I just watched the original “Night Of The Living Dead” and “Carnival of Souls” back to back and I’m convinced that “Carnival” is a better film. It has incredible mood and atmosphere, almost as though it was invoking Val Lewton, and considering that it’s budget was about a third of “Night’s” I think that it is the more accomplished of the two!
Sure, I’m a GIGANTIC fan of the Zombie Genre in any form (literature, movies, video games etc, etc…) and Romero’s film was ground breaking for a number of reasons such as having a black man be the central protagonist, the gore, and the devastatingly nihilistic ending but watching “Night” is like reading a Stephen King novel (obvious, filled with caricatures, pushes your face in a mound of gore, not that I’m complaining!) whereas “Carnival” feels more like H.P. Lovecraft (metaphysical, a greater sense of nightmarish cosmic horror although a bit repetitive!) who is my FAVORITE horror writer by the way!
