A recent one: Tilda Swinton, The Deep End
An amazing performance. I felt like a voyeur, watching someone else's worst day. Can't understand how she missed out.

Steven Seagal, Hard to Kill.

"I'm gonna to take you to the bank. To the BLOOD bank."

Even a nod from the Academy would have been nice.

Eric Roberts, "Star 80"

Damn fucking right. We're talking peak Deniro level of acting. So good, it probably ruined Roberts' career. But I'd take Paul Snider over Travis Bickle any day.

Jim Carrey, "The Truman Show"

Dan Laugharn

Mitchum at 57 is bullshit. But nice to see some Throne of Blood love in there.

Eddie Murphy for Nutty Professor? He'd played multiple roles before and in a more creative fashion (see Coming to America).

I don't know if there's a one star/one film thing going on, but I think bigger snubs for people already on the list are Cary Grant for North by Northwest and Bill Murray for Rushmore.

Glad to see Samuel L. in the top five for Jungle Fever. Cannes film festival invented a prize to give him for that performance and he wasn't even nominated. That was one of the most offensive things ever to see not nominated vs the five who were:
City Slickers - Jack Palance
Barton Fink - Michael Lerner
Bugsy - Harvey Keitel
Bugsy - Ben Kingsley
JFK - Tommy Lee Jones

Richard Dickson

Sean Bean for FOTR

Christopher Lloyd for Back to the Future

I'm trying to figure out what would make them name Christopher Walken for Pennies From Heaven. I love that movie, as much as anyone can, and certainly Walken's striptease to the tune of "Let's Misbehave" was unforgettable( eek! ), but Steve Martin didn't get nominated for that film either. Considering that Martin played the lead, and incredibly I might add, and Walken wasn't even in the film for ten minutes, EW's ideas seem as skewed as the Academy's.
EW pisses me off. It used to be like this smart mischievous kid, but it grew into the useless cheerleader bimbo that sleeps with all the football players and never does her own homework. You'd think that if they were willing to get behind old and accepted yet edgy films that they would be willing to use their power for the benefit of new ones. But apparently they don't care enough.

And Hopper got nominated for HOOSIERS instead of BLUE VELVET. It was the safer pick that year. Both were good performances though.

Sean Connery, "From Russia with Love"

Huh?

I'm just glad to see some more Touch of Evil Orson-love. Though my wife commences ranting whenever Gene Hackman's unnominated performance in The Royal Tenenbaums is mentioned.

Molly Ringwald???

Never understood the comments on these boards about Sean Bean for Best Supporting Actor in LOTR.

How about Jeff Bridges in Big Lebowski or Harrison Ford in Mosquito Coast?

Matt Goldberg

That reminds me: John Goodman for Big Lebowski is also a major snub in my book.

Guy Pearce for L.A. Confidential (supporting) and Memento (lead).

Humphrey Bogart - Treasure of the Sierra Madre

No shit. I recently rewatched African Queen , which is the movie he won the oscar for, and imho the job he did in Treasure blows that performance away. But then I believe Casablanca is the most nearly perfect film ever, so I'm a little biased. :D

Also:
Edward G. Robinson - Double Indemnity
Damn straight. One of the greatest supporting performances I can think of that wasn't nominated. Great film, great actor, great call.

Oh, and:

Lauren Bacall - To Have and Have Not

19 years old, making her screen debut, and OWNING it. She should have won the oscar just on the basis of HOTNESS. They don't build 'em like that anymore. :)

I spent a blissful two hours watching E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial again last night. Henry Thomas is just breathtaking as Elliott. One of the benchmarks of great acting.

Oh yeah, and they're absolutely right about Nicole Kidman in The Others. That she wasn't even nominated for that performance is criminal.

Which just further proves my theory-no, not that Germans love David Hasslehoff, but that the Oscars are completely full of shit. It's all about politics and bullshit. When Forrest Gump beat out Pulp Fiction for best flick that's when I knew it was all about not rocking the boat. Julia Roberts? Pssh. Don't even get me started.

Not even for Campbell's Home Cooking Soup.

Alec Guinness for "Kind Hearts and Coronets" is dead on. As for Peter Sellers, I would've given it to him for "A Shot in the Dark," one of the greatest comedic perfs ever.

Boris Karloff for "Frankenstein" and Bill Murray for "Groundhog Day" are things we pretty much see with great hindsight as well. Rita Hayworth missing out for "Gilda" is a fucking crime, though, as is John Wayne for "The Searchers."

"Oh, it's just a noir picture" or "Oh, it's just a Western."

I would have liked to see Christopher Plummer for "The Insider", Richard Harris for "Unforgiven", Sean Bean for "FOTR," and Paul Bettany for either "A Knight's Tale" or "A Beautiful Mind."

Stew

I wholeheartedly agree about Christopher Plummer for "The Insider".

I personally thought that Deniro's "Heat" performance was his 90s best, and better than some of his other nominated performances.

Norton(lead), HBC(supporting), Pitt(supporting) for Fight Club? I thought they were awesome performances, and I can't even think of anyone else that could have pulled off those roles...
