I just got my invite to the battlefront beta test and signed up! I usually miss this because you only have a few hours before the beta test fills up. If any of you guys is signed with the the PS2 "Playstation Underground" stuff, check your email now and sign up.

Well, I only have a bit of time late at night to play this and haven't had a chance to really test everything, so far I've got mixed feelings about this game.

The beta has 3 maps available, the Tantive IV, Utapau and a space battle over kashykk.

The interesting thing about the game is that it has "heroes" that you can take over and control. For example, the Tantive IV you can play as Darth Vader or princess Leia. In the Utapau level, there's Griveous and Obi Wan. I still haven't figured out what the "heroes" are in the space battle map.

The space battle map is interesting, it shows a lot of promise but it's riddled with lag and I find it very confusing. You start at one of the capital ships and depending on the type of game, you have to either destroy elements of the enemy capital ship or board it (to say, capture the flag).

THe lag on this maps is just horrible, I still want to give it another try, not sure if this is just the way the map is built or people with bad bandwidth were hosting it.

The lag on the original game was awful when I tried it on Xbox Live. If they've not fixed that, the sequel can piss off.

I've been playing the PC version of the original online, and having great fun.

Well, let me see, hopefully by this weekend most people would have gotten the CD and I can test more. Right now there's not a lot of players, but I've been trying late at night.

Also, there's rarely any space map servers, so I'm hoping with more people I can test this further.

The "hero" stuff is interesting, I had a lot of fun playing as Obi Wan and Grievious the other night. You're almost unstoppable when in this mode. Heroes also have "special" moves, like Obi Wan and Grievious can throw their lightsabers, and I think Obi has some controllable force powers (haven't been able to use them yet).

Played as Leia last night, but only lasted a few seconds. I read somewhere that she can "heal" troops.

Haven't had a chance to play as Vader, but did get killed by him.

On the beta board they're saying there's a playable Yoda an Han, haven't seen these yet though.

Beta test is over, and I don't have a very good impression of this game.

One disturbing thing was how very few people were testing the game in the first place, during the last days, few rooms had people in them and at most you would see 1,2 or 3 playing at a time. It was truly pathetic.

The game was very laggy, and didn't offer much more than the first version. The maps they provided were not that great, and I find the first game to be more fun than this one.

The "hero" stuff is neat, but when you are Grievious or Obi-Wan, you basically just button smash your way in a crowded area and kill everybody. Never got a chance to play as Han, but did play as Leia, and that's really not a great character to have in a FPS.

I have to blame the beta testers too, in the beta test boards, these people were constantly complaining about the various bugs ... but they never got that this was a beta test and that's part of the deal, to report and play around those bugs. So there was never a sense of community, and it just spolied the whole experience.

I hope the final maps are much better, and that the space battle maps prove to be more fun, less laggy and less confusing. The space battle stuff has promise, but what I played was just not fun.
