My living room recently gave birth to an adopted ps2. I'm looking to pick up some games and could use a hand. Share with me your favorite games and I promise great karma will come your way.

xtheshapex.... Well, Maximo is way cool. Makes me remember the way games used to be. That is hard. Lives and continues actually matter in this game. Virtua Fighter 4 ships tomorrow, and I will be picking it up. You should too if you like fighting games. The RE:CV for PS2 is good if you haven't played the Dreamcast one. I recomend picking it up since you can get a used copy for relatively cheap. However, if you have a GameCube, look out for the RE remake coming out in May. It scored a 39/40 in Famitsu which is quite a feat, especially for a remake. I can't wait for it. If you haven't seen any screens or movie of the new RE for GC, it IMHO easily has the best graphics in a game ever.

Overmind, I was thinking the same thing-- BEST GRAPHICS EVER without a doubt. It's gonna be hard to not piss myself playing that game. If I ever get a Gamecube, that is.

But dear god the game looks REAL. Did you see the killer bees? The stingers were like baseball bats!

Oh yea, the game does look awesome and there is a definite ship date of April 30. I'm excited. Gotta go pick up Virtua Fighter 4 though.

I too am psyched for the new RE and will have it day one.

But back to the PS2 games.

Has anyone played Fatal Frame? I saw a thread on it in the CC forum. Just wondering if it was worth the purchase.

I've heard Fatal Frame was good, if you like scary games, and don't mind very little action happening.. I love games like Silent Hill so I think i'll like this.. I may pick it up soon.Supposed to be scary as hell though.

Rent it first. It's not bad, but to me, it's not worth a purchase.

I picked up Virtua Fighter 4 yesterday and it is easily the best fighting game ever created for any system I've seen. Being able to play Shun, the drunken boxer and Fei, the Shaolin monk is worth the $50 alone. The animation is OUTSTANDING, the inclusion of fighting stances that your characters can switch to mid-fight which alter all of your moves, the multiple training modes that teach you to do reversals, counters and deflections and combos.. The amount of 'realism' is fucking spectacular and I love that there is a complete lack of 'flying 20ft through the air on wires' or 'tap 4 buttons and do a 20 hit combo' shit. The VF series has always been about real fighting styles and they've simply perfected it with this game.

This game immediately became my favorite fighter of all time, and fits solidly in my #2 slot for best ps2 game after GTA3; fucking AWESOME, and it has that same unmistakable sense of quality GTA3 has. The training modes are a stroke of genius and a cursory glance at them can give even the worst button-masher some fundemental skills.

STELLAR.

PS2 leads in the console wars due to hype. Well, that, and Nintendo's fatal error of a cartridge based system for the 64. As I see it, PS's success revolves around obtaining Square.

I think a big part of their success is on account of their new best friend...

it's short, but it's one of the few games with any emotional resonance.

THPS 3
VF 4
GTA 3

These alone should keep you busy for a very long time. If you can only get one, make sure its Tony Hawk.

I only play 2 games on my PS2 (time being a factor since I have a 7-month-old), so I'll just list all the PS2 games I own:

1) NCAA 2002
2) Madden 2002

Those are the 2 I play. I also own:

3) Ready to Rumble 2
4) Madden 2001
5) Klonoa 2
6) Final Fantasy X

The wife plays those last two (when she can), and seems to like them very much.

I rented GTA3 and enjoyed it, but got stuck in one of the harder missions. I also rented NFL 2K2 and wasn't too impressed. As far as football games go, any 989 Sports game I've played so far on the PS2, well, SUCKS. They may have some features that the Madden/NCAA games don't have, but the general gameplay was pantaloons.
