April 14, 2003 - According to several online gaming sites, including Magic Box and Spong, rumors are flying out of Japan claiming that Gran Turismo 4 will feature 2,000 cars, more than 100 tracks, and be fully compatible with the PS2 Network Adapter.

Additionally, the game is said to have a new online battle mode which allows up to eight players simultaneously. Rumors also suggest the inclusion of online car trading, and full support for voice chat using a compatible headset. If the rumored inclusion of voice chat is true, it would imply that the game may support only broadband connections due to bandwidth considerations.

While all of these details are strictly rumors, some border on believable, even likely. But having 2,000 cars and 100 tracks is pretty far out there. Still, stranger things have happened, and the prospect is intriguing nonetheless.

Expect a full blowout on Gran Turismo 4 at this year's E3.
From the Mag PSW:

From the latest PSW magazine in the Global News section.

"The real driving simulator series has always offered the most comprehensive range of real cars - GT3 amassing over 500 - but that figure looks to be eclipsed by the sequel, which offers a staggering 2,000 real motors. This time around, we can expect to see a large number of convertibles, too - everything from a second hand Mazda MX-5 to a brand new Honda S2000 - all with accurately modelled drivers behind the wheel!

In line with the huge selection of cars, the track count has also been increased to over 100 circuits before any talk of reverse laps. Other features include online play, with players now able to talk to competitors using the telesales headset and, more importantly, compete online against eight rival drivers while gambling away a selection of prized supercars. The possibility of trading mufflers, body kits and racing chips over the net could cause car fans to behave like frenzied playground Pokemon traders.

But perhaps the most ambitious (and judging by your letters and emails, also the most sought after) feature that developer Polyphony is hoping to include is real damage effects for each car, which should mean no more bouncing off boundry walls like a rubber clad Robin Reliant. More details on this very soon."So what do you think? I do know that Polyphony was having trouble with car damage since the manufacturers of the cars didn't want they're images being spoiled but maybe they worked something out. Online play sounds enticing if it's true - meaning we won't have to deal with the unemotive AI from the originals. As for the 2,000 cars and 100 tracks, seems far fetched but alot can happen in two years (since GT3).

I just might buy a PS2 again if this were all true. In any case, it's a long ways off.

Sega GT is going to go Live on Xbox by Christmas so we'll get a preview of what this could be like. GT is set to offer all the things mentioned in these articles. Maybe sega'll tweaked their game a little more in light of these rumors.
