View Full Version : * Future CHUD RPGs

I have been thinking about new genres for RPing in this forum. Yes, I realize we have two fully-formed motherfuckers in various stages of activity already.
I found myself profoundly inspired to RP this weekend, and was curious as to what RP Forum regulars would want to branch out and do next (down the road a bit, perhaps)?
We have already: Endured a failed fantasy campaign, Completed one full Mafia Campaign, started a Mafia sequel, and started a Star Wars campaign.
I am, as of this moment, partial to the following categories (some of which can overlap):
* Martial Arts Action (Shadowfist/Feng Shui style)
* Investigative/Mystery
* Norse/Viking Ragnarok Epic
* General Time Travel
Anyone interested in these ideas? You kids got other suggestions? It is all just talk. Idle talk. Idle, excitable, frenzied talk.

A Western would kick ass.

Survival Horror also has some potential (a la All Flesh Must Be Eaten).
General Logan

Perhaps. But I would need some kind of non-Western element thrown in. Vampires. Gadgets. The British.
You know, shit like that.

Survival horror would be fun too. A few extra rules might be necessary to make sure the players stay "mortal". Good stuff man.

Ok, how about this: survival horror Western? The possibilities are endless.

AS some of you know I am intersted in running a CHUD RPG (may do CS3 if interest is there after 2 runs it's course). I also enjoy playing in these little gems. I think an intersting challenge would be a Super Hero flavored RP a la Champions. That's where my nick comes from. A western would be cool though I disagree with Logan that any extra "flavoring" would be necessary. It could be interesting however.

All of a sudden, I am very interested in doing a horror western RPG. Why'd you have to bring this up at a time like this, Logan!
General Logan
02-24-2003, 03:52 PM
Well, this forum has had some tumbleweeds blowing through in the last week or two, and I am a diehard, must-RP-to-live kinda guy.
Both current GMs are getting real life things in order right now, as well they should be. Just want to keep some spark in the forum. No ill will intended or thunder stolen.
Scott, you are right. A straight western RP sure would be fun. As a player, I would gladly take part. But as a GM, I would just want a slightly diffferent genre-angle to tell the story from.
Again, not meaning to shoot down any ideas. That would be against the purpose of the thread. Continue discussion!

Yeah especially when both of our current games are (for VERY good reasons) moving slowly at present. Although in my real life gaming experience the best groups always had more ideas than time to play them all. So that's a good sign I think. In my group in college everyone GM'd at some point and the hard core guys routinely juggled 2 or 3 games in different systems. Of course we played something almost every day. I wonder how I made it out of school at all.

Cyberpunk
I know it's an obsolete concept, but so what.

I didn't notice it in one of Roche's above posts until after it came to mind, but he did indeed mention it as well.
Poll:
Would those of you who frequent this forum at least once a day for in character posting be up for a Superhero campaign?
This is as serious vote, for all oldies or dedicated newcomers who will not sign up and then flake out.

This is extremely coincidental that this topic popped up today, since Rath and I were discussing this very thing last night in chat.
I've been thinking about something in the survival horror realm, something with lots of zombies, ala 28 Days Later style*. Multiple groups of players who have to eventually get together to help each other out...much flesh would be consumed.
A Western would be cool. Time travel would get complicated unless the science behind it was explained well enough....none of this "The One" crap.
I've also thought about a true to life, Law & Order style crime investigation. It would have to limit the number of players though, since there's only so many lawyers or detectives that work a case. It could even jump into the old who-dun-it realm involving a bunch of people...think Clue.
Just throwing my rag into the fire.

* - Yes, I understand that 28 Days Later doesn't necessarily have to do with "zombies" per se.

I could be in for that hero thing.

I am all about the superhero thing.
I have a poll too, though, because I would actually be up for this.
Would anyone be interested in a horror western campaign? (like survival horror in a western setting)

What was the question? :D
Superhero... yes

I have been toying with the idea of running one of four campaigns here, just because I love all of you and want to get back into gaming requiring human interaction:
1. All things being equal... (a Changeling: The Dreaming campaign)
The gates to Arcadia, the original paradise, are closed. Only the world of humanity remains. Without any awareness of our true nature, humankind crushes us beneath its banal heel. Joy and laughter are gone; only the Dreaming remains.
We are changelings, the forgotten ones, neither fully fae nor wholly mortal. The last of our kind on Earth, we have built ourselves an invisible kingdom. We are everywhere, yet you have never seen us. We hide, not behind some fragile Masquerade, but in plain sight, with the power of our Glamour. We exist within a real world of make-believe where "imaginary" things can kill, and "pretend" monsters are real.
For a complete overview of the game this campaign is based on:
http://www.white-wolf.com/changeling.html
In my 15-adventure campaign, we switched from role-playing to live-action role-playing pretty freely in and out of every adventure we ran. An excellent, if challenging, exercise in imagination.
2. My fantasy RPG world: Celador
You live on a world that was sealed off from the rest of the universe eons ago by it's God. Large, impossibly dangerous oceans seperate the 4 main continents from one another, and travel between the lands on this world is impossible. But an ancient Dwarven explorer may have found the key to reaching the other lands of Celador, if only your PCs could find him...
I ran this campaign for three years, and it is quite well developed with some very non-standard playing options for those of you familiar with D&D.
This is one I would host at my website, as the background info is, err, quite large.
3. In-Nomine - Down and out in Beverly Hills...
Your PCs play the role of Angels that have been forsaken on Earth to fight in The Great War for sins committed in Heaven. Always, the war has been fought and always, the balance between Good and Evil on Earth has been maintained. But the prophesized birth of an Earth-bound Daemon has set wheels in motion that may spell the end of Reality on Earth as you know it. Will your PCs continue to fight for God despite your abandonment on Earth, or will you Turn?
Based loosely on Steve Jackson's In Nomine game (but more on my own writing and free-form campaign), this campaign is ideal for those who want a more powerful RPG experience.
4. Veil
What if all around you people and creatures from other worlds and times walked freely, living and working here on Earth? What if not only were we not alone in the universe, but certain people have known this for millenia? What if you were part of an organization thousands of years old dedicated to maintaining peace on Earth between all of these beings and furthering Earth's interests in the Multiverse? What if that job resulted more times than not in being vapourized by cosmic storms, stranded 10,000 years in the future, or complete and utter distruction at the hands of enemies too numerous to count? Welcome to your first day on the job and the rest of your soon-to-be-short life...
Tell me which one you want run and I will do it. I can only do one at a time but over the course of the year I could do many.

I would be ALL about In Nomine.

Superhero idea is gold.
Django
02-24-2003, 07:13 PM
I almost signed on to both of the current ones.
But a Western, Survival Horror, or Post-Apocalyptic Cyber-punk would rock my house.
Course I could shit kick some angels and demons anyday too...
Django
02-24-2003, 07:14 PM
And I'm so in the next Star Wars one.
Especially after I found my Dark Side and Spec-force sourcebooks from college...

I'm up for just about anything. To me the angel thing or the faerie thing sounds good though. ANd of course the Western and the hero thing.
Blunt
02-24-2003, 08:24 PM
Count me in for just about everything as well. Though, given that my recent viewings consisted mainly of asian films, I'd be pumped for Samurai/kung-fu epic of any sort (we could even include Chinese horror elements in there, such as the hopping vampires).
Rath/Brendan
02-24-2003, 08:39 PM
I'd be up for any of these, but In Nomine, Veil, and any western would rock my world.
I'm interested in how a superhero game would play out, too. Especially with the whole "powers" thing. Someone wanna break that down for me, please?
Ludwig
02-24-2003, 08:44 PM
The powers would all have to be defined clearly up front. Then the narrator would have to construct the story in such a way as to allow the use of powers to overcome challenges. In combat, the narrator would pretty much have to just describe how your character uses your powers, as it would be too hard to have a live blow-by-blow with sereval people all suped-up. But maybe not.
Devil Unicorn
02-24-2003, 10:31 PM
So, is anyone planning on taking up any of these? I'm seriously considering doing a horror Western campaign.
Ludwig
02-24-2003, 11:03 PM
Like I said, if there is enough interest in any one of the four I posted I will run it, or co-run it with someone.

An H.P. Lovecraft RPG!
Kid Ego
02-25-2003, 01:35 PM
I thought about Lovecraft, but I think it might be too hard to come up with a satisfying campaign where the characters actually don't go insane when the Elders come.
Devil Unicorn
02-25-2003, 04:30 PM
Yeah, I don't think that a Lovecraft campaign would be pulled off well in this format. In traditional form, sure, but you just can't convey the same creepiness that is necessary for a good campaign.

I have been shut out of work for the last two days by an "ice storm", and have just now gotten the home computer to cooperate.
I have opened a sign up thread for the modern day/Norse apocalypse campaign. Sign up, if ye will.

So that I may research to create the ultimate character...may I die honorably with the Frost Giants at Vigrid...

Kid, the best site on the 'net for mythology of any type is www.pantheon.org. Check it out, it's loaded with Norse mythology.

I really want to do a Visionaries RPG. Based on the 80's cartoon and toys...

I think anyone who has to use that link is disqualified from playing.
"Sheathe these feet in the driving gale, make swift these lges, o'er land I sail!"
"By nature's hand, by craft, by art, what once was one, now fly apart!"
Those are things I find myself saying out of the blue to this damn day.
Kid Ego
03-02-2003, 02:06 AM
ME TOO!!! Goddamn I loved that show...and the toys. I think we could do a seriously cool RPG of that.
