In the aftermath of such quality video game-to-film transfers (please note the sarcasm), I got to thinking that there should be a movie made based upon, in my opinion, pretty much the best damn role-playing/first person shooter game ever, Half-Life.

If you've ever played the kick-ass game before, you'll know there are quite a few cool little cinematic moments throughout the whole thing and enough tension, scares, and creepy dark spaces to last you a lifetime. Hell, you could just about record someone playing the game itself for about 2 hours and it would be more thrilling and entertaining than just about any other video game movie ever.

But imagine a film where the facehuggers from Alien were constantly jumping out at the characters, taking bites out of them and generally being a pain in the ass the whole time. Not to mention some mutated scientists, a few baddies who shoot electrical power, random non-player characters (scientists and security guards mainly) that can help along the way only to be eventually killed off, creatures that can suddenly be transported to only a few steps in front of the characters, that big green claw thing in the center of the room that goes after the characters whenever they make noise, the big, mutated sharks, a military conspiracy where the soldiers have been ordered to take out anyone still left alive; oh, did I mention that eventually our hero is sent to another dimension to fight the baddies? Its all right there for someone to make. Incredible visuals, cool enemies, lots of character interaction, a fight to survive, puzzles to solve to reach new places in the base that will hopefully lead to better weapons or, more importantly, a way out, and, best of all, so much tension you could cut it with a knife.

I think this could be one of the greatest action/sci-fi films ever, even if they just took the basic plotline from the game itself. What do you all think?

Half Life is good, but Dues Ex does it better.

I'd like to see this done, but I would like to have a changed ending. I felt that the alien homeworld sequences were by far the worst parts of the game and just weren't very impressive. I think it would be much cooler if Gordon Freeman had to fight his way out of the compound and maybe he could head off to the alien homeworld in a sequel.

Eat the Cheese Biscuits, fool:
Half Life is good, but Dues Ex does it better.Half-Life made Deus Ex possible.

And every other FPS that has been made since.

Half-Life, to me, is better just for the sheer abundance of mods.

Yes, Half-life would be a cool movie, but I personally think Starcraft would be kinda neat. Even if they decided to do it all CGI.

(I know it rips off about 30 movies already as a game, but the cut sequences are very well done in the game itself...)

Half-Life and Deus Ex were actually in production at the same time, so neither really made the other possible. Half-Life did set a bar, though

and a Half-Life movie is in the early stages, but from what i understand, Valve is being very cautious with the property. maybe i'll hear something more at E3 next week

I would still like to see a Duke Nukem flick.

Regardless of the game's merits, Deus Ex would make a better movie. It has a very distinctive style and a complex plot. I can't help but feel a Half-life movie would not have enough plot to distinguish it, and the movie would instead rely on the gimmick of its video game origins. We all know how well that's worked in the past.

Saw this on Coming Attractions...thought it was relevant to this thread...I think it's cool as hell.

May 23, 2002... Columbia Pictures has optioned the feature film rights for Eidos Interactive's award-winning PC video game Deus Ex. Producer Laura Ziskin (Spider-Man) brought the game to the attention of Columbia Executive Vice President of Production Matt Tolmach, who will oversee the project with Vice President of Production Rachel O'Connor. Marc Evans will oversee the project on behalf of Ziskin's production company. Eidos is in development on a sequel to Deus Ex which it expects to release in 2003.

""With the brand awareness of the title and a fantastically conceived hero at the core of this film, we feel we can develop Deus Ex as a potential franchise for the studio," said Peter Schlessel, President of Production for Columbia Pictures. "Our challenge will be capturing all the story elements that have made this one of the most popular PC games and delivering a film that has a distinctive look, execution and feel."

The movie will follow the game's setting. In the year 2052 as the world confronts the threat of a crippling disease, economic collapse and the threat of global terrorism, a highly-trained, nano-technology enhanced counter-terrorist by the name of JC Denton unravels one conspiracy after another against the government. Eventually Denton must decide between continuing to serve the government or helping to overthrow it.

"Deus Ex is an exciting world full of great bad guys and good guys with a movie star role in the character of JC Denton. There is an amazing ambition and depth to the story and we're excited that it has attracted a writer of Greg's intelligence and ability," producer Laura Ziskin said.

Meh.

-Dan, watching a once great game transform in to a substandard "cyberpunk" thriller before his eyes.
