Gotta be Brute Force. Not "the next Halo". I think its a better 1 player game. Multiplayer just doesn't work for me.

I agree. What a dissapointment. Especially with the amount of money they spent trying to make a great game. They should have hired the very best game designers.

There is no question about it: Daikatana.

I'm going with Enter the Matrix. The only thing that made that game a challenge was the fucked up control set up.
Brute force no good, huh? Damn.

Final Fantasy for me. Come to think of it, the movie suffered from over-hype, too.

It felt like the TWO TOWERS video game was pretty hyped up. I still thought the game was really sweet, especially the unique opening, but I rented it and beat it in the FIRST day, what the hell kind of crap is that? The game was way too short. The overall idea was pretty similar to Enter the Matrix also.

You people DID see the old ads for Daikatana right?

State of Emergency..People hailed this thing as being better than GTA a few months before it came out. The everyone bought it and hated it because it was stupid, repetative, and boring.

Gruber is correct. Nothing even COMPARES to Daikatana.

Daikatana, with Messiah coming in a close second.

Daikatana, with Messiah coming in a close second.Yes, I almost forgot about Messiah but Daikatana definitely takes the cake. No console game can compare to these two.

No console game can compare to these two.For consoles, E.T. would have to be the closest. I don't remember how much it was hyped back in the days, but I do remember getting excited about playing it for the first time.
Daikatana takes the cake for games that were eventually released, but does Duke Nukem Forever count? How sad must it be to go to work everyday and be a part of that dev team?

I'm going with State of Emergency but only because I didn't actually buy Daikatana. It took all of 3 minutes of playing SoE before concluding I got fucked.

I must concur that State of Emergency was bafflingly rancid.

I didn't like KOTOR too. How about Star Wars : Tatooine City. Car jack land speeders(Cantina Music on the radio)swoop bikes, millenium falcons, tie fighters, bantas etc...Do missions for Jabba. Rack up kills with blasters, light sabers,.
I don't see why they don't go that route, they already tried to do a Twisted Metal clone with Star Wars demolition.

KOTOR is a great game. more entertaining than HALO, if that is possible. But that's not what we are here for. I would have to say the most overhyped console game is Enter The Matrix, which had such great potential. Bad controls, clippy graphics, and enough glitches to warrant the constuction of a new matrix. What makes it worse is that Reloaded wasn't even that good either.(although staking vamps is always good fun)
PC is Daikitana without a doubt. Look what happened to Romero, making a port of a 1.5 year old game for N-Gage(though I am looking forward to N-gage)

Others I can think of: Strike Commander, which threatened for like 2 years to be vaporware, Messiah as mentioned above, Enter the Matrix, also mentioned, and wasn't there supposed to be some big Privateer sequal that never made it? I read about it constantly and then nothing.

MGS2.
After one of the best games ever, for the playstation at least, the sequal looked even better. The almost cg graphics (at the time) stunned the crowd at E3 and make the cover of every magazine. Until the release date that's all people could think about, speculations abounded online and in print and it looked like a lock-in for game of the year.
And then it was released.
I enjoyed it, but it was no Metal Gear Solid, didn't even come close. Most everyone hated it. Of course, it probably couldn't possible live up to the hype but it was one of the most overhyped games.
Contenders:

Blasto

GTA3
GTA Vice City
Reason: Great idea. HUGE area to explore. However, that doesn't make a great game by itself. There was pretty much no story, bland charecters, and it didn't really ever seem to go anywhere.
Final Fantasy
Reason: Standing around getting your ass kicked while your waiting for your "turn" to retaliate never seemed like fun to me.
Tomb Raider
Reason: Bland, bland, bland. Platformers, as they are, should die as most recently showcased by Futurama.
Brute Force:
Not only NOTHING like Halo, there was really nothing special about it at all.
