Wait a few seconds. Click "Close Ad."

Also, start using the coffee pot with the orange handle.

There are too many ways (free even!) to get rid of pop-ups and other undesirables. I almost NEVER see a pop-up or unwanted flash ad anymore.

Some things that work nicely:

Stop using IE NOW. Firefox (free!) is an excellent browser and can be tweaked for better performance. It's not hacker-proof, but as of now it's much more secure than IE. Get it.

Get an additional ad blocker. I use AdBolish (not free, supposedly) and it works great. There are other ad blockers to suit your preferences that will work just as well.

Install Service Pack 2 if you're running Windows XP.

Run Ad-Aware (free!) and Spybot (free!) to remove spyware, malware, etc.

A registry cleaner is a must also. Regseeker is a good one (free!).

Hope this helps!

I'm gonna have to agree with Axe on this one. Popups can be annoying, but at least they help keep awesome sites like this one free.

Take away annoying ads and people's favorite movies, shows, DVDs, video games, sports, and porn would not exist. It is what drives stuff, a crappy part of life. Anyone who reads this site and blocks ads out of laziness and ignorance can go fuck off. That goes from trolls to casual readers to movie executives.

Nick, you seem to be losing perspective on this issue. I realize the ads mean money to you, but you have to listen to people sometimes without just telling them to fuck off immediately. I understand why the ads are here, and I understand they are a necessary evil, but it's not cool to tell people to 'shut up and like it' more or less. You ask for feedback, and when it comes in the form of people complaining about ads or explaining how to block them, you tell them to fuck off?

What these threads that pop up once a week or so should be telling you is that people love CHUD, and want it to be there for them, but there are certain ads and types of ads that cross the line into being a distraction that people don't want to deal with and don't have to deal with on other sites. Not other movie sites, just other sites period. I don't care about a pop up ad here or there, and if it's something I'm interested in, I'll click on it. But it's insulting to a reader's intelligence to hit him/her with the SAME AD on every new page that loads. That's not YOUR fault, but it's still something you should consider. If there was a different pop up ad on every page, that might be one thing, or if you could click the ad and say "thanks, I'm going to see Hitchhiker's Guide already" and have it stop popping up, that might work. You can't make the analogy to tv because tv doesn't flash you the same exact ad 15 times in a row. That, honestly, is annoying.

I don't understand why this thread was moved either. The CHUD.com main board says it's for discussion of CHUD. If there isn't a reasonable place to voice complaints, make one, but the Chewer column description doesn't fit this thread.

It's a free site. Until you start paying dues what you say about ads means diddly squat.

That's the most assanine point of view ever.

Number 1, there are no dues to be paid. If there were, I for one would consider it, can't speak for anyone else. What would it cost to get an ad-free Chud per person? It's something that's been brought up and shot down many times, so if that's not an option, it's not fair to use it as the argument.

Number 2, people flying off the handle yelling at Nick and co. about ads is one thing, and that's un-called for. There are enough threads about this, find one, add to it in a reasonable manner, and be done. But, user feedback is part of the game. It's sometimes not fun to hear negative feedback, but when it's reasonable, and it's honest, there's no reason to tell people 'you don't matter, your opinion doesn't matter, fuck off'. A site without users generates no ad revenue, period. It's always a good business practice to listen to your customers, and we, the readers, are CHUD's customers. You don't have to take it in the ass every time someone has a complaint, but you should at least listen and be open to the idea that sometimes, some of the readers have a point.

Nope, fuck it. There are enough threads about it. Want to discuss it, email me a Leak Letter about it. Otherwise, live with it. Or find a site with our quality that doesn't have ads. Oh, wait...

Nick has also repeatedly said he doesn't control the ad content.

Plus, it's approx. 2 seconds of your life to click it and move on.

So, please move on to more important issues like feeding tubes and where I can get one.

Compared to other similar sites, CHUD's ad count isn't that bad. I've seen places that look like a NASCAR racer.

Maybe he can't control the ad content, but what about the ad content provider? Gorilla Nation doesn't exactly have a stellar repuation. I think there are better solutions out there. When I go to Hardocp.com, I see computer hardware ads. When I go to TheOneRing.net, I see ads for LOTR related merchandise. Same for TheForce.Net. It's almost all Star Wars related ads there. Here I see a lot of pap that I am quite sure most chewers aren't interested in.

The Hitchhiker's ad is especially cool. Devin has been reporting on the site on the main page, but I click on the ad instead. Takes you to the site where you can view the characters or watch the trailer or any of those other consumer-friendly things these kinds of sites do.

Wait, so pop-up blockers impact site revenue? This is a serious question. I don't know how it works, and I'm not ripping on the ads, but I want to understand the comment earlier regarding blockers. I thought it was OK to block.

Neal
04-01-2005, 12:26 PM
Yes, some of the movie stuff is obviously relevant, like Hitchhiker's and Sin City, but then there are some real crap movies that are advertised here, that our hosts freely rip into on the main page, and yet we're bombarded by the ads for them.

I'm all for you making this your full-time gig, Nick. And if you need pop-up's to make that happen, then bully for you. No matter how fucking stupid they are. But telling off the readers that complain about it is shortsighted.

Listening to people's complaints, no matter how inane you think they are, is one of the differences between a busines that commands the attention of several hundred hard-core devotees, and one that reaches a larger, broader audience.

(cue snarky remarks on how Chud is for the "Real" movie fans, not those stupid AICN assholes, whom the board membership is growing to resemble more and more everyday).

You're saying he can't leave Gorilla Nation? Or that he can't choose which ads to run? I know he probably can't pick and choose the actual advertisements, but there are service providers besides GN that offer better ad content across the board, from what I've witnessed. If GN is somehow tied to Nexcess.net, like part of a package, then I can see how his hands are tied. But if Nick can get away from GN I encourage him to do so.

What I'm saying is you can't just go out and have Pepsi and McDonald's pour money into your till for the privilige of advertising on your site. You have to go out and sell your site to advertisers who can and will pay you to be on your site.
Herb Tarlac told me so.

I don't have any such problems, but there is one issue with Firefox, and I'm curious to see if anyone else experiences this.

Some pages - and this is completely at random - load, but won't let me scroll or click around in them. The Firefox status bar always reads either: kt4.kliptracker.com or gfx.dvlabs.com. Those two adstreams seem to be a bit screwy for me.

Anybody else?

I have occasional problems with Mozilla. Not very often, though.

I don't really mind the ads. They're a nuisance, but no more than commercials on TV, or ads in a magazine or comic book.

Sometimes, I like to pretend that the Amityville ad is a horde of demon flies. When they appear on my screen, I go "Oh no! The flies are back!" and then I click close and say "Whew, that was TOO close!"

Hum ... I have 1.0.2 , but I don't think that's one of the fixes in that update.

I also have adblock (http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/extensions/adblock/adblock-0.5.2.039-fx.xpi) , so maybe that's why I'm not seeing this problem.

Jesus Fucking Chirst, that happens all the time in every media.
How many times have you read a review in which the Newspaper's film critic blasts a film, and two pages later there is a Huge Ad for The same film?

My local paper is solidly Democratic in it's editorial policy, but it accepts ads from Republican Candidates every single election.
Just the other day I watched a couple of activists on CNN Blast Fast Food for being unhealthy, and during the ad break a commerical for McDonald's ran.
Entertainment magazines print ads for film that their reviewer blasts all the time.
If you run a newspaper , TV Station, magazine, or website, you accept advertising from products whether you personallly endorse them or not. The line might be drawn for reasons of taste...you might not want to advertise Porn if your newspaper is aimed on a general audience because it would be more trouble from people with young kids then the ad is worth..but not because you do not like or do not agree with a product or viewpoint.
Some fans seem not to live in the real world much.
I find the popups annoyning, but if it helps Nick to keep the site up I can accept it.

I dont mind chud.com having popups but at least make them so they dont appear in the middle of the screen. I mean Ill go to a topic then go back and it pops up again. The ad with the Bee's was the worst...

See right now an ad for hitchhikers is on top..... I dont mind that at all!!!

Whoa, talk about a can of worms (one each)...

It's pretty simple. If you don't want to deal with pop-ups and other internet nuisances, it's relatively easy to squelch them. That's your right because it's YOUR computer, not CHUD's. Pop-ups, spyware, malware, etc. are unwanted code in my box and I do my best to keep them out. It doesn't always work, but it's my right to try to maintain my computer as I see fit. And yes, I'm anal about it.

It's certainly NOT my right to demand that CHUD remove the ads. It's their site and that's a business decision they're entitled to make. Whether or not it's a good one depends on the cash flow, I guess. Getting upset because some users choose not to participate in the marketing is little bizarre, however. Surely that has been figured into the business model. Right?

I don't know what the happy medium is. Obviously a lot of users aren't bothered by clicking through ads, so maybe overall the system works.

Moltisanti

I would never rip on the type of movies or products that are advertised on CHUD. Whatever company wants to contribute money to this site is fine by me. I think the problem many have, myself included is the way in which the ads are presented. The fuckin' bees flying around everytime I click on a thread have insured that I will never pay money to see that film (though I probably wouldn't have anyway). It's just like ads that move on the bottom of the screen during televsion shows, remember when "The Simpsons" parodied such spots?

As bad as some commercials on television are, I rarely find that they get in the way of my enjoyment of a show. There are tons of ads in Sports Illustrated and Entertainment Weekly but they don't get in the way of my enjoyment of those magazines. A lot of the ads here are detracting from my ability to have a good time reading articles or others' opinions on this site, that is not good at all.

A few weeks ago there were a bunch of jokers starting threads with titles like "Get a free PS2" or "Get a free Plasma TV." Those threads were rightly mocked and discarded. Yet look at the top of this site most of the time. "Destroy the Alien, Get a free Playstation 2!" It's like the inmates are running the assylum.

I will probably visit CHUD as long as its around, but this blind loyalty to whatever goes on is for the birds.

I'm not gonna bitch, because whoever runs the site has to pay for its existence, I doubt anyone is making a living off the thing, so might as well not have it cost Nick dearly to pay for our chud addiction. I will offer this little anecdote; Last night as I as cruising the site, the amityville bees ad was popping up so regularly I started to not even notice it. At one point, however, my attention was grabbed, since the ad seemed to have changed, when out of the swarm of bees, a spider started crawling around the screen. My interest turned to terror when the spider crawled to the edge, and onto my keyboard, making me realize that it wasnt part of the ad, and in fact a bastard little spider, sent to make me shriek like a 4 year old girl. I've heard of intrusive ads, but damn, they seem to be getting eerily sophisticated....

I used to have this problem sometimes. I got adblock and a lot of it went away. You might want to get adblock and enable it for those two if you can. It helped me in blocking the ones that actually pop up and leaving the ads at the top and bottom if I choose to. I could be wrong, but it might be a solution.

I'll admit to grumbling about pop-ups whenever I see them but at least most of the ones we get here are easy to dispose of with a single click. The only that really bugged me recently was the Lord of the Rings one that I could never find the close button for, but that may have just been my problem.

On the whole Chud is easily accessible & a damn good place to be. I can understand Nick getting annoyed at constant complaints because really we get good service for fuck all !
