Distressing News - Update

My wife just got back from our son's nine month check up. Since his six month check up he's gained less than two ounces and hasn't grown significantly. His motor skills are also not what they should be (i.e. he's not sitting up or crawling). Mentally and emotionally he seems on track (he laughs and plays) and he eats like a champ so we don't know what it is. The docs are doing blood and urine tests to see what's up but it will probably be a week before we hear anything. They say it could be nothing serious but I almost feel like they're reading from some sort of script when they say stuff like that. Your thoughts, prayers, and well wishes are appreciated.

That has the be scariest news. I can imagine how you must be feeling. However, he is developing (laughing and playing and eating) so try not to sweat it too much unless you get confirmation of something to worry about. It may be nothing.

Dillon was supporting himself and sitting up from only a few months old, but he made absolutely no effort to move himself or crawl until he was 8 months old. And then he went from small movements to zooming all over the floor and standing up within a matter of weeks.

I'm sure you know this, but it's worth hearing it again - there's no set timetable to these things. He might just be saving his energy for a massive development spurt. At this age, it can all change so quickly, I'd try not to worry until there's something definite to worry about.

My rector's older daughter (who is now 3) didn't walk until after she turned 2 and I believe the only other thing wrong with her is that she is allergic to peanuts in any form and she was normal in every other respect. In fact, she's larger than most 3-year-olds. And I just found out this past Sunday that she is terribly frightened of this older gentleman in town who makes the Donald Duck sound every time her sees her (he doesn't know any better as he is senile.)

And I have a 6-year-old cousin named Lanier who had some motor skill problems and learning deficiencies and it was eventually discovered that she was born with more mercury in her blood than normal (it was originally thought to be some form of autism.) We see Lanier and her family every 4th of July and when we saw her in 2001, she hadn't changed much since the years before. Her mom had been working with her to help her walk, talk, etc. But, the condition was appropriately diagnosed between the summers of 2001 and 2002, so when we saw her last summer, she was much more responsive and interactive with everyone. They had her on a very special diet. She had to have a special kind of bread and no dairy, but the results were amazing.

Good luck with whatever the doctors tell you and here's hoping nothing is wrong. My prayers are with you and your family.

This can be a new parents worst nightmare. With our first child arriving in late September, this hits me hard...
My sister recently took her 2 year old in for a check-up and the Doctor thought she saw a tongue quiver associated with neurological problems. He doesn't really talk much, although his recognition and comprehension skills are fabulous, so the Pediatrician got my sister all worried about his development. Tests were booked, and wouldn't you know it - he started talking non-stop 2 days after the appointment. You can't get him to shut up.
So, I think the point is definitely that they do things in their own time.

My niece did almost exactly the same thing, Scott. She didn't gain much between 6-8 months, but she was mentally and physically active. After that time though, she shot up. Now a few months away from 4 years old, she's kicking everyone's ass in school...

My brother went through something similar a few years ago with his own child (IIRC, the kid actually lost half a pound in weight over a two-month period!).

Today he's the human equivalent of Jabba the Hutt (minus the money and foxy slave-girls).

Just stay cool for the moment; I'm sure everything will work out.

Redundant to observe this I see, but I will anyway, that there are no hard and fast rules on these things. Every family I know that has more than two kids will tell you that one lagged worryingly or ran ahead in a scary burnout type way. They all got to the same place in the end.

They're just checking. If it is something, then the sooner they catch it the more minimal fuss involved in fixing it.

My nephew was born two-months early, well, he came out one month early, but my sister was forced to stay in bed the previous month.

It was tricky there for awhile. Everyone thought he was going to be born retarded or with some other mental problems.

Hell, when he was 6 months old some relatives thought he might be deaf because he didnt react to noise properly.

He was a slow-learner is all. He didn't talk till he was almost 4, was a small baby, hardly ate at all.

The boy is now 15 and despite his parents screwing him up for life, he's doing fine.

Don't sweat the small stuff.

I remember my best mate when he and his missus had Dana, they were worried out of their heads because she took what they felt like an age to just crawl.
And after they took her to the Docs she reassured them that (like many have said here) all kids develope at different rates.
I can understand your concern pal but hang on in there, your ickle'un will be scaling the dizzy heights of your bookcases and hiding your car keys in time. :D

Well the blood tests came out clear (not like Crystal Pepsi clear but like healthy), so that's a relief. The doctor says we'll just wait and see about his future growth patterns, he has a checkup in six more weeks. She does want him to do a couple of physical/play therapy sessions with a specialist to jumpstart his sitting up and crawling. Physical therapist for babies, how cool of a job would that be?

I weighted a lithe 5 lbs, 8 oz when I was born, and my folks were really worried that I would be a sickly kid growning up. Little did they know what a steady diet of Ring Dings and Cheetos will do to a kid...
