Great review, Grendel!

I haven't finished dreamcatcher yet but I think it's an amazing piece of work so far. My favorite character is Kurtz, another sublime Stephen King villain, although the visual I'm getting for him is totally Herr Starr from Preacher. I also love Mr. Gray/Jonesy. I love the writing, love the setting, the tone, the characters, all of it. I recommend it to everyone on these message, particularly Nick who I'm sure will have an affinity for the ass weasels.

William Goldman is adapting this for the movies (same combo for Hearts in Atlantis, which I'm also seriously jonesing to see). Can't wait.

Nice review. I just finished this myself, and it's a relief to realize that King has retained that special voice that has made him so influential to so many of us. If anything, the anger at his accident gave the book a bit of fire that was surprising.

And your Daryl Hannah line is responsible for the Mountain Dew that came out of my nose, ya bastard.

While reading this, which I bought the day it came out, just like every other King book over the past decade, I couldn't picture how they'd do it as a movie. So much of it is telepathic, and during the last half Jonesy is trapped in his own mind. I just can't see it transfering well to screen.

Great review, though. Glad to see others enjoyed it as much as I.

Butane: I disagree...I think it could translate to film REALLY well, and not all that difficultly...Jonesy may be in his head, but he's in an actual physical room from his memory...in his head. You just close in on the character's eye, through it into his brain a la FIGHT CLUB, and then into the room where, once again, the character is sitting.

Man, I hate to be the sole voice of discontent, but I'm not too happy at this point. Kurtz has just fired up his men for some sort of assault and I couldn't give a shit. Get me back to the Beav or Jonesy--does King want to try and become the next Tom Clancy?

The novel just isn't grooving at this point. I hope I'm wrong...upon further reads I ended up liking The Tommyknockers.

And it had better have a better resolution than Caleb Carr's atrocity called Killing Time. Now there was a waste of money!

I tore through the first 200 pages the day I picked the book up (Sunday), but this whole
Kurtz thing is like slamming on the brakes. It felt like the momentum he built up with the five kids (including Duddits) came to a screeching halt with this Kurtz fella.

***Minor Spoilers in the Next Paragraph***

I wonder if King watched Apocalypse Now a few times during his recovery. Kurtz? The Stones playing while the gunships swoop in? Surely that's not accidental. Gotta be an homage.

I'm trying to reserve judgement because I'm sure this is going somewhere. By the end I know I won't be disappointed, but I can't help but to wonder where it's all headed. Must...keep...reading.

It works, I still say. I'm no filmmaker but I read this book VERY visually, and there was little that I couldn't see working onscreen. Hell, one of the easiest ways would simply be to establish Jonesy's character as a guy who talks to himself, or at least after the accident. By the time you have him in the room in his head, he's a talkin' fool.

I too think that the book translates quite easily into a movie. I played some scenes out in my head while reading the book with fade ins, fade outs, cross cuts, jitters and all.

I still say it, though...Walken is Kurtz, gold watch up his ass is the key.

I am halfway through the book and did watch the trailer for this and can't help but to see to be dissapointed that Morgan Freeman is playing Kurtz - better yet Colonel Abraham Curtis

THey softened up his name in the movie and it seems like he won't be as tough as nails as he is written but more compassionate...

I think it is pivotal to the plot in the book and I think the translation will fail if his character ends up being a big ole softy...

And it is. That's the reason King named him it.And he was named Kurtz because Apocalypse Now is an adaptation of Conrad's "Heart of Darkness". "Mistah Kurtz, he dead."

Anyway, awesome footage, can't wait for an actual *good* King adaptation (hopefully).
