I took it for a ride this weekend. It's a great camera...

I used the 24-fps progressive mode while shooting a friend's band... in a basement lit only with a single low watt light bulb. The result: gorgeosity.

I also did some shooting outdoors in normal 30fps interlaced... we're working on a baseball movie... and the picture was just as good (although 24 is the magic number)... I'd say the picture is much much better than the XL-1S.

If anyone's thinking about buying or renting a DV camera, I'd highly recommend this one.

Will keep it in mind.

Thanks for chiming in on it though.

You're welcome CT. I felt that input on different cameras might help to get a pragmatic ball rolling in this forum, with regard to any up and coming filmmakers that are curious what a specific dv cam will give their production...

After looking at the tape, the Panasonic is less warm than the XL1S... the image is slightly metallic (similar to what was chic in saturation during the color movies of the 60s)... there's a little softness to the XL1S, and I guess it's a matter of taste in the end. (Is the camera's lens or its chips responsible for its finished look? In film, it's always the lens and film stock, but in video, it seems the camera's makeup determines the look)

The Panasonic is a grittier, dirtier camera. The XL1 is pretty faithful to the modern film look, the bloated mid-90s feel that tends to be a little surreal.

Myself I look for the more cinematic look but not neccessarily film look.

I have a couple projects I am looking forward to but there is a lot of money still to be put in. In fact after reading the lastest DV magazine I realize I have a lot of equipment to try out and see what works.
