The Big Lebowski ROCKED!!! I mean, it was a Coen Bros. movie and all, and it never really went anywhere, but it was EXCELLENT...not so much when I watched it, but when I saw Paul Newman's superb detective film "Harper" (1966) just last week. Lebowski, loosely, is a rip-off of Harper, in the sense that the blackmail and kidnapping scheme are exactly the same, as are the drop points for the money and a whole bunch of the rest of it. Besides, who can top John Turturro's two great performances of that year? Jesus in the Big L and whatever his name was as the Jewish refugee in the better-than-Schindler's List The Truce.

This was the biggest disappointment since finding out there wasn't a Santa Claus. Ugh. The Hudsucker Proxy is one of my favourite films.
This one was so bad I wanted to charge them for time lost.
Can you sue a director for making a bad film? The Arrival 2 was better than this.

The Big Lebowski is a hard film to enjoy the first time, but I watch it over and over and it gets funnier each time. It'll grow on you in a big way. Now among my top three and most quotable comedies EVER.

This movie is a masterpiece. If you have not see it, rent it. Or better, buy it! Definately on par (if not better) than Fargo, but much funnier.

Why do you think I drink white russians? Cause I am...the dude. But you can call me, Sir Dude, uh, El Dudarino, if that's you thing...

But, he calls it a "Caucasian" which I find ultra hilarious.

Speaking of, and you UK and beyond folks can help on this:
I used to buy a drink called SHERIDAN's. The bottle was great, one side had a Kahlua type liquor and one had a cream like liquor. You pour the bottle and both mix together and make a drink that'll top any Caucasian.
I can't find it anymore!

Well, then ... we know where Ms. Kidman will be on July 3rd! Way to go, Nick ... (as long as you can find some Sheridan, that is.)

Andy Warhol's Sleep was more interesting than Fargo. This may have been the point of the film, actually.

Nick is right.
The first time I watched the movie I honestly did not care for it. Then I watched it again and now I can not get enough. Same with Boogie Nights, just gets better everytime.
That's what you get for fucking a total stranger in the ass.

My god that was a GREAT movie. I think it highlighted John Goodman as a valuable commodity more than any of his recent work. And it was right at the time when he turned out a handful of things at once (Fallen, etc.)
That was a John Goodman movie, with cast. A funny as Hell, creative piece of cinema. See it again, see it now.
Thank you.

Shut the fuck up, Donny! You're out of your element!
The whole nature venue scene with his landlord is still my favorite scene.

Soon to BE a CHUD topic.
I was glancing at old threads and came across this one which was started in 2000, two years after The Big Lebowski came out. It's now 2002 and what strikes me as interesting is the ever growing love that so many people have for this flick. I go to parties and inevitibly at some point people will end up gathered around the TV watching Lebowski and quoting lines. What is it about this film that keeps people coming back for more?
I love that you threw a Big Lebowski party, Nick. It was pure genius.

I could do a thesis on what makes this film great, but I'm lazy so....
It's one of the funnest movies ever and there is a lot more going on then meets the naked eye.

Apparently both Walter and The Dude are based on real friends of the Coens. Walter is John Milius, director of Conan and co-writer of Apocalypse Now. Lebowski is some famous producer whose name I can't recall.

I personally adore this movie. Diva, I think part of the appeal is that we all secretly hero-worship the Dude. Except for me, because I openly hero-worship the Dude.
The Coens just have a knack for making movies that instantly adhere to some people, and grow on almost everyone else. That's why it's popularity grows.
The Big Lebowski rules. If I had to define why it's so great, for me, it's because the characters are so recognizable but at the same time unique. Plus, it's funny.
One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that the title and roughly the storyline are an homage to the great Howard Hawks flick The Big Sleep.

The first showing was hard to sit through, and it's all Walter's fault. Once I knew he was a bonehead and how boneheaded he would become, my jaw unclenched and I could enjoy this for what it is.
And what it is, is brilliant. The marmot in the tub was particularly choice.

Greatest comedy ever. Back in high school we would sat around in class and recast the movie with our teachers. Sadly enough, it worked just as well.
I can't imagine anybody else playing that role other than Jeff Bridges.

Yeah, the Dude is a guy I wish I could achieve the lifestyle of - a lifestyle best illustrated by the scene where he'd driving down the street smokin' a J and drinking a beer.
I thought that the real joke of the film was that despite all the proclamations of heroism on the Dude's part, everything is basically back at the starting point for him at the end of the movie, minus Buscemi.
And can you go wrong with Sam Elliot?
"I like you're style, Dude, but do you have to curse so much?"
"What the fuck are you talking about?"
"Okay, Dude, have it your way."
