does anyone know about windigos?
Ok, I think I saw one when I was a kid. I was walking home from church, around 12:30 PM. It was sunny but foggy...A weird combination. Well, to get to my house, I had to cut through the parkway, which is a long cement path surrounded by forest. I was about to go up the path to my house, when something caught my eye down the parkway, about maybe 150 yards down. I stopped and looked at what appeared to be a ghost, or an alien, or something. What it looked like was a tree/octopus, with tentacles or arms. Branches? It looked like it was floating in the middle of the road/parkway. The parkway is about 10 feet wide, and a mile and a half long. It was just sitting there waving the arms up and down rythmically...fog was covering the road all the way up. Maybe the special foggy condition brought it out? Well, I wasn't that scared but I was amazed by it. I sat there for a good 3 minutes just looking at it, so I know I wasn't seeing things. When I started to walk toward it...It just disappeared...like it vanished. I totally didn't know how it left. Then I was wondering whether I was just seeing things. It reminded me of the pictures i used to see of giant squid, but yet it looked like a tree.

Well, one of my neighbors told my buddie that she has seen weird creatures down there, in the tree tops with long tentacles jumping from tree to tree.... the problem is, most people think she is nuts. But now I wonder if i saw what she saw. She said the indians there used to talk about these creatures too. I think it was a wendigo, since after seeing that stupid movie, the definition is somewhat clearer to me...although i'm sure the movie is missing alot. What do you people think? Have Anyone else known anyone that has seen this? Oh, I lived near Harrisburg, Pa at the time.

I don't think it was a wendigo, though I don't discount that it may have been some supernatural creature. AFAIK wendigos are evil motherfuckers and if it really had been a wendigo it'd have killed or cursed you and not just peacefully departed.

well, I'm pretty sure i wasn't cursed.... My life has been good soo far...that was when I was like 15...I'm 28 now. I know that this is hard to believe...hell, I'm not sure i believe it. But i did see something...And I know i didn't just remember it wrong...(like remembering a dream) because I wrote about it in a journal I was keeping at the time. I wrote it as soon as I got home.

If The Hulk wasn't attacked by Wolverine in the near vicinity ... it wasn't Wendigo! Ahhhh, I'm sorry ... I had to say that.

Those kinds of stories freak me out though! I love 'em. Thanks for sharing, ben3man.

Tentacles, you say? I sense a hentai joke somewhere in the future.

This is not about a wendigo but it reminded me of something that happened to me when I was about 11 that I thought I would share. My house was on the corner in the city, and there was a drain pipe located right at the corner of the house that ran down to a creek. One evening about dusk, two friends and I were sitting on the porch of the house above mine(this house sat on a hill and looked directly down at my house.) I don't know which one spotted it first but a dark shadowy man shaped thing came out of the drain, walked half way across the street and completely vanished. Needless to say we all freaked out and ran home. The next day when the sun was nice and bright the three of us went to investigate and there were very large muddy foot prints coming from the drain pipe that went half way across the street and just stopped. The three of us all saw the same thing. That was 20 years ago. Not so long ago I ran into one of the friends I was with that night, and she asked me if I remembered the night we saw the thing come out of the drain.

Wendigo is the term certain Northwestern Indian tribes used for someone that ate another person. The theory was that once you did it, you'd go batshit crazy and be forever cursed with the insatiable hunger for human flesh. The more you ate, the more you wanted. There was no cure, and you'd always end up dying in some horrible way. No physical change would occur, but a Wendigo did exude an aura of malignance and evil that would be apparent to anyone nearby.

Don't know what you saw, but it wasn't a Wendigo. I think the proper term would be manitou.

is there any website dealing with this -- Manitou? --- I can only find ones about forklifts, and some national park. And if you've seen that movie called 'Wendigo' -- you'd see where I associated what i saw with a Wendigo --- I don't know how accurate the movie is or anything .... but it's based on an indian spirit of some sort. Plus I think in " pet semetary" --- the book, they mention a wendigo, way deep in the forest.

ok, I just went to the wendigo movie site....and they have a little animated short thingy....anyway, in one of the pictures, there is a sign that says....welcome to Manitou valley. I think they are saying a Manitou is a wendigo....or something like that.... at least that is how i have made an association with it.

2 decent writings on the lore of the wendigo...

now that I read a little, I wonder now that it must have been something else....a ghost perhaps? Cause some woods in the suburbs of Pa doesn't sound like the right habitat.

I'd rather come face to face with an evil wendigo that attacks me then to have to sit through the movie named after it.

That was TWO HOURS I'LL NEVER GET BACK.
