasn't my number two pick in the movie draft for nothing!

Seriously, I love the dream sequences, especially the samurai. And the ending is brilliant.

It's truly one of the visionary films of all time.

This has been one of my favorite films since it was released theatrically. It's Gilliam's best, as well as one of better movies out there. You can't go wrong with Gilliam at all, in my opinion. But if you had to pick one of his movies to love, this should be it.

Well, Imperator...

The obvious: It's a Terry Gilliam film. From that, you can expect: HUGE sets, brilliant camera work, and dark, angry (quirky) Python humor. Michael Palin is PERFECT in his role, which isn't goofy, isn't over-blown, just...perfect. Robert DeNiro plays a bit part, which you hardly ever see ('cept Jackie Brown, I think).

So far as the story goes:

It's about flights of fantasy. And the nightmare of reality. Terrorist bombings. And late night shopping. True Love. And creative plumbing.

Anything else?

Depending what day you ask me, and what mood I'm in, either this film or LAWRENCE OF ARABIA is my favorite movie of all time.

You're right about the ending being the thing that really pushes it over the top. When I realized that in some truly sick Terry Gilliam way, that was a "happy ending," I fell in love. I sat there in the theater, gobsmacked, as the credits rolled. Then I walked outside, bought another ticket, and went right back in for the next show.

Nice to see it get mentioned and discussed.

I never got the chance to see Brazil in the theater -- Orlando was pretty ass-backward back then -- but when I saw it on video, I did the same thing, rewound it and watched it again immediately. There's just too much to take in in one viewing, so many little background details that are just perfect.

Looking at the boxes now...

Letterboxed...
Remastered soundtrack...
What Is Brazil? documentary...
The Battle of Brazil: A Video History...
Production notebook:
Stoppard and McKeown walk-through of three drafts and three treatments...
Production designs...
Costume Designer stuff...
Storyboards for dream sequences (many of which didn't make it into the film)...
Michael Kamen explains the score...
Special effects with raw footage of unfinished effects...
Trailer...
Production and publicity stills...

Guess not. It's been said that Gillian was so dissappointed by Kim Griest's performance that he cut a lot of her stuff out of the film...Is that something like what you refer to? Or something?

DJ, the three-disc set Nick refers to contains the edit of the film Lew Wasserman wanted to release because he thought it was "better" than Gilliam's. It basically ends about two minutes before Gilliam's does, so the twist at the end is completely gone, as are all the dream sequences. Hmm, a film about the power of imagination with all the imagination cut out, yeah, that'll work. You know, sometimes I really begrudge Spielberg for saving that ass Wasserman's job with Jaws.

I've got the 3-disc Brazil set on order and it should be arriving sometime next week, I'm so happy I can hardly contain myself!

I think this is truly a marvelous movie. Great sets, acting, scripts, camerawork. Fear and Loathing beats it out of my top Gilliam spot, yet this is certainly a close second.

This film was amazing. Sorry to chime in so late. If it wasn't for BlackCrowe, I might never have seen it. Not just that, but the full behind the scenes stuff as well.

Deej, where the hell are you? Oh, and also, yes it is a painful, bittersweet ending. Sometimes the best films turn the formula on its ear. It's not always going to leave you with a lighthearted feeling of joy, but a deep sense of... emotion.

Wonderful film.

Aw, Time Bandits IS weak. It's probably because of this weakness that Gilliam has been re-making Time Bandits through his whole career. Baron Munchausen, anyone?
Granted, Baron Munchausen didn't have a whole lot of dwarfs in it, but it did feature that hairy comedian.
Brazil is really more Walter Mitty than 1984, It's dystopian, but in the way corny late 30's musicals are dystopian. Brazil didn't have that hairy comedian in it, but it did have the Mario Bros. getting killed by poop.

Just how are Twelve Monkeys, The Fisher King, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Brazil, even The Adventures of Baron Munchausen "remakes" of Time Bandits?

And, didn't you know that Time Bandits, Baron Munchausen and Brazil are thematically linked into what some consider Gilliam's trilogy? These films explore the nature of fantasy and reality, and all that...

I don't like Time Bandits much, but I think Baron is a damn fine film.

I have Brazil and Twelve Monkeys on DVD. Baron is the next to go in my sack.

Humbly, Time Bandits has no friggin' plot and was made for a dime; but it does have great symbolism and imagery - almost all of which finds a way to return in a more understandable, relevant and expensive way in Baron Munchausen.
I wouldn't go so far as to posit the existance of a Gilliamverse, trilogy, or whatever. I would say that in Time Bandits, there were a lot of ambitious ideas that got more fully realized in the later films.
That's all.

I was gonna make a new thread, but I guess I shall just resurrect this 5 year old thread...

Anyways I just watched Brazil all the way through for the first time last night. Absolutley adored it absured and nightmarish and with such a powerful ending.

I remember trying to watch the film when I first got into Gilliam's films after I saw Twelve Monkeys, when I was 13 or so. I got through Time Bandits, Munchausen even the bleedin' Fisher King but I remember watching Brazil as a kid and not knowing what to make of it. Promptly switching it off after 20 minutes...what a mistake.

Love, love, love the film.
