Secession's bullshit. I hope I'm moved and out of here by then.

And the ArchLight is fucking gorgeous, but like "Lion King," I'm not going over there every night as a regular thing.

What area do you, SJR, live in anyways?

As for secession I believe the valley does need it unfortunately BUT at the present time we have no where near the kind of leaders that we will need to run the 6th largest city in the US and as of right now its deziens are making fools of themselves by going on with these bs names they have decided to be the top 5 choices....we will easily be the laughing stock of the country if we decide to name ourselves something like Camelot or New Valley city or whatever. I also do not think most voters are educated enough to realize the difficulties facing us should we secede. There is much that will need to be done and so much hours in rezoning and such. New police dept. fire and so on.

Time will tell but i hope for the best.

Good to hear about the Archlight.....what does that place actually include anyways? I know it brags about the bar and more leg room and such but I am more eager to know about the experience it gives you. I figure I will go and see SW2 there since they have the digital projectors and such. 14 bucks a ticket better be worth it thats for sure.

I'm in Sherman Oaks near the Fashion Square Mall.

The Archlight has a full restaurant, not just a bar! I will probably head down for Star Wars. I had no idea it was showing there, but that's definitely a place to see it.

Other than the ranch, of course.

Other than the ranch, of course.Ah so you stop by the Pacific Galleria 16 for movies or are you just the studio movie theatre go getter? I am either there or the Winnetka 21 in Chatsworth. Though I suppose I should update my tastes to some of the more classy theatres in Hollywood. Lemmele(sp?) on Sunset is a bit of a ways away from me. Ultimately I prefer my own home theatre dvd. You can snuggle better with your significant other in a home then the theatre. :D

Ah if there is confusion I am stating that I believe Star wars will show there when it comes out considering Lucas' wanting to use all the digital theatres he can. Probably it will play there ot ir will end up playing at the IMAX over at Universal City. Either way I want to see it digital. See what the fuss is all about.

Yeah, I don't see that many movies outside of screenings these days, but I've been to the new Pacific Galleria theater and dig it. I saw "Dark Blue World" at the new Pacific theater in Pasadena and liked that one, too.

Where are you exactly?

Im up here at the north end of the valley near Porter Ranch. Pretty much nearing Santa Clarita Valley. Nice more quiet place to live and we have our share of "stars" pop around to live up here. Though Xzibit, Zeus(that guy from Friday), and Five for Fighting guy dont rock the world. My lady keeps complaining how dull the valley is though. Shes more a native of WeHo and Malibu. I think it might be time for me to move to greener pastures soon.

Oh another question....how can I get more info on screenings out in LA then what the Times provides and such?

Hopefully I will be working at paramount sooner or later(depends on if a certain Mr. Hal Harrison remembers my name or better yet his secretray :D ) but until then I have been dry on finding screenings. Any help?

And SJR what do you think of the film schools we have out here?

Been looking at LA Film School but it sure comes with a price.

Don't know if this is your forte but i am looking not to waste money nor my time without results. Also got a woman that i may very well marry and i dont want to put her through hell for no outcome worth while.

I've never been to film school, but can just tell you what some people have told me. If you're looking to get a solid job straight out of school doing commercial work, making some connections here and there, yeah, the L.A. Film School is probably just groovy. However, USC, UCLA, and then for grad work, AFI are all supposed to kick ass, but more than that, you meet the right people and the right people see your output. All the schools have big ties to certain places, but the bigger name schools have stronger ones with more A-list variety.

It all depends on what you want to do. There's that school of thought that says you should just go to Concorde-New Horizons, Full Moon or somewhere and do shit-work just to get on a few sets in a working capacity in order to have hands-on production work be your film school.

Can't really help you, but good luck! Anybody else?

Thanks sir.

Right now as a twenty year old i am just trying to get all the prospects straight and in order to see all the options I have. I have heard enough stories of these twenty somethings go to major studios with four year degrees in film, all for low key jobs and they get turned away. I suppose it is a good thing I happen to know a pretty well known TV editor or this kid from the valley ould get no where.

Its a cruel cruel world.

Damn. I had typed out at length how I handled the same dilemma, then I lost my connection and everything I had typed. So this version will probably be a little shorter.

Went to Indiana U., where there was no film program. Majored in Telecom, with emphasis on TV/Video Production. Minor in comparative Literature which was really classes in film history/theory/criticism/genres.

Had a few video related gigs, then moved to NYC. Eventually got into freelance PA work. Hated it to death, but had some interesting experiences and came away with a few interesting friends.

Now I do office work, Executive Assistant type stuff for a company that's "non-pro". In my free time, I try my hand at screenwriting, just like every other human here in LA. The dream remains alive. The practicalities of life andmoneymaking just got in the way.

And I live in Silver Lake.

I have often thought about getting more schooling, but it gets harder and harder the older you get. I kind of wish I had done it straight away after undergrad. Some film students I have talked to had very few good things to say, most said it wasn't worth it.

I agree with Jack's statement that it depends on what you want to do. If you're determined to walk out of film school as a director, go that route. If you aren't sure then perhaps some PA work would help you figure it out.

Mr. Ruby, I saw in another thread that you did your grad school at IU. Very cool. My sister, while she did not go to IU, is starting grad school at UT in the fall.

As a South Bay resident, I'm all for the Valley seceding from L.A. Then we can charge them to come to our beaches. . . Anyway, most of the Valley speaks some other language (valleyspeak) anyway. Good riddance, I say. :)
