Has anyone seen Ang Lee's homage to the Martial Arts film? I heard it was the hit of Cannes. Too bad it wont come out until this Winter.

aww come on, pretty please?

Eddie5
07-20-2000, 01:57 PM
Damn you! You used the please and comboed it with pretty.Unfair.

It was good.A lil secret, though. Its not really a martial arts movie. Its a love story. Two love stories, in fact. Dont get me wrong, though. There are lots smacking, jumping, flying and swordwork involved. Its inventive and surreal. Chow Yun Fat is way cool here. Michelle Yeoh is equally fearsome. They are the Jedis of the piece. She has a few extended fights which is quite something else.

Theres extensive wirework here.I just hope no one thinks of comparing this with The Matrix though I think it will be inevitable. There will always be one Nitwit who will think that The Matrix is the grandpapa of High Scaled Fighting.

"There will always be one Nitwit who will think that The Matrix is the grandpapa of High Scaled Fighting."

Good GOD-don't I know it. Like wires and slo-mo didn't exist before Keanu showed us THE WAY.

But you say "Ching Siu-Tung" and they all go, "Huuuuhh?"

Philestines.

Heh Heh. Philestines.

And they'd never guess he'd be quite a famous director ( at least in these here parts) not unless they hear his christian name.

But why tell?

Eddie:tell anyone who tries that,"but it's like MATRIX" crap,to eat sh*t.crumbs, you would think wirework and slo-mo techniques were invented by the Wachowskis'.they stole the wirework from hundreds of Hong Kong movies and "bullet time",ain't exactly 100% original either.it's like the X-men thing.so what if they use wirework.Matrix does'nt own a patent on any of the techniques it used.

Oh, you're so right-Castleass! I DON'T want to go there again-seeing as how you gave me such a TROUNCING last time!

And hey-try advertising that law degree a little more-that makes you smarter!

Are you a practicing lawyer? 'Cause let me tell you-I wouldn't want to be represented by a guy who can't figure out where the apostrophe goes in a compound-

Try between the "n" and the "t"-not before the "n".

You have talked about how little your posts matter to you-well, honey-they mean less to me-and while I'm not speaking for everyone-I think I am!

Get thee fucked!

seriously,I don't have the energy or time to embarass you again,so I'll have to be the bigger man and apologize.I am sorry for all the mean and nasty things I have said to you,HAM.I was being childish to keep our war of words alive last time,so we should all be grown ups and let bygones be bygones.peace.

Problem with these type of sites (new sites, that are constantly growing)

The posters who have been here a whole 6 months, get a big head and cliques get formed. Then a whole load of new people come in, and suddenly the guys who thought they were too awsome have new people to deal with.
Soo, when the board was all of 200 people ,HAM people MIGHT have dug you. I forsee when there are 2000 people, you will be considered a loser. IF YOU KEEP ON WITH YOUR KNOW IT ALL, I AM COOL attitude.
The world is moving HAM, keep up or you will get left behind.

Hell, Ive seen the small backlash start just in the last couple weeks.

Go ahead, now, come back with a good "fuck off blackchode" comment.

Jason Pollock
07-20-2000, 06:37 PM
Sorry. I'm completely out of cool comments.

Everybody hates me.

McTaggard
07-20-2000, 07:04 PM
Ham, I don't hate you man. I disagree with you once in a while but I have moved into that enlightened realm where I can disagree with someone and not defame their character. You see BlackCrowe, there will forever be cliques, it is human nature. But you can become a part of any clique if you so desire, all you have to do is share a common ground. Even if you don't want to join a clique, you can still be civil. You do not have to attack. I feel the common grounds here at CHUD are Movies and Sarcasm. If you can't take a joke, or if you feel that what something said isn't a joke, Let it go... There is too much stress in life, no body needs to come here and read the bitchfests. That is why Nick created The Ring.

McTaggart

i wanst being mean or anything , and i think HAM knows that. I find most of his post well informed. And when we disgree , I actually am entertained. I was only pointing out a fact for him to consider. Cause lately it seem people are easily agitated (as i should know, people including HAM bitch at me too))
It was only meant as something to think about as this site grows in size and membership.cause Sometimes, HAM comes off damn gruff, and he knows that. (like his "i'd knock out a pot head that messed with me" kinda talk) like all pot heads are "out of it", buts lets NOT get on that again. I'm just trying to explain. Hell, I for one love to argue, it passes the time at work!

MCTAGGARD and BLACKCROWE:I've been having the same problem with Quatermass lately.all of CHUD is supposed to hate me.wrong.Quater and some of his "clique" have it in for me.I won't spend the rest of my days apologising for some imagined slight to your "crew".people are beginning to see you for what you really are Quater.a troublemaker, who likes to show how big he is in CHUD.

Seriously, I find the whole lot of you terribly irritating.

castlemane4X

c'mon.you can make jokes about it,but it's a serious problem.one that's easily fixed by general non-aggression.except some folks enjoy making others feel small.everyone knows I can handle myself in these things, but at least I'm smart enough to realise the error of my ways.everyone just wants a cool relaxed atmosphere, but it is being made impossible by the rehashing of old grudges and the like.

Maybe I'm way off base here, but I think the exchange between McTaggard and Quatermass was supposed to be funny on both sides? I think castle is projecting his lack of thick skin on to others... Let it go, fer chrissakes!

But, hell, I'm with king of all... when the heck is this thing coming out???

castlemane4X
07-21-2000, 10:52 AM
guess you could say the same for Blackcrowe,eh Neil.or maybe he's imagining it as well.

Neil Bung
07-21-2000, 12:07 PM
I was talking about McTaggard's response to Quatermass' request that he be hated more than HAM. It was "humor," from what I could see and did not concern BlackCrowe. You seemed to interpret the exchange as a fight, which I do not believe it to be. I felt obliged to correct this oversight (and am now regretting it).

My advice: keep on making your points, but change your tone. Everything you say sounds like it's bound to end up in a heated debate. The best way to make "a cool relaxed atmosphere" is to stop seriously discussing how to accomplish it, and just start relaxing... ummm... coolly.

Now, when's that movie coming out?

Dogwelder
07-21-2000, 01:32 PM
Movie? What movie? heh imdb has it listed as being released December 22.

castlemane4X
07-21-2000, 01:43 PM
I dig that Neil.kinda hard not to get a tad touchy when you have obscenities flying in yer face.but hopefully that's all sorted and this thread can get back to what matters:

Chow Yun Fat.

does he do martial art stunts in the movie.unlike alot of other Hong Kong stars,he seems to eschew martial arts in favour of 45'automatics.I assume this is because he is'nt trained, but I'm not sure.

Dogwelder
07-21-2000, 01:50 PM
Well Chow has done Martial Arts stuff before. (Once A Thief) I dont think Martial Arts talent has much to do with acting in Hong Kong films. Look at Leslie Chueng in Bride With White Hair for example.

Jason Pollock
07-21-2000, 02:00 PM
Most HK martial arts flicks feature stars that don't know any.
Excellent chorography and extensive doubling makes it work.

Chow knows absolutely no martial arts. But he knows the HK system-and under the masterful eye of Yuen Woo-Ping (who no one knew before the Matrix) he will look just fine.

castlemane4X
07-21-2000, 02:01 PM
well Chow's a great actor whether he knows martial arts or no.of his western films I think ANNA AND THE KING got the short straw with the critics.I thought his King was pretty majestic compared to Yul Brynner's buffoonish potrayal.

Dogwelder
07-21-2000, 02:02 PM
Hey I knew him before the Matrix!

Jason Pollock
07-21-2000, 02:08 PM
I can tell. You know your HK...

And yes, Anna did get jacked by critics and audiences. Austere, lavish, wonderfully-acted all around-and very sweet. I don't understand why that movie died.

castlemane4X
07-21-2000, 02:19 PM
I could'nt understand it either.but I get the feeling that a lot of western critics are'nt willing to give Chow a chance because of his "heroic action" background.one numnutz said he looked uncomfortable in a lavish period drama without his two guns.

his greatest Hong Kong movie.that's a tough one.for me it would be a three way tie between "A BETTER TOMMOROW PART TWO","THE KILLER" and "HARD BOILED".

Dogwelder
07-21-2000, 02:25 PM
I have a strange affinity for Peace Hotel. I'm not quite sure why to be honest.

Jason Pollock
07-21-2000, 02:25 PM
I would say The Killer (Woo says that this is the idealized, heroic extension of Yun-Fat), Wild Search (basically a remake of Witness-good dramatic turn), or Treasure Hunt (I thnk this film is Yun-Fat just being himself-in real life-he's a big goof).

Oh-and An Autumn's Tale.

The stupid part of that critic's comment is that Chow made a career out of being a romanic lead long before touching a firearm on screen.

castlemane4X
07-21-2000, 02:39 PM
thats right.he was meant to be a huge soap star in Hong Kong before he even met Woo.he was a ladies man before he was an action man. I think the greatest film Chow never made was "BULLET IN THE HEAD".that was one of the most powerful films I've ever seen, and Woo should have given him a part in his opus.it gets a lot of comparisons with the DEER HUNTER,due to it's subject matter and the infamous "russian roulette" sequences, but where the Deer Hunter wallowed in it's own melanchony for vast periods,BITH never lets up or slows down

honorable mention should go to the two GOD OF GAMBLERS movies with him in it.
