GLENDALE -- The appeal of Margarit Iskenderian's cooking survived civil war and emigration, fueling a popular Southland fast-food chain known for its garlicky chicken and speedy service.
Tuesday, the 75-year-old matriarch of the Zankou Chicken clan was found dead in a hillside home in Glendale, killed alongside her daughter, Dzovig Marjik, 45.
Police said their deaths were at the hands of son Mardiros Iskenderian, 56, who then took his own life.
"There is a lot of passion and prayer going on at this moment," said a minister who identified himself as a Youth Pastor Mano of Armenian Celicia Evangelical Church in Pasadena. "There is no finger-pointing -- it's a sad story of a family ending this way."
Mardiros Iskenderian was in the late stages of brain and bladder cancer, police and friends said, which may have affected his mental state.
He shot his sister in the face and his mother multiple times in the back after an argument erupted Tuesday in Marjik's home in the 3400 block of Ayers Canyon Way, said Glendale police spokesman Sgt. Kirk Palmer.
"We have not determined a motive except that this was the culmination of family tensions," Palmer said.
Very sad. Zankou Chicken is indeed some of the best food I've ever eaten...I'd put it even above the fried chicken at Weaver D's in Athens. And this seems like an exceptionally sad story for any family.
