I truly envy Mr. Whitehead's mastery of the English language. Working with a minimal word count, he created prose that was tight, beautiful, and flowed gracefully. I really see big things with Henry Tasker. I love how he's introduced -- like how much he is that archetypal hero. The title itself, "The Calling," points to the "Hero's Journey." But it's one with a twist as Henry is, well, not physically alive. That's really awesome.

Dan, promise to write more about him! Lumiere needs a hero, and I think we got him. :)

as I mentioned in the other thread, Tasker and Abigor should face off against Johnny and Mr. Happy at least once. Not as any deciding battle or anything, but definetly in a hero vs. villin meeting maybe. I assume they are in the same timeframe, given Tasker being old now, but having served in Vietnam, which would put him in our timeperiod.

I would love to work with him on this.

Don't be too sure that this guy is a hero wink . He seems awfully unsure that the work he is doing is "good", remember. Not sure how I'd be able to work in a meeting with Johnny and his shiny friend though. I've got big plans mapped out for Henry - and his entire family's history with the mysterious Abigor.

Also, Henry ain't dead. Put it this way, I'm using the term "angel" as a description of his species - not his nature.

Trivia fans may also like to note that "The Calling" ties in with Poxy's "Let Him Dangle" - Henry is the great-grandson of the guy dancing at the end of the rope in the inaugural Lumiere story, for reasons that will become horribly clear...

The introduction of McGinty's Bar in "Last Call" fills a very handy story hole as well, so there'll be a small crossover there.

I thought there may have been a connection, and I'm a Dumb American! Hooray for me!

Man, these Lumiere stories are great stuff, kids. Keep up the good work!

I read your story so many times and I still don't know why I ended up thinking Henry was dead.

Anyway, you're one sneaky bastard. I did reread it much closely and realized that I should always do that, you subtle SOB.

“We do good work, don’t we?” asked Henry, cautiously.

I knew something was amiss here.

Also, I totally missed that Tasker reference. I can't believe it. Let me join trippingbillie: "Yeee-ha!" :D

Dan...allow me to scream out all over town that YOU ARE THE FUCKING MAN! You have inspired me to right my first Lumiere. I knew Star Wars authors could be good writers! :D

Nope, not long. I already had it in mind, but never wrote it down. I had time so I decided to write it.
