View Full Version : Return to Castle Wolfenstein...Again

Just got the next issue of the x-box magazine. Splattered all over the cover was Wolfenstein, the review, and the precious demo on the disc. Sadly, no sign of the Splinter Cell bonus level the Live owners can download.
As far as the review goes, it sounds as great as the pc edition. But gameplay wise is the addition of some new content, and better (all game makers should take note) co-op play. NOLF 2 had it but not really, Halo did, Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance as well, and now this baby. I'm really considering buying this game all over again just so my wife, neighbor, or brother can sit down with me and we can go hunt some orc...or in this case Nazi's.
I envy any of the people hooked up on x-box live when this ships in the next month (may 6th I think). You got all those great levels to play around in, the modes of play, and the different classes to play as...all with voice support. I might just buy myself a Live kit when this game ships, but I still love the more intuitive control scheme on my computer though to abandon it.
Anyone else awaiting this title?

I'm getting it for sure for the Live aspect. I played through the PC version already so I doubt I'll make the single player a priority with my serious backlog of games I have picked up on release day yet haven't even opened yet. The aformentioned Splinter Cell being one of those.
I had a love/hate relationship with the PC version. I thought as a FPS it was solid and very fun but as a Wolfenstein sequel, the first FPS I ever played when the original was released, obviously, since it was the first 3D FPS ever released, I thought it was a complete and utter failure. I overhyped the damn thing in my head too much and was expecting something more I guess. Just thought I'd throw that in there.

I got the demo too...I guess it's OK. Nothing spectacular. It actually reminds me how difficult id games can be. I beat the crypt level in 10 minutes, but the factory level is tough.
Still, you gotta love those fire effects....

I'm probably anticipating this game more than anything else this year, unless, of course, Halo 2 drops before New Years. It just can't get here soon enough.

I hope the cooperative is cool, the world needs more fun co-op games. Multiplayer is really the only reason to bother with Wolfenstein - the SP game offers virtually nothing new to the FPS world, but that's par for the course, and it is fun in parts. Luckily the MP portion is not just serviceable, it's fantastic. I hope they can keep that intact for the X-Box.
It's dwindled, but there was a highly active set of leagues organized around Wolf teamplay online - someone created a spectator system (which also exists for Quake3) for viewing matches without having to join the same server they were running on so hundreds of folks could watch big matches. It was great to be able to tune in and watch highly organized Wolf games a couple times each week; it's an excellent MP game.

had time away from zelda this morning and I'm surprised the control scheme for this sucker isn't bad at all. It's just (almost) as intuitive as the mouse/keyboard setting, except for the weirdness of jumping/crouching. I'm sold on this port.
Anyone who got their feet wet with Halo will be absolutely comfortable. This game is going to be big for Live for sure...I can't wait for the chewers to sink their teeth into the d-day level.

I played the Demo last night...I will definitely be all over this one when it ships. Very nice indeed. And LIVE play should be very, very sweet indeed !!!
Hope to see some Chewers on LIVE.....and it should definitely be a great game ...great team play.

Bump, because it comes out in a week.
Does anybody know if the multiplayer options for Wolfenstein will include A.I. bots? The multiplayer sounds fantastic, but I don't have the broadband connection or the money for Xbox live, and the multiplayer component doesn't sound like it would work with only two or three characters. Can't find info on this anywhere...anybody here know?

This one drops tomorrow. I know I'll be picking up my pre-order at lunch tomorrow. This one is poised to be the Live title of the year (since Halo 2 isn't till next year now)....can't wait to fire it up tomorrow. It should also prove to be an awesome LAN party game too.

Question for you folks who just bought it...
If you don't have Xbox Live, are there bots in the multiplayer, or are you stuck with just 2-4 characters? Because right now, that's probably the deciding factor whether or not I drop $50 on the game this weekend.

Unfortunately, no. Not according to the manual anyway.
Still, it's worth it just for the single player. I'd say get it for when you do get X-Box Live in the future.

Not to go off on a whole big rant thing, but this is the one thing I hate most of all about online gaming. It fucks over the people who would rather play against human opponents in the same room. Going up against a squad of Nazi goons with three buddies by my side would have been unbelievably cool. This sucks.
Oh well. Thanks, Verbal.

Well, you can play the single player campaign in co-op with one other friend, but just one.Yeah, but I've heard from a lot of people that the single player campaign is kinda lackluster, and that the game's real value is that its multiplayer was unbeatable.
I'll probably hold off for a while on picking this up--I've got too many damn writing revisions to do right now anyway--but once you fight through the single player campaign, Verbs, let us know how it was, okay?
Appreciated.

Damn this game kicks ass !! Off line mode is supreme...graphics have improved even more since the demo. Great frame rate and level of detail is outstanding all around.
X-Box Live - awesome gameplay...the first night some games were a bit laggey...but I think the problem is that people are trying to run with more people than their connection will allow. I hosted my own game last night with some friends. My connection rate allowed up to 8 and I played for about 3 hours last night completely smooth and lag free in a 4 vs 4 (Allied vs Axis) Elimination game. Very, very cool indeed.

My roommate bought this the other day, saving me fifty bucks. Nice.
On the whole, I like it alot. The control seems weird and janky, but I was able to adjust it to near-"Halo" levels in the option screen, so no problems there. On the whole, it's fun, fast, and surprisingly good-looking. Several of the missions have that "oh SHIT!" cool factor that I haven't seen in a FPS since Halo dropped two years ago.
A few complaints:
--Not being able to save in co-op mode is horseshit. My roommate and I played the game for damn near six straight hours, only to suddenly realize that we would have to start from the beginning again the next time we booted up the Xbox. That's just cruel.
--A flashlight would have made a lot of the levels a lot easier to navigate.
--It still sucks that you can't do splitscreen multiplayer on a single system.
--The stealth sections are ass, especially with the automatic checkpoints. I must have replayed one mission thirty times, and each time an alarm was sounded for no reason. When I finally restarted the level, I beat it on my first try. Whatever.
On the whole, though, I'm definitely digging it. Great fun, despite a few glaring problems.

damn, you can't save your progress in co-op? What's the point of it all then...
I'm stumped at the 'stealth' level you mentioned, as I don't remember it...must be one of the prequel levels added, yes? (prequel as in the pc-edition started in the prison/escape level)
Slater
05-12-2003, 12:14 PM
No, it's the level where you parachute into the forest, during the mission to steal the Cobra plane. Near the end of the mission, you have to snipe and/or stealth kill four or five guards before hiding in the back of a truck, but they won't let you kill the last guard. I tried everything I could possibly think of, including using my sniper rifle to destroy every single alarm box in the stage, and I still couldn't get the dumbassed game to check the "Prevent Any Alarms From Being Triggered" objective off my list. It was just a glitch, but it was a fucking bad one. I was so pissed I almost quit the game, right then and there.

still cannot recall that level...oh well, it's been a year since playing it.
I dug the mission that comes up relating to the cobra mission...where you have to destroy the radar/missile base. Running in and out guns blazing was absolute fun without none of that sissy sneaking around nonsense.

Finally beat the single player mode. The game was surprisingly short--I finished on the normal difficulty in a little under ten hours. The final boss was incredibly underwhelming, to boot. Still, getting the complete Wolfenstein 3D as an unlockable bonus is a sweet deal, and whenever I finally get a broadband connnection, this seems like it'll be a blast online.

While playing with buddies the other night....we were picking different character classes and requesting ammo and med kits from each other to stay alive and calling out where snipers were etc....that really will make you see this game in a whole new light. It's every bit as much fun as our Halo matches.
The Normandy beach invasion Objective map is incredible in a nice 4 vs 4 setup.

Just rented this a few minutes ago and beat the first level. I don't have a manual and don't know about the bonus stuff you get at the level end. I got some blocks to adjust health/ammo/armor and what not. Do the changes just affect my guy for the next level or throughout the rest of the game? Just wondering if I should use them at the end of every level or save them until I need them. Help!

Nevermind, I figured it out. Good game, a little dark, needs a flashlight.

This game put me to sleep on single player and co-op but goddamn - this game is the best XBL game to date not to mention one of the only games were playing a random game with unknowns is just as enjoyable as playing with your normal online "friends".
I lose intrest in games pretty fast so this is on the backshelf thanks to Brute Force and tomorrow Midnight Club II but if you see me on toss me an invite and I'll invite you to one the games going on. My XBL name is the same here as there.
