View Full Version : What's with the "6th Sense" bashing?

I realize this film isn't exactly the masterpiece to end all, but come on... isn't this anti-6th Sense popularity backlash a bit silly?
Some of you guys sound like Hollywood press automatons. We're better than that.
It's a good movie... nothing more, nothing less. Solid, entertaining, and well crafted. Live with it.

I really enjoyed this film. It made my honorable mentions for the year and your right, it doesn't deserve this backlash. People can be so cruel!

I liked the movie. I'm of two minds, however, about the twist ending. Part of me saw it as a suprising, shocking, out of nowhere turn and another part of me saw it as somewhat of an implausible twist done solely for shock value. Seriously, how could he not have known after all that time? The explanation the kid gave, in the final analysis, sounded all too convienint. But overall it was a good movie with strong performances and some geniunely eerie scenes.

Well, I wrote the article so allow me to express my thoughts. There's been a backlash against The Sixth Sense? I thought everybody loved it... I enjoyed the film, but I just found it to be overrated. It wasn't spectacular like everybody has been making it out to be... just letting my thoughts run wild.

I think there was somewhat of a backlash against the film (but not a large one by any means). It seems like it came somewhere after its 6 weeks at the top (or was it 5?), but there was some. Its a shame too, but when a film gets that much press and so many people are raving about it...people are bound to have enough. I went to the movie about two and a half weeks into its release, knowing about all the great reviews but not knowing the twist, and walked out loving it. It was NOT the best of the year, the kid did a great job, and the story was pretty much flawless. No holes that I can remember and sure, the wrap-up was a seeming simple ending but it worked like hell!

I just wish Fight Club would have came out before 6th Sense... that way the quasi-similar endings wouldn't have made people think Fight Club was too much of a clone..

400? Funny you say that, Nick. Look at my profile and see how many posts I've made. I think I need to cut back.

Well...finally saw it today...and I must say it was GREAT! But what completely threw me was the ending...it was just so unexpected and yet strangely unsatisfying

I was satisfied with the ending/twist. What left it open (or whatever) for you? I feel it was a strong wrap-up that, in a strange way, made total sense.

I agree with Adam. This wasn't one of those weird endings that was just thrown in there for shock value (though some claim that). This film was intricately planned and crafted. Watch it again and you will see. I might be stepping on toes when I say it may even be better crafted than "The Usual Suspects", a GREAT film with another "twist" ending that makes more sense upon repeat viewings.

Actually, I've referred to the film as "the Usual Suspects of ghost stories."
I loved it, but I'm biased...that's the sort of thing I love to write, ever since I was introduced to the concept of the mental mousetrap in things like Deathtrap, The Westing Game, and Marion Z. Bradley's original Lythande story.
Now if I could only SELL those things for just as much money ;}

The ending of Sixth Sense was not a shock-value ending. It was definitely planned. You'd have to see that from when it first happened and you questioned yourself about all the people he ":spoke" to during the year, which of course he did not do, once you go back and look at it.
Done very well from that aspect.

You know, this movie still makes me shudder and think about how much I didn't think during it at all.
that and I looked for the oldest post to post something about.

And here's the twist ending...we're all just figments of Nick's derranged imagination.
I really enjoyed the movie, but thought the ending was o.k. I saw it coming and felt like it didn't fly. I find it implausable that Bruce Willis' character wouldn't try to talk to someone other than his wife or the kid. And he wears too many changes of clothes.
Reminds me of another Bruce Willis/ M. Night Shalayman flick I just saw --Unbreakable. Great movie until the last five minutes.
