Sony Cuts Price of PlayStation, PS2

By Ben Berkowitz
Reuters

LOS ANGELES (May 14) - Sony Corp said on Monday it cut the U.S. price of its PlayStation 2 game console by one-third and halved the price of its older PlayStation One, a preemptive move expected to touch off a round of discounting by rivals.

Effective immediately, the PS2 will cost $199 in the United States, down from $299, while the first-generation PSX will sell for $49, down from $99. Prices for accessories and extra controllers will also be reduced, Sony said in a statement.

Sony will also consider future price cuts on its game software, an executive said.

The cut comes as analysts, game publishers and retailers anticipate that Microsoft Corp will cut the price of its competing Xbox console, also currently $299, at the industry's Electronic Entertainment Expo, the major video game trade show, next week.

"It's not surprising that they want to get in front of Microsoft," said UBS Warburg analyst Mike Wallace. "Why else would Sony do it now?"

Sony said it was making the price cut now, as opposed to September as had been expected by some industry watchers, because it wanted to build momentum at the new discounted price well in advance of the year-end holiday season, the make-or-break period for video game sales.

"This way we can have some time so we can plan out the rest of the year with our retailers," Kaz Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, told Reuters.

At $199, the PS2 will be priced the same as Nintendo Co Ltd's GameCube, which does not have the DVD playback capabilities of the PS2 or as extensive a game library. The GameCube, like the Xbox, came out last November.

PS2 KEY TO SONY BOTTOM LINE

In early April, a senior Nintendo executive told Reuters the company would reconsider its GameCube pricing if Sony announced a price cut, especially to the $199 level.

Sony said last week it has sold more than 30 million PlayStation 2 units worldwide, giving it a more than 10-to-1 advantage over rival Microsoft in terms of installed game machines.

"We felt that, based on that great milestone, it was good for us and good for the platform to come up with a pricing announcement very close to that," Hirai said.

Sony earned an operating profit of 83 billion yen ($649 million) from its game division in the business year that ended in March, allowing it to post a net profit at a time when other consumer electronics makers were losing money because of the collapse in technology spending.

While the hardware is key for Sony, related software sales are just as important. The company publishes a number of games for its own console, which sell for up to $49.99.

Sony's Hirai said game software price may now be under consideration as well: "I think that as we move on the pricing for the hardware, I think we need to take an aggressive look at the software pricing too."

Another part of the PS2 strategy has been its expansion capabilities.

While the console does not have the built-in networking capabilities of the Xbox, Sony will release an adapter in August that will allow users to add online gameplay. Nintendo announced similar adapters for GameCube on Monday.

Sales of video game hardware, software and accessories topped $9 billion in the United States last year. Analysts and industry executives have said the industry is in the first year of a multi-year growth cycle driven by the three next-generation console

And here I was wondering what to do with my birthday money. I feel like Jake getting the spirit in The Blues Brothers.

Even though I already have a PS2 this is great news. For those of you about to jump on the PS2 ship, I suggest you wait for the rumored Xbox price drop because that system at $200 would be a complete steal.

OK since we all know a drop to $99 is in Gamecube's future - I believe The Big N said as much earlier this year if the others dropped - the question is:

Which one now and which one in December?

If the Cube does drop to $99 it would be hard to pass up. I, however, would still go with the Xbox now and wait until Christmas for the Cube as the pace of game releases is still rather slow.

In addition to Halo the Xbox has some potentially nice titles coming out soon such as Hunter, Morrowind, Buffy, and World Series Baseball.

A $100 Gamecube is impossible to pass up.

But I hope they do it soon, as I'm buying one at WHATEVER price the exact same day that Wrestlemania X-8 is released for it.

The Cube price cut is pretty much bullshit. From the good ol' IGN:

IGNcube: All right, and we're going to throw you a little curve ball here. With Sony and Microsoft dropping the prices of their consoles in the U.S. does Nintendo have any plan to continue to price GameCube as the better buy by dropping its price?

Beth Llewelyn: We have no plans to make any price drop announcements. We set this price to what we thought was a good mass-market price and we still feel that way.

IGNcube: Nintendo still feels this way even if GameCube doesn't include DVD functionality as the PS2 and Xbox do?

Beth Llewelyn: It goes back to our core philosophy that GameCube is a gaming machine. That's what we're about. I don't have any numbers, but my understanding is that most people out there are buying game systems to play games. I don't think that has become a huge selling point.

Nice words, but even though it is a great gaming machine it cannot compete with the Xbox at $199 and Sony is pretty much skimming the cream with all future hardware sales as the PS2 has done extremely well.

With all machines at $199 the clear winner is the Xbox in my opinion. That is a lot of system at that price.

Nintendo is a very proud company and will probably hold the line as long as possible, but remember that they dropped the cost of the Cube in Europe before it was even released.

I am a Cube fan but Nintendo will have to cut the price just to stay alive as the game library just isn't there and won't be until the holidays at the earliest.

And i think they will.

They have been pushing the release dates of title after title back since the systems inception, most recently Star Fox I believe.

I bought the system even though I was skeptical about the pace of release and extent of the future game library and they have done very little to change my mind.

i say they wont push back anymore because they've pushed about as far as they can. Normal nintendo timeline

Nintendo is filled with good people... but they're stubborn. They were stubborn to switch to CDs over cartridges (and damn them for that, because cartridges rule all), they were stubborn about having a DVD Player in their system (their policy makes sense and all, but they might sell more systems if the Cube had a player in it), and they'll be stubborn with this, I guarantee it. I'm sure they'll drop the price... just not ANY time soon.

X-Box does PAL->NTSC conversion on DVDs. So if you've wanted to pick up some of those kick ass Hong Kong legends discs, X-Box will do you good. If you wanted other European discs, they still need to be region free or region coded for your X-Box's territory of course. However, it's just a matter of time before the region coding is defeated. I believe an accessory to do just this has been released in Europe actually.

By the way, if they don't drop to at least $149 (better to be $99), then I think the Gamecube is going to get its ass beat. They only have a trickle of games coming out and Nintendo doesn't make enough 1st party games (not to mention that they aren't always that great). X-Box or PS2 are the way to go.

Whose bright idea was it to try to underprice frickin' Microsoft?
