Now, I haven't gotten the game yet, but I saw it in the mall today.....
.....WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING WITH THE FUCKING PACKAGING!!!!! The box is SMALL AS HELL!!! Did anyone see this? That pisses me off because I, like most PC gamers (or at least some) like to save boxes as momentos. The box for this game, the regular version of it, is as small as a DVD case. What gives? Is Lucasarts that cheap?
At least the tin is regular size, and it's only 10 dollars more.

Um, actually, I think they're trying to make that the new standard in PC game packaging, so you'd better get used to it.

Dear God I hope not, because it's a dreadful way of packaging.

That IS the new standard. Better get used to it.

I always thought those big boxes where just completly pointless. All it is is mostly cardboard.

Well, in the good 0l' days, we'd often get nice, thick gaming manuals, maps, keyboard overlays, you name it. Manuals for flight sims were especially large, often even spiral-bound. Nowadays we're lucky if we get any manual at all, much less one that actually HELPS with a game, or gives background info...

Hey I still have my map from Ultima Underworld and those nifty manuels that gave descriptions of the creatures and stuff.

I love the small box, it's great. And if you want a bigger one, Verbal, you could always pick up the special-edition tin for the game.

But God, the golden age of PC gaming is truly over if these are what the boxes will be like.

What's in the tin?
Michael Rabattino
03-30-2002, 12:20 PM
The tin, which is the collector's edition, contains Dark Forces, Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2, Jedi Knight 2, and a special JK2 keychain.
For $59.99. Not a bad deal.

Thanks for the info, might pick that up some day, sounds fun.

So I picked it up and....
It's great, not to much into the single player story thing, but I love the multiplayer games. Killing lots of people with a lightsaber is always fun.
Plus it came with the other two games that I now have to install, so that's more shit to keep me from doing what I am supposed to be doing.

Cool...i'll probably get it today or tomorrow.
I just hope I can run the game well. The minimum reqs aren't too steep, but my video card (Voodoo2) is ancient.
But I still ran and beat Max Payne on here, which had MUCH higher system reqs, so I think i'll be fine.

Finally got to play this after installing my new video card...
...it's SO SWEET. The game runs very smoothly and only slows down during large firefights. But the levels are huge and the game is just so damn fun to play.
Unfortunately, whilst installing my video card I must have screwed something up because now I can't go on the Internet. I'm on my sister's computer.
This sucks-- I get one thing working, another thing gets screwed up. I can't win.

So sad that i'm the last one since the other day to post on this thread. It's SUCH a damn good game.
For people who have it, where are you? I'm in Bespin.
Let me tell you, this is one of the top 5 hardest games i've ever played, hands down.

Yeah, Command and Conquer: Renegade has the exact same box size. More and more games are getting them now. Yeah, I bought the special edition, just for the nice tin it came in.

finished it. great stuff. there are definitely some difficult, frustrating "puzzles". but so many cool details. my fave is to use the force push to knock stormtroopers and officers off incredibly high catwalks and hear them shriek as they plummet. that's what ya get for not putting railings on anything, assholes. the lightsaber duels are also very cool, particularly when i discovered i could run across walls. probably the best first-person shooter i've played since Half-Life. or maybe Deus Ex.

Just finished the first two missions, and between this, Freedom Force, and Dungeon Siege, I may not see the light of day for a while.
As for the packaging, I for one was getting tired of buying some huge box only to find a jewel case, a manual, and some coupons, with some folded cardboard inside to take up the extra space. Now if the smaller size translates to lower prices due to being cheaper to produce, I would be ecstatic.

God this game is amazing! This game captures the Star Wars universe like no other has.
The lightsaber duels are absolutely unbelievably fun and just like the movies.
I'm almost out of Bespin now, I think. Been fighting those Reborn Jedi like crazy....
"Do you fear me??" Their one-liners are cool! I was mowing those little suckers down, though with that backwards slash or something.
Coolness oozes out of this game.....

hehe, the DVD type cases have been happening in my country for a year and a half now. and please, don't think that this is an environmental issue: it's purely because retailers pressured the game companies into doing smaller cases which will take up less space. but dammit, I like those extra maps n shit that comes with a big case... well, there will always be exceptions, of course (RPGs, etc)

I don't know what happened to those dvd style cases that briefly appeared on Canadian store shelves last year. I got Deus Ex and Unreal Tournament Gold edition in those dvd casings. I guess they're collectors items now eh?
I didn't mind then, nor do I mind now about the box size if the makers of the games continue to put out decent manuals and none of that pdf/cd-based manual bs. I also think it's just a tad silly to proclaim the golden age of pc gaming ending over a reduced box size....it's the games and content that count. And we've seen a wonderful crop of games in the past few years or so. (Sorry to lash at you Verbal but that statement of yours really has been bothering me for a while now.)
As for Jedi Knight 2, one more reason why the 'golden age' is far from being over. Raven did a great job utilizing the Star Wars universe. The soundtrack, textures, weapons. I was surprised to come out of the mine and find a walker stomping my way with fighters buzzing around in the air. Hectic as hell.
I don't know if it's my mouse or not but trying to rebind the using force powers to my 4th mouse button isn't working (it'd be a whole lot cooler if it was), and it would be a lot easier if I were able to configure force power selection to the mouse wheel as well. It's a bit ackward using the ASWD configuration while trying to hit the F Keys.
So far it's a great game. Among many great games that are still being pumped out by developers. I've yet to try multiplay...I'll hold off until I get a better grasp of the force powers and light sabre dueling.
So there it is.

Just finished the game, and GOD was this a great game. Had me playing for a full week.
I was a little underwhelmed by the ending, it's sorta like they had to wrap it up quick. But maybe that's just me. And Dessann was a PUSHOVER, it only took me a couple of reloads to defeat him. I played on Jedi mode, so of course that will differ.
All in all, a memorable game. I'm sorry it's over!

Verbal, you're absolutely right about the ending. The earlier cutscene where you see Desaan's ship leaving the spaceport was ten times more dramatic than the ending scene. And, like you, I thought Desaan was pretty easy, but of course there is that invulnerability thingie in there that helped quite a bit. The fight with what's-his-name in the powered armor was a lot tougher to me (not to mention trying to get out of the damn ship after the gravity gets shot to hell!).

Well, I have to be honest with you, I used God mode against Galak Fyyar. I just didn't feel like messing around with him, I wanted to cut to the chase. But I know I easily could have done it if I had more patience.
But other than that, I didn't cheat ONCE.
I didn't even use that invulnerability thing in the middle. What I kept doing was running around, using Speed, taking slashes at him in the Strong stance, running around, quicksaving, and repeating the process. And when you finally walk away from him after he's dead, they totally set it up for him to get up again, showing the lightsaber in his hand. And WTF, Kyle didn't even SAY ANYTHING!!!!!! When, in any game, have you vanquished the end boss and the character not say A WORD! But I mean, your first Reborn fight was more epic than this one, am I right? The location for that fight was at least a lot cooler than this one.
The ending is my only main gripe; this game was kickass. Oh, and I briefly tried multiplayer, which seemed like it could be a lot of fun but I was so not used to dueling against a live person. I got my ass kicked. Will be fun, though, in time.

Okay my computer can run Ultima 9 pretty well, will Jedi Knight 2 work on it?

okay, after a re-install of my mouse software everything is so much better. It's so intuitive to use the mouse wheel to select force powers then clicking down on the wheel/button to use them. I'm having a blast force gripping those sob's then slashing them to shreds, or even just doing force pull/push back and forth for a while.

But my computer is an absolute piece of shit, 300 mhz, and it runs smooth as day. It chugs in outdoor environments, but there aren't that many. Also in large fights, but it's tolerable.

When I fought Dessan, the first thing he did was throw his saber; his saber missed me and ended up on the ground - I charged him where he stood with his back to a piece of debris or something and killed him by STANDING STILL with my lighsaber poking him non-stop in the chest while he was pinned.
I didn't even hit 'fire' at all.
Talk about an anti-climactic fight.. Cool game though; I only ran into one bad bug in it and the saber-fights were just awesome. The faux jedi were great.
